Ronnie Earl is a One of a Kind Killer Blues Man along with his incredible Blues Band doing this one at an EXTREME HIGH Level of BLUES PERFECTION that would be untouchable by most...
I've seen Albert Collins, Stevie Ray, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, John Lee Hooker, BB, ...but I must say, Ronnie Earl has a unique attacking style that raises the hair on my neck...
I have loved this man's work for many years. I never saw him. Good show. He just never got around often or very much in Texas. I don't get around much outside of Texas...
Hey JuliasBlues, Ronnie Earl is a friend of mine and one of the nicest and most gracious people I have ever met. He is perhaps the most brilliant blues player in America at this time. I have seen some shows of his that are just jaw dropping. He is semi-retired now only playing around the New England area these days. If you are ever in the area his shows are spectacular.
Utterly agreed about Ronnie's greatness. Anybody who ever drags out the old elitist argument about The Blues being a limited form should lend an ear to Ronnie Earl.
He's really stretched the boundaries without ever sounding like he's trying too hard or building contrivances.
Guys like Clapton and BB King (even Jeff Beck) must marvel and envy the guy. He's positively inspiring. I'm mostly a keyboardist, but I grab the guitar whenever I hear him. Always something to learn from RE!
Ronnie always gets disappointed when I tell him that I think he is one of the Blues Greats. He is just so humble and doesn't look at his ability the way the general public does. He believes all musicians have something great to offer the art form which is another reason to give him the utmost respect. There is just no way I can listen to his music and not fawn over it. His music touches my soul which is all you can ask out of a musician.
NDMIKE-Ronnie has not received anywhere near the exposure/acclaim due him. While I have been a lifelong bluesfan and guitar player, it wasn't until the last 10 years that I stumbled upon his work .Once I heard him, I was hooked. For my money, he clearly is one of the all time blues greats. I was not aware that he was semi-retired. Where in NE does he play? I need to make a pilgrimmage soon. Thank you for your personal insight on his humility to go with his artistry.
Ronnie plays in and around Boston and in the Maine area. He still plays fairly frequently. I made a pilgrimmage to see him play which is how we became friends. It was an amazing time for me. I traveled from Austin, Texas to see him play and my wife happened to tell this to the bass player between sets. We ended up spending the weekend hanging with Ronnie and have since become friends. Ronnie is a very spiritual and beautiful soul which shows up in his music.
Ronnie has semi-retired for two main reasons, he battles type 1 diabetes and he just burned out on the travel. He put out Hope Radio without having a tour. That is why he put out the Hope Radio DVD so that music fans can see him play live. The diabetes is a fierce and awful disease that has just sapped his will to travel so he semi-retired. He still plays with as much passion and heart as any blues player around. He just doesn't tour any longer.
I got to know Ronnie very well in the late 80's and early 90's he was one of the kindest people you would ever come across. There were many nights that I would go see him and during a tune he would walk out in the crowd and just hand me the guitar and say now you go play, I know I was not the only one he would do this with but how many other world class players would do that today? He has not gotten the acclaim he deserves
It great to hear others talk about their experiences visiting with Ronnie Earl. It must have been amazing to have him hand you his guitar. Ronnie has always told me that every musician has something to offer the art form and he obviously believed in your musical gifts. Great story, thank you for sharing!
What an amazing sound. I've got a Fender Strat Avri '62 with texas specials and a Fender Super Reverb amp from '66, but impossible to get this special sound!
You could get closer to his tone with CS69's or 57/62 Fender pickups. The Texas Specials are overwound and not as detailed. They do sound great in their own way, though.
ronnie's sense of time and dynamics are phenomenal-- all his tone is in his fingers. the funny thing is that he is such an agressive player but he is a really quiet, humble guy.
A quick comment for the idiots that make comments about this like "vaughanesque" and other such rubbish:
The history of electric blues guitar did NOT begin with SRV, okay?
Ronnie has been around with his own sound and style for a long long time and if there's any justice in the world, he will continue to do so for a long long time yet.
theres so much more to it than that. he delves into a rollercoaster of dynamics that keeps the subconscious ear perked up and makes you enjoy the music as a whole.
And if you're going to speak of a narrow minded player, dont speak of ronnie earl, check out his jazz stuff. speak of albert king or someone of that era. but again, wildly entertaining because of the showmanship, not just the guitar playing.
No, but going back and reading it I can see how it would come across as such. I was stating that Albert King wasn't the most technical guitarist (narrow minded may not have been the best choice of words) but he was so amazingly entertaining because of his showmanship, not just the pure emotion he puts forth through his guitar playing, much like Ronnie Earl.
Albert King is one of my favorites, please do not think I'm talking bad about him.
Love both SRV and Ronnie Earl, but just to clarify, they were around the same age and both came up around the same time. SRV just made it into the mainstream.
I had a chance to play w him in 96 at the Fort Lauderdale blues festival. He is playing my gold strat on his website-he is a nice person and plays blues with the same depth as a Muddy Waters.
funny i see alot of ronnie earl in SRV's playing, the aggressive tone and style ,i think altho i've never heard, but i think SRV took alot from ronnie earl
He is the ultimate plug in and play guitarist. You could blind fold him and every note right for every place could be heard, Now this is a man connected to his instrument, Woody 1955 saw Buddy on a comparison. I saw Buddy and in my opinion he scatters notes whilst Ronnie places them just right.
Theres something about Ronnie Earl that makes me shudder; i keep coming back to these videos im falling in love with him, his style his flare, all of it just makes me tingle. great great man.
say blues; say Ronnie Earl :-)He makes his strat whisper & moan. And a genuine showman he is! We once played a festival in Belgium on the same day; our -local- band in the afternoon, Ronnie Earl and his outfit later that same night. Our guitarplayer -completely pissed- dumped his strat after seeing Ronnie play, and was found desperate in a ditch. lol !
He had just seen the Messiahahahaha !!
For me my buddy is still the best, but no doubt about mr. Earl's qualities. He is Mr. 6-string in person.
Ronnie's hand is on fire. his tone has a tremendous barking found only with experience and desire. Sounds like the vicious Otis Grand when he finally gets his cubans...
lol...no, i wasn't one of the houndogs. i was a good friend of ronnie's. we went to school together, and lived together for a couple years in boston. wow!! the speakeasy!!! i think one of ronnie's first gigs was there. the name of the band was 'bright lights, big city'. the guy who owned it was always real great about hiring up and coming musicians as well as established guys.
yeah...anyone who knows blues will remember ronnie.
If I had to choose between watching this and sipping on a 4 litre beer glass, waiting by the charcoal grill for a well done steak with fries sprinkled with parmesan cheese and oregano, I 'd watch this.. or.. no,.. I'd watch this... Definately. I would. ..really .
Ronnies new record, Hope Radio, is out on Stony Plain Records. Released 30 October 2007, and it precedes the release of a DVD that is due early next year!
Definitely one of my favourite blues guitar players, even though he heavily relies on T-Bone citation. His sound and feeling are gorgeous.
