@IllegalMavamaarten You can install it with the alternate, however partitioning will be harder. I would recommend that you torrent the regular and use WUBI to install it.
I was trying to put linux on my USB stick, using some USB installer from pendrivelinux. It worked, but I couldn't save any preferences... Now I opened up my old PC, removed the HDD (so it won't install on the HDD), plugged in my USB stick, booted from a live CD, and it started installing (I told it to create a bootloader on the USB) ! Now installing, I really hope it works :P
I have a dell with XP installed on it. I want to dual boot install ubuntu on it. I'm worried if the software drivers will be compatible (sound, video, etc.) Anyone know?
@fdemey I installed every thing seems to be working fine (driver wise). ALTHOUGH, if you're video card is an ATI, you might experience issues. Screen freezing, not loading up, etc. Happened to me.

Erm, if you format your harddrive and use ubuntu as your primary OS then say goodbye to vista, if you put it in virtual box then it just runs in its own window as a windows program. If you want ubu running on ur pc as an OS like vista you can partition the HDD but u sound like a noob so i wouldnt suggest it ;)
@thethewiLLbuR YES you need antivirus for Linux, though Linux-users swear Linux NEVER gets viruses or spyware because it's "more stable" than Windows. You really do need it, regardless of OS.
I currently have Vista, but when I try to log on to any of my accounts (including the administrator) I get the message "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." Safe mode doesn't work. System Restore doesn't work. I want to try Ubuntu. Is there a way to install it without logging on to a profile? If not, I'm screwed.
Yes, there is a way. You will need to use someone else's computer to download Ubuntu, and burn it to the disc using that computer. Place the disk in your drive, restart, and make sure that the CD Drive is the first boot priority. This is default on most computers, so don't worry. Then just install... You can even get rid of Vista completely if you want to. This is a little advanced, so you might want to do your homework and get a little help. Hope I helped.
I currently have Vista but I now get an error message when I try to log on saying that my user profile couldn't be loaded or found or something. I tried System Restore but it failed. I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux. I don't want to pay for a new copy of Windows right now. Would downloading and using the new version of Ubuntu be practical for me in my situation? Would it be very difficult for me to get used to after using pretty much only Windows Operating Systems?
@matthewgsteel Well... do you have the back-up/Install discs for Vista? You may need to format the whole harddrive... I'm afraid I'm not terribly familiar with the picky Vista, though Windows 7 works a lot like it...
Can you show me a way to install this without using the whole hard drive? I have it installed right now and I have no other os. I have an 80gb hard drive and I really want to be able to take advantage of the space, thank you =]
when i try to install linux it tells me to install boot helper, so i do and an error comes up right at the end... can you please help me or tell me a way i can just boot from the CD in Bios?
so i have this old computer i am restoring, and i want to put xp on it, but i can boot from an xp disk it says somithing about protecting the computer, so i went to install this boot up and then install xp but it wont read my hard drves when it comes to the partition manager any help?
@Dreambro1 Hey dude, I booted it on a wiped HD today. You'll need access to another computer/burner. But you go to ubuntu(dot)com, and DL the file. Then follow the instructions on ubuntu website to burn the disk properly so it opens as an image file( I used a Mac, to burn ubuntu for my PC, worked great). Then simply put the CD in, and reboot/boot from CD..then relax and follow the easy instructions. PS, find your Computer screen CD(driver), cause youll want to have nice resolution. good luck!
i have a question. When i do the install without any changes can i download any software or change the graphics while im in the test ubuntu, cuz i cant. Is this normal or does it mean that it wont run properly and can i boot back to windows when i install it?
Someone help me please! I did the 6 steps and then I hit install, after it zoomed to 15% and then an error came up "Input/Output error during write on /dev/sda" and theres the option of cancel, ignore, and retry and whichever one i choose, it goes back to 0% and then to 5% and then it just sits there :(
oh there have been some problems with the connection to the internet for some. linux is getting better. it's only recently been accepted by the mainstream so all that really needs to be done is someone release a very good super stable release that can automatically configure drivers and not leave that burden on the end user.
they have a golden opportunity right now with the failure of vista many people are disgruntled with windows and are refusing to upgrade from xp to 7 and instead are using mac and even trying linux.
You can't compare those operating systems in that way. Windows is for gamers, Ubuntu is more free and is way faster and I use Ubuntu on my laptop so I quickly can take notes and surf the internet and watch movies, and then use my desktop PC for gaming which runs XP (: Linux is faster and safer than XP and therefore I'd prefer that if it was easier to play on it (: You just have to learn the basics of the UNIX, then Ubuntu is pretty easy (:
go to ubuntuforums(dot)com and searc for a solution to your ati problem.
wine only supports a few windows programs so i would recommend doing a dual boot install of ubuntu and windows that way you have the ability to run any windows app you need and when you want to play around with ubuntu you can do that to.
1st of all, ATI doesn't keep it's Linux drivers up to date. So don't count on any native Linux support for an ATI card outside of unofficial or old drivers.
Any particular reason why you downloaded this file as a torrent? That's just asking to waste your time. Essentially you can download Ubuntu _free_ from their official website, with a pretty decent download speed.
Well, because if you've got a high download speed, the Ubuntu servers won't have enough upload speed to give you the full download speed. Torrents, however, do give you that ability.
And besides, it feels good seeding Ubuntu, knowing that you can spread the word without saying anything :)
Going by the post date, this video was released *on the day of* the final release of Ubuntu 9.10. If you chose to NOT download via torrent, you'd be making a mistake. Ubuntu's servers are notorious for crashing on release days, and torrents are the perfect invention to counter-act this. On download days there are hundreds of users seeding the download and you get great speeds.
yeah i know but ive never been able to configure it, im not new but i could never do the xconfigure thing w.e my grapics card is nvidia geforce 6150 le , i dont know how, if u could help me that would be great, i love ubuntu
Just curious, How much RAM do you allocate for the VHD, I just started using virtualbox. I got 3 gigs of RAM running win7 64bit, whats a good amount to give the guest OS?
Ok thanks, also quick question. On ubuntu 9.10 have you had problems with the Guest Additions? After awhile I finally got them to install but still couldn't change resolution and started running really slow? Is Vbox's GA not up to date for 9.10?
Ubuntu 9.10 disabled my soundcard output on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it's a Ubuntu bug or a motherbord bug. I'm just hoping that the next April 2010 release does not screw up a lot more devices.
@rhillner See, this is the reason I will NEVER use a Linux-based machine. Assholes like you pick on Windows users, and I DON'T deal with elitist shitheads that pick on others because of their freaking OPERATING SYSTEM.
Linux users that can't be nice aren't worth my time, and frankly, most of the Linux users I''ve met *aren't nice*.
Save yourselves the time, guys - use Mac OSX before a Linux machine. Do you *really* want to associate with people who slam other because of what OS they use?
no offense dude, but why would you install ubuntu linux on a virtual machine? it's pointless as technically you're still running windows. linux is there as a windows Alternative. If you wanted to try it out I would've suggested a dual-boot
when i tried to install it through an upgrade when finished and on first boot it would just freeze when Compiz Fusion thing popped up. i then reinstalled 9.04 and upgraded without that and it was not compiz fault. then i downloaded it and burn it to a disk and when i get to the partition creator nothing comes up :/ the 64Bit version brings up the partiition menu but not the 32 and this is a 32Bit PC :( I got windows 7 RC on it now >.>
mine did. I have a gateway mx7118 and it uses broadcom and it worked. worst that might happen is you need an ethernet to hook up and download a driver.
@Windows446 I'm sorry. Don't get it just yet. I updated and it worked fine. I fresh installed and had to take 2 Tylenol for the headache I got after 4 hours of internet digging. I have it back up and running so if you ever need a guide for BCM4318's driver let me know. I found one floating around that worked.
THIS IS THE WORSEST FUCKING LAPTOP/SOFTWARE/BRAND EVER!!! FUCK THAT SHIT!

