  • anyone who sides with the guards and the feds need to watch the Attica Prison Riot- Disturbing the Universe POV on PBS video over on the suggested videos on the side there ----->. At the end you can see the troopers celebrating and yelling "white power" after the massacre. I am white and those ignorant bastards had no business with a weapon. They killed them like fish in a barrel.

  • My grandfather was a state trooper at the time and filmed most of the riot. He just gave me a couple hours' worth of footage that I'm thinking of uploading if I can get his permission.

  • ATTICA.. ATTICA.. ATTICA!!!!

  • The people who take the side of the guards and/or justify the guards for murdering other guards—were basically raised and weaned on the American news media: That would qualify them as politically retarded in most places of the literate world.

  • alex your a retard several guards were shot by the troopers. the gaurds didnt shoot anyone. the troopers just opened fire on anyone.

  • it's the fucking bankers, the politicians There the bad guys.

  • R.I.P. The 43

  • ATTICA! ATTICA!

  • this was the day i was born.

  • what about the towns civillions i live in attica! and there is close to 6000 inmates now, its also a maximum security prison killers and rapists.

  • I might have to disagree that these rapists and murderers are all heroes.

  • @robotpanda77 They're heroes to all the other rapists and murderers, con artists and sociopaths, and innocents alike that gotta spend time within the system.

  • Wow what a retarded governor, OK what was the point of the assault from the national guard, OBVIOUSLY NOT TO SAVE THE HOSTAGES.

  • why didnt they all just escape

  • well when you take animals like those inmates who have rap sheets 4 ft long and and take hostages and put knives to their throats and threaten to kill them. do they really think they're going to be pampered in prison? they're societies scum and outright predators, by the time they land in State Prison they've had how many chances to turn their lives around. but NO they want everything handed to them for free! once they're locked up they become poor little victims. cry to someone else.

  • ur an idiot.

  • Hawkeye?!?!?! foo u livin in seattle?!?!?! i think i know who u are.

  • nys prison's are fairly cushy. as far as programs and how your treated. didnt do any max time besides reception but did a year in gowanda witch is pretty much a max without the wall. because of those lives lost i had it better

  • The previous post, from myself, has nothing to do with skinny men and/or fat women comments made previously.......What the hell do "they" (skinny men and fat women) have to do with prison conditions in Attica over 30 years ago?

  • What is just. Sentences are much, much longer for those who are unable to afford a lawyer. The US has more incarcerated people than any other country... 2.5 mil. Did you know that there are more black men in prison than in college in the US. There is something and someone behind every statistic. The Attica riot should remind us all that we are all human; we all make mistakes; and we all prisoners and those who care for them; deserve to be treated as such.

  • Small skinny men can abuse big fat women. Once they get to jail many criminals develop an attitude of being a victim, and since they are generally excellent manipulators, can fool people into believing them. I work at the opposite end of the justice system from yourself - the transformation from violent offender to cowering victim is dramatic. You have to have a long history of offending to actually get a prison term, at least in my country. The American 3 strikes rule Im sure is the same.

  • I don't know where people get the idea prison {or even jail} "isn't that bad." It is horrible. First of all you lose your freedom. Second, there is no privacy. No sense of dignity. It is loud. People are shouting. Cells are clanking. The food is like eating cardboard {day after day after day.} Lights are on all the time . Your sleep is constantly being disrupted. I could go on and on. You treat people like animals and you get animals. How could Rockefeller order those people shot? Terrible.

  • Lose your freedom? Freedom is a right. In order to lose that right you must first violate the rights of others.

  • I dont think you understand, they were not fighting for their release, they were fighting for the opportunity to better themselves while in custody. This incident has made it possible for prisoners to get educations, among other opportunities, while in the system and contribute to our society once their fair sentence has been served.

  • Prison is entirely voluntary. You only go if you commit crime.

  • No it is not. In Michigan I believe they found at least fifteen people in jail for murder of rape who didn't commit the crime. Unfortunately what you say isn't true...........and you sound like you're bright enough to know better. Are 90% of the people in prison because they committed a crime. Probably. Everybody? Not even close.

  • Ever here of DNA? Anybody ever get exonerated via DNA?

  • I'd be suspicious of that sort of statistic. If additional evidence comes to light and a conviction is quashed for whatever reason, that doesn't necessarily mean that individual didnt commit the crime, it just means the prosecution was found wanting.

