Amazing, thankyou. Your Videos were easy to follow and have helped me a great deal. The "one bite at a time" approach you took to teaching of the banjo are excellent, I would love you to make some more instructional videos so that I could learn even more
@MifsterGoesRawr Thanks! I want to make sure everyone knows there are a ton of people on the web who offer a continuation beyond where I've left off. Just enter clawhammer lessons into youtube and bingo... Best of luck in your pickin' endeavor:)
Definitely helpful. As someone with a background in guitar who purchased his first banjo today, these videos have left me very optimistic about starting clawhammer properly. Thank you!
Thanks so much for your two videos Robert! I have watched several other clawhammer instructionals and these are the best ones I have found. Your breakdown of the righthand technique gave me a different way to approach it and it worked. Thanks again and Cheers!
thankyou mister!......im at the 'gosh this will take me forever stage' after ten years of playing it like a guitar which of course...it is not!.....thanks for you encouraging video, i will practice and play it like a banjo from now on!.....hope to see more from you, cheers : ]
@Christember.... I wish there was an easy method that I could pass onto you. Reality is, it was difficult for me as well, and the only way to overcome the 'problem' is serious practice. If there is any kind of hint, I would say that you need to have a specific tune in mind while practicing. That way, you know when you goof up, and can do it over again, as many times as it takes till you feel comfortable with it. With practice, it WILL come...
Just love your videos. As a fairly nifty finger pickin' guitarist whose v. recently taken up banjo, clawhammer seemed liked a technique for hillbilly's until I tried it and failed. This video has been a revelation and has set me on my way. Thank you. I can feel my neck getting redder as I play....
wow, thank you so much for your 2 videos! I found them so helpful, and already I'm well on my way to being able to play clawhammer style. I had watched some other tutorials before and just felt like I would never get it, but your video was very different and really helped. No doubt I'll be referring to it again for a while. Again, thank you so much! Tara.
Thank you, Tara. That describes how I felt just before I started making these two videos. I would recommend, when you're feeling confident with the process, you head over to the dailyfrail Patrick will take you to a level you never dreamed possible.
I'm having a heck of a time finding more 4-string lessons. I ordered a couple of books from amazon, but I need visuals. I like your style. It's not too "picky". I'm a rhythm guitarist just learning on an old banjo I found in an antique shop.
hey, campgiggles. No, I don't have any other vids, except Video1 in this series, which I assume you've already seen. Although I plan to put out a couple more, I'm not sure when that will be. There are a whole mess of excellent clawhammer & frailing banjo videos on the web. I would recommend you look at those of Patrick Costello. It's really good stuff.
what song is that you're playing at the opening? it sounds familiar, I can even hum along with it but can't think of the name and its driving me nuts.
Thanks for the comment, greslyel. I think the answer to you issue has to be that initially, during the learning phase, the level of concentration required to pick a single note is somewhat greater than the strum. Eventually you will get the "feel" of knowing, without looking, exactly where each string is. Don't try to combine the 3rd step with the first two until you feel comfortable with picking a single string. It will come with practice.
Your video definitely helped in simplifying the process of learning the basics for clawhammer banjo. However, I have a problem with being able to hit one string at a time. Instead I hit multiple. Do you have any suggestions or pointers?
Goog video, helped me get the hang of it ,,thanks

what tuning did you use in this video?
chazz
musichazz 1 year ago
@musichazz This is normal, open G tuning, Chazz. It may sound different because it's a nylon stringed banjo.

@rmarrsr Thank you, i was working in double C tuning, and wondering why it sounded wrong!!