go to ubuntuforums(dot)com and searc for a solution to your ati problem.
wine only supports a few windows programs so i would recommend doing a dual boot install of ubuntu and windows that way you have the ability to run any windows app you need and when you want to play around with ubuntu you can do that to.

@camboy1132
1st of all, ATI doesn't keep it's Linux drivers up to date. So don't count on any native Linux support for an ATI card outside of unofficial or old drivers.

is there a way to use netflix under ubuntu ?

Why would you torrent something free?
lambofgodpunk 2 years ago
Because it's faster. I get 800kbps on regular downloads, but when I torrent stuff I get about 1.5mbps.
JakkHack 2 years ago
thanks.
software logos all look like a "biohazard" warning to me.
benjie414 2 years ago
Any particular reason why you downloaded this file as a torrent? That's just asking to waste your time. Essentially you can download Ubuntu _free_ from their official website, with a pretty decent download speed.
jdudeJmusicAforlifeC 2 years ago
Well, because if you've got a high download speed, the Ubuntu servers won't have enough upload speed to give you the full download speed. Torrents, however, do give you that ability.
And besides, it feels good seeding Ubuntu, knowing that you can spread the word without saying anything :)
Jarige2 2 years ago
You've made an excellent point clarifying. :p
jdudeJmusicAforlifeC 2 years ago
Thank you :D
Torrents are great, legally and illigally :)
Jarige2 2 years ago
Going by the post date, this video was released *on the day of* the final release of Ubuntu 9.10. If you chose to NOT download via torrent, you'd be making a mistake. Ubuntu's servers are notorious for crashing on release days, and torrents are the perfect invention to counter-act this. On download days there are hundreds of users seeding the download and you get great speeds.