  • Innocent people are put in jail all the time. I used to work with prisons and jails as a substance abuse counselor and also as a person who evaluated inmates in order to assess if they had a genuine mental disorder or to evaluate whether a prisoner should go to jail or to a psychiatric facility {and I'm not a "bleeding heart"} You see guys in jail who are 5'4" 120 lbs who are in there for "spousal abuse" when their wife is 5'10" 190lbs and drives a truck on the wifes "word."

  • I can't believe how many people are taking the sides of the guards. The prisoners were serving a prison sentence and them all being shot at is clearly unjust. The government would have sentenced them to death if they though they deserved it. They didn't deserve it so they were put in prison but some got the death sentence anyway because of some trigger happy guards. It surprises me that people think that criminals are any less of a person because of the crimes they committed. It's scary really.

  • Jsut because you lose your freedom from committing a crime, DOES NOT MEAN YOU LOSE YOUR HUMANITY!! Prisoners are still people, and they deserve human rights too! Plus, it is 1971: a very racist America could've incarcerated many innocent minorities in botched trials and fabricated police reports! How would you like to make a mistake, be convicted to 10 years, but you see your health worsen because you have no food or clean clothes? Those 10 years @ Attica turns into a life sentence! Think!!

  • What is nauseating is that these scum, these CRIMINALS, who had absolutley no reguard for the humans that they violated and murdered and raped. were made millionaires by a liberal laywer. What did the families of the gaurds recieve? A flag that was on there coffin! I grew up with the kids who were left fatherless, I saw the families forgotten by the DOC. everyone was all wet eyed about the scum that was incarcerated ...no one gave a crap about the Gaurds, or there families

  • all you people bitchin' about inmates try to look at this from their side. at that time, they were treated like animals. one shover a week, one roll of toilet paper a month. prison guards were all white, but 2/3 of inmates were other races. you know how officers called their batons? a "nigger stick" ... it is called correctional facility, so tell me what corrections could be made with those conditions? how can you correct someone who is deprived of his basic human rights?

  • See man it's already bad enough that these people did some terrible shit to get in there. But I know all too well that if you keep someone in a cage doing a LIFE sentence then shit don't matter to them and they will kill ANOYBODY for ANYTHING just because they feel like it. So I'm sitting here like"Oh my god these guys don't care wether they die or not so SHOOT THEM if they try some STUPID DANGEROUS SHIT!!

  • okay everbody im from attica. all the prisoners in attica deserve to be there. none of them did anything simple. does MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON mean anything?

  • i'm italian.I whatch "the prison" film on italian tv. it'is very fonderfull.

    Alessandro

  • Attica is a Maximum "a" facility people are not in there for being good sumaritans, these are the scum of the earth. Before you go cheering for these convicted felons ask yourself one question... do you want these individuals in your house near your family... I didnt think so. so stop worrying about them and let us do our job.

  • fuck the prisoners, if they didnt wanna b in prison dont do the fkin crime. pretty simple! should have killed all the fkin prisoners cos its there fault the gaurds died, y should we make prisons a nicer place to be, should b a hole in the floor with a corner to shit in and get fed mouldy food the fuckers!!!

  • They were in prison for a reason. As soon as they broke the law, they forfeited their rights. How did they think it would turn out? If the government had met their demands, then prisons all across the country would be a joke. What the state troopers did was perfectly justifiable. It's very unfortunate that hostages died, but the prisoners completely crossed the line.

  • I'm sorry that you not better informed about the purpose of such a riot/rebellion, what sparked it and how unnecessarily violent state response was. Of course inmates knew they would be met with force but when you are civilly (politically) dead you have nothing to lose, right? What they did brought visibility to prison violence across the nation. It is the law that is corrupt, not those who break such laws to survive. over 70% of incarcerated peoples are in for non-violent crimes. go read!

  • Just because they did something wrong doesn't mean the prison should sink to the inmates' level. I mean it's not Guantanamo(people are treated poorly there too) It's basic human rights and it's not like all of them kill people.

  • Gandhi, Dr. King, Jesus all showed that Civil disobedience in pursuit of justice and equality is never wrong. You should see the humiliation they put the black men through after the uprising. If someone hated you because of the color of your skin and treated you like a dog for your entire life, you would rebel too.

  • Dr. King... uh, nope, I don't remember him complaining about the jail conditions. He went to jail and did his time, knowing what he was doing was for a better world. Ghandi, Dr. King, Jesus showed disobedience for a greater cause. You tell me, is showing disobedience for a better jail an overall greater cause? I think not.

