At one point I became so tired I parked off next to a corn field. A few hours into my slumber I was awoken by police. Apparently, I was camped outside a NASA facility. However, after hearing that I stopped merely from exhaustion, the cop commended me and gave me directions to the nearest Walmart parking lot.
@norevelation that was one great cop to do that for you, many people underestimate travel and how exhausting it can be, I was in similar situation driving back from Sydney in December it was literally exhausting and I was stopping every hour or so. just to get some rest before travelling further, that was a long 17oo km
@mumandtwins Exactly. Driving while fatigued is a huge risk. One reason I won't take any chances is that I tried once a few years back when I was eighteen. I was driving all day, quite exhausted, but decided to try going as far as I could. To put it simply, I nodded off for a few seconds. I had no idea I was that exhausted. My eyes literally just closed without my consent. It all happened so fast, but I managed to regain control before anything serious. I took that as an epiphany.
@mumandtwins Knowing that not everyone is so lucky for a close call therefore not taking that chance again is tragic. I wouldn't say we need a close call to allow us to make that proper decision, but I know my friend would've loved for his sister to have been there when his daughter was born... and there's no reason I deserved a second chance any more than her.
This is upsetting. My cousin died in an accident when she was 16, so did her 15 yr old friend. My good friend lost his mom in a head on collision a few years back, and then his 16 yr old sister just a year later; head on with a tractor trailer. Driving tired is not a joke. When I drove out to Washington state from New York, I would stop at any sign of fatigue, rest stop or not. On another note, causing an accident with deaths involved, what if you survive? Extreme shock could last a lifetime.
Let me just say I am sorry for our loss. It's not often I get emotional on U Tube ,but this really did get to me and I find myself wanting to cry - which again is a first for me. Regards of what people say to you it will never be enough to rid you of the pain you are and always will be going through. I would have thought you may try to talk to your son's girlfriend - it might make it just a bit more bearable. I know that sounds stupid but why not what has one to loose!. My heart is with you.
@MegaSmallPeople I spent a full day with her on 18 November 2007 and got the story directly from her perspective, about what went on in the days leading up to the crash, and even the day he passed away and the trip however events happened that has now caused a break in communicaiton between my family and herself. it is a very long story, She will always be a last link, to my son, but she does have her own life to lead now I wish her well. with her new man and her son
my gf was killed by a drunk driver, the guy hit the passenger door of my car doing 80+ mph and killed her on impact, i was on a crossover in the median turning in to her driveway when he swerved and hit my car. it took me a year and alot of counseling to get over that but i'm slowly starting to move on.
nice to know the gf is going on with her life :) one person you forgot though, the driver of the bus (unless i missed something?) eventhough he wasn't at fault (don't know this fact but since you mention the kids fatigue i guess the bus was driving on its own lane?) he also has to live with it. sorry for typo's :)
@bruyndoncx yes that is true, see it forms part of the ripple effect Road Crash has on the community as a whole. Dion paid with his life, his GF will forever have the memory of that night, and the driver of the bus, well his skills kept the bus upright avoiding more injuries. The bus was in his own lane. then there is the affect on the ambos, firies, and police and SES who attended the scene as well as his family
It's sad that it ended this way. The people that should die are the ones in persecutions and races: imbeciles. I'm at the road a lot. I have witnessed many accidents caused by weather, falling asleep, and curvy roads. I personally don't drive. I always prefer to walk, I have been in too many accidents to be able to hit the gas without panic. I let that to experienced drivers. And Mexico is ten times worse than US... I love bikes. If I ever got one I'd only use it in a deserted grass field...
wow, not often i wanna cry after watching stuff, i used to drive for a living, always thought a few cans of red bull would keep me going, till one day it didn't.
Ah, yes. I was 18 when my boyfriend got accepted to UC Berkeley. I still had a curfew and had to be home at night by 12a on the dot. I drove from LA to Berkeley and back in one day and made it back home 2 minutes before 12. The things that love do to you, but it was the most romantic thing I have ever done. Not to mention how fast I was going in my VW Jetta 90-110. We are going on our 7th anniversary :).
not being mean but thats why cars should have log book times like us truck drivers because its abit un fair but its life sad story that this pore kid had to die young and magen how his old man fills preashering his son to drive have some respect for the dion as he was only trying to do the right thing R.I.P
It's one thing to drive all day long, but it's another if you've only driven for 2 weeks. I can drive up to 18 hours solo if I need to, but I've been driving for 7 years. I also have over 10,000 cross country miles under my belt.
mumandtwins....i like how u r trying to save other peoples lives by providing facts about driving and using ur own son as an example.....when i get my license i will never drive tired...EVER...and by the way, at 2:05 and 2:10....those things that look like a shirt and a body on the the remains of the cars hood.....is that dion?
if your trying to show a point and show respect at the same time you should have used a different song. my god i wouldnt want to be remember to that song. it almost sounds like a joke to put that there.
The is from his mothers point of view, She has gone through a huge tragedy... and you idiotic teenagers will never understand the pain that she has felt.. so just back off... There is a old saying..
If you cannot saying anything good, then don't say anything at all..
DAMN. No offense but that's stupid. I would NEVER let my kid who's only been licensed for 2 weeks drive all day long. That's just asking for trouble. I mean why would you let your kid drive that much with as little experience as that kid had? Oh well.
In my opinion "love hurts" would've been a better choice for a background song.
ditto, my point exactly and his father has to live with that for the rest of his life. I had no idea he had gone out of town in his fathers car, his father lives his life with his head in the sand about a lot of things that is one reason why I split from him after 20 yrs of marriage.
My apologizes and condolences. I too have been in situations like that and my parents were very protective so that is why I made the comment about the not allowing an all day trip with such little experience. Hopefully your ex can learn from this and MAYBE teach others from his poor parental choices. Once again, my condolences to you.
accepted, one thing I have learned in this life and as a parent, is there MUST be consistancy between parenting styles. it is our job to guide our children, their lives depend on parents working together, but I also learned that one strong parent is better than 2 weak ones.
that is so sad. it makes me wannacry:// i dont even wanna say that there is any of the parents fault in it couse they feel already freakin bad as anybody ca ;? rip that guy that poor guy :/
What a sad story. Mother of Dion, I am soooo sorry for your loss. I recall the throws of love and how I would do anything, feeling invincible with my love I could do anything. How humbling to hear what has happened. I have driven many miles and felt exhausted yet gone on.....when necessary. I have learned from you. I am soooo sorry, thank you
RIP it truly is fatal and this is evidence.