svircheto 2 years ago
Does this version of ubuntu have 1440x900 resolution ?
KingGansta91 2 years ago
Depends if your graphics card is supported, which it should be.
rogueamp 2 years ago

thanx
KingGansta91 2 years ago
Looks like NVIDIA isn't supported, but you could search for "nvidia 6150 driver ubuntu" in Google.
rogueamp 2 years ago
Wait.. Would you need XP, then install Ubuntu?
Or, can you install it without XP?
gshnoozer2 2 years ago
you could order the free cd that would come in 6 weeks and then install it without windows by putting the cd in before you turn on the computer

Vbox can be used for a bunch of other OSs too. Vbox also has more options for Virtual Devices
tymaster42082 2 years ago
Just curious, How much RAM do you allocate for the VHD, I just started using virtualbox. I got 3 gigs of RAM running win7 64bit, whats a good amount to give the guest OS?
tymaster42082 2 years ago
around 1GB/750MB
Cozmo195studios 2 years ago
Ok thanks, also quick question. On ubuntu 9.10 have you had problems with the Guest Additions? After awhile I finally got them to install but still couldn't change resolution and started running really slow? Is Vbox's GA not up to date for 9.10?
tymaster42082 2 years ago
Ubuntu 9.10 disabled my soundcard output on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it's a Ubuntu bug or a motherbord bug. I'm just hoping that the next April 2010 release does not screw up a lot more devices.

linux is complicated !
i am not a pro to understand it and its rubbish!
windows is simply & useful
i can download any softwares with cracked versions & shared serial numbers of them
windows fast & great with directx
daicanhaque 2 years ago
Just because you are incapable of understanding it does not make it rubbish, thank you very much. ;)
I'd rather that dumb people stick with Windows anyway.
rhillner 2 years ago
@rhillner See, this is the reason I will NEVER use a Linux-based machine. Assholes like you pick on Windows users, and I DON'T deal with elitist shitheads that pick on others because of their freaking OPERATING SYSTEM.
Linux users that can't be nice aren't worth my time, and frankly, most of the Linux users I''ve met *aren't nice*.
Save yourselves the time, guys - use Mac OSX before a Linux machine. Do you *really* want to associate with people who slam other because of what OS they use?
ThePhantomSafetyPin 1 year ago
no offense dude, but why would you install ubuntu linux on a virtual machine? it's pointless as technically you're still running windows. linux is there as a windows Alternative. If you wanted to try it out I would've suggested a dual-boot
sickspastic 2 years ago 2
Because installing it in a vm is easier than duel booting if you just want to test it...
rhillner 2 years ago
when i tried to install it through an upgrade when finished and on first boot it would just freeze when Compiz Fusion thing popped up. i then reinstalled 9.04 and upgraded without that and it was not compiz fault. then i downloaded it and burn it to a disk and when i get to the partition creator nothing comes up :/ the 64Bit version brings up the partiition menu but not the 32 and this is a 32Bit PC :( I got windows 7 RC on it now >.>

Its to buggy, no sound drivers and its slow
carbonunit 2 years ago
i upgraded to it, and i have no problems with sound, and it's not slow in the slightest. maybe it's something with your hardware configuration? :\
sickspastic 2 years ago
I know, I have sound problems with all linux OSs EXCEPT for Ubuntu.

Does it work with Broadcom Wireless?

i think so check the forums to be sure
sacredgeometry 2 years ago
it does!
BobR672 2 years ago
mine did. I have a gateway mx7118 and it uses broadcom and it worked. worst that might happen is you need an ethernet to hook up and download a driver.
st3w132cki3l 2 years ago
Problem is I CANT USE ETHERNET because the router is in a different room.
Windows446 2 years ago
@Windows446 I'm sorry. Don't get it just yet. I updated and it worked fine. I fresh installed and had to take 2 Tylenol for the headache I got after 4 hours of internet digging. I have it back up and running so if you ever need a guide for BCM4318's driver let me know. I found one floating around that worked.

can you play games on ubuntu (like GTA IV or Half-Life 2) just like on Windows XP?
SmileysAreForN00bs 2 years ago
Yes you can.You need to get Wine for Linux,
winehq()com
Replace () with .
xan1242 2 years ago
ok so that means no
SmileysAreForN00bs 2 years ago
No it doesnt. You actually can run.Look on other videos here. They can play GTA SA on linux.
xan1242 2 years ago
if you have Wine then I think so
starsiegeRoks 2 years ago
@SmileysAreForN00bs You have to get the Linux version of the game, because if you want to run Windows games you need WINE.
Seriously? If you want to game, use Windows, not Ubuntu. It's just not a gaming OS.
