A camera hot shoe is NOT designed to carry the load of a camera and lens. At best there are 3 or 4 small screws holding a hotshoe into the plastic or metal body of the camera. Bad Design!

yes, it looks better however you have mechanical protection of the camera in the first design and now all the wight of the camera/lens is being held by the hot shoe - is this not a weak area of the camera - its heavy with the lens!
