This song is in another movie that I watched recently...without the vocals. I imagine ti's quite popular, actually. I'm 24 years old and I've had the La Luna cd since I was about 13 years old...absolutely stunning and beautifully haunting.
This song is the italian lyrical translation of the German poem "Der Erlkönig" ("The Alder King") by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe set to the music of Beethoven's 2nd movement of his 7th symphony.
@JayJMarshall Maybe you're thinking about the movie Omen, or The Two Towers? Look at the side bar at different presentations, it may be the one you are thinking of:)
@JayJMarshall The King's Speech; Beethoven's original Symphony No. 7 is played at the end when the King gives his famous speech. They've played it in the trailers and almost anytime they announce the movie.
@JayJMarshall This is a random reply, but a string version of this song was played in the King's Speech, if you saw that. Dunno if it helps, but it's somewhere I heard it. :)
@JayJMarshall You might know it from the movie "Immortal Beloved", it was also used in the movie "The Fall" as well as its trailer (beautiful movie by the way).
@Heyprinny Adapted from a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called Erlkönig (Erlking or elf-king) who abducts or seduces travelers to their deaths (though certain versions of the myth indicate it is the elf-kings daughter who dooms men).
In Goethe's version it is the Erlkönig himself who preys on children.
Well, I did not want to offend anyone, it was just a game joke to say.: Everyone takes their grief with dignity .. without causing suffering to others ...
Certainly did not want to offend anyone .. (do not know)
but sometimes the songs teach us something, Whether written spontaneously or with the heart .. Seems to have already lived in a dream .. (I remember a dream)
which seem to describe the preditory act of an adult against a young boy,...as the boy and his father ride through the forest on their horese the Elf king tries to entice the boy,..the boy alls out top his father "oh father oh father hes trying to hurt me" the father dissmisses his sons plea, and finnally the Elf King gets to the boy and he kills him....not unlike the kind of preditory behavior we see today against children.
Yes there a story behind the song, i translated the lyrics and the meaning is kinda weird.. the father of the kid took him in the night & the king of the Elves touches the kid, and literally the kid get lost, if there is a message in the lyrics please someone let me know :(
If you read European legends you'll find that there are many tales of the elves and fairies stealing away human children to raise them as servants or lovers. If you know that then the song makes sense.;D
Actually, the child is very ill and his father is taking him to a doctor or someone to help him... and as they go through the night, this boy gets so weak, that he kindda starts halucinating. and this Elf king he sees is actually death... and though the Elf king is very kind at the begining and he invites the child to come and play, the boy is scared and he resists... but Elf king uses his powers (the sickness is too strong) and when the song says 'he's already lost', that means he died...
I love Sarah Brightmans music, I went to see Symphony which was absolutly amazing! And yet, this song by far is my favorite of them all. Also, beautiful video. Job well done!

Is there any connection between this admirable song and Schubert's "Der Erlkönig" ?

Since I haven't seen this mentioned, the lyrics are based off of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Der Erlkonig.