  • He sure did. He also stressed extreme non-violence. And that you should not harbor hate or anger towards your opponents. As far as I know, taking hostages is not exactly a "non-violence."

  • You should all watch the PBS documentary Eyes on the Prize. It features a segment which more appropriately explains the actual circumtances surrounding the uprising and the immediate aftermath. These prisoners were treated horribly, oppressed under a national system that was designed to destroy from birth not because of what they had done but because of who they were. The govt hated black ppl, considered "the black oanther party the largest threat to internal security." - President Hoover

  • Thank You for posting this. This is a true and truly sad tale in American History. Prisoners are people-deserving of human rights and dignity. Police are people equal to fault and temptation, with the world's hardest and most scrutinized job, even so they are governed by orders. In the end, there are no real heroes, just people, men, making tragic history. God Bless them all.

  • the conditions in prisons in the US are still far below basic human rights standards. It's a joke that this film suggests that there have been drastic improvements. Prisons are STILL modern day slave plantations, for blacks, browns, and whites. Slavery is still legal if you've been convicted of a crime, and since almost everything has become criminal, the entire system is a total failure

  • the hostages were going to get their demands up until the guard died in the hospital. then all the rioters could possibly be charged with murder .and the goverment could not be seen as giving into the demands of murderers.

  • Inability of criminals to think and see any other way to solve their problems but violence has caused the death of those 43 people. Nothing else. If the inmates would not have taken over, none would have died. Done, that's all..

  • so people should just put up with injustice and abuse? would you?

  • Read again. I did not say any of this. I said, the deaths were a direct result of the inmate's actions. Nothing else.

  • deutsch2k5

Amazingly, you honestly think you have the coping strategies to put up with what those people did? It's only shocking that the tinder boxes that are prisons don't blow up more regularly. And while you probably love to think that it's not your problem and that they all get what they deserve, remember that the hate and resentment they build up inside won't stay there - the majority of prisoners are going to walk your streets again - angry and unfulfilled. Viele gluck!!

  • I know EXACTLY what is goin on inside prisons. I am a corrections officer. I am not saying that any injustice, abuse should have been taken quietly, WHAT I am saying is the deaths are caused by the inmate's actions. I read somewhere that it was to blame on the police etc. but if ya trace back all the actions causing the death? Started with the inmates taking over the prison. Not all deaths were caused by law-enforcement either.

  • but WHY did they riot is what you're forgetting..

  • Is it really me? Does what i wrote or write really confuse so much? One more time for the slow...I said the deaths of those 43 would NOT have happened IF the inmates would NOT have taken over the prison! These deaths are the resulst of these inmates NOT THINK things out. The deaths are to blame on those rioting inmates...all I said and say. I say nothing about the inmates should not do anything. But violence breeds violence. HELLO? Please understand what you read!

  • as u r a corrections officer, so u say, there IS no other way. the authorities have a total disregard for human rights, happens every minute of every day. what do u expect? u people are villified, hated, have no social standing or social life outside your screw community. as u well know, u get fucked up if recognized. even society AND the bible hate u for what u r. 'evil is he that holds the key to another mans freedom'. fuck u and fuck ur kind.

  • I take it you are a convict? This is the thinking of a convict. BTW,your bible crap? useless. U have not understood the bible at all, bro.People don't like corrections Officers?U maybe not. Probably because you don't understand society and the law and see anyone restricting you from your illegal life-style as evil. You are a criminal mind.Remember, and this is another myth, dont drop your soap..unless u like it.

  • you aint a very gd corrections officer...don't drop the soap..what kind of dumb shit is that 2 comment about...set an example maine

  • ATTICA!

    ATTICA!

    ATTICA!

  • say hello to my lit..... wrong movie

  • Fascinating footage. State of prisons haven't gotten much better today but of course in 1971 it was mixed with an incredible amount of racism by the prison authorities and the US government itself. In fact, it's doubtful that America under Nixon was a democracy at all so this overkill was totally routine at the time.

  • If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

  • you cant keep the small man down

  • Prisoners turned martyrs for the cause-

    More of Rockefellers legacy-

    good footage*

  • happy anniversary

  • oh no the poor prisoners got treated badly! Dont break the law!

  • serious shit!!!

  • yeah. i can see the prison right from my house. this is actually a pretty safe place to live because if they want to get out they will go far away. not anywhere in the town.

  • me too! - on the way 2 skool

  • @sunniebif1132 I live like 20 minutes away. I have a teacher that once found an escaped prisoner in her garbage can years and years ago!
