he's not British. Born in Mississippi, died in his 50's. He was well-known and his album with Night Train Records called "Nobody's Child." The sleeve notes tell his whole life story. He was my first cousin but I was a lot younger and lived in California so didn't get to know him well.
I've never heard this veraion before, never heard of this Bbby before either. Hey I like this version better, really! They are so typical of each other I know. It's not the music but it's his voice and how he delivers it, just that much better, but really I like the voice behind this version much better. Is he British?, Jimmy, who I just listen to prior to Bobby is American. It's better...of coarse others will disagree and stand by their man. It was Jimmy up until these past few minuets.
@Ezdduf4kuZ The sleeve notes say that this may be the original New York publishers demo of this song, or an alternate Ace recording that was discarded in favour of Jimmy's.
I like it with Jimmy Clanton, but who's the original singer of this beauty?. Jejeje my husband Lloyd just to call me like that, but once I got pregnant with our first child, jajaja, no more Venus in Blue Jeans, jajaja.
First off - always will prefer Mark Wynter's version (just love the accelerating intro). And second - weren't we short-changed in those days! Studio hands are sweeping up before you've begun singin' along!
Burl Ives sings Jimmy Clanton? It's as if they lifted the ACE recording vocal...but it does surely click...now Victor and Basil...settle down!!! Watch some telly!!!
(PS: I met the owner of Ace Records, Johnny Vincent, and got to go into one of the ACE recording studios...mum was with me...I think Johnny liked my mum!!!
No, it's 1962 (or earlier). "Venus In Bluejeans" was a top ten hit for Jimmy Clanton in the fall of 1962. This song is either the original demo or an alternate recording that was discarded in favour of Clanton's.
Mark Wynter's British cover version of this song is superior to this and Jimmy Clanton's version!

That sounds like the backing track from Jimmy Clanton's original version. Either that or someone replicated it exactly.

Mark Wynter has much more of a sweet teen idol voice. Bobby J. has quite an 'old' voice.

Wow, that's impressive - how did that come about? Did you sneak in a backing vocal onto something famous.

This was a hit in the UK for Craig Douglas in the 60's!

I think it was for Mark Wynter.
SirBasildeBrush 3 years ago
