I've been car-less for about 3 years now. I've never ridden a recumbent. I'm thinking about getting one this summer. I've got my eyes on an Expedition. Right now my daily commuter is a Trek hybrid. And down here in Florida I don't have to battle any hills. The wind is my only enemy. Sometimes just heading into a light 10mph wind it takes all my energy just to get to 15mph. My question is, with the aerodynamic advantage of the recumbent, what's the fastest speed you can get up to on a flat str8?
For some accustomed to riding an average of 15 to 18 mph on an upright hybrid (Trek SU100), what kind of speed could be expected from a recumbent trike?
it depends really. I ride it several times a week to work, about an hour each way. i average about 20-25km/hr. you might be slower if your muscles aren't used to it, as the motion is a little different. or you might be faster if your legs are better than mine.
I pass a lot of upright cyclists with serious looking ultralite bikes, and spandex shorts.
Very cool. Since I posted I did find a few other videos of people who commute on their trikes. But I think you and I have the most on-trail distance and less "frightening" road sections! There is a guy in asia who commutes on the streets and his trike commute with the cars scares me!
You and I must practically be the only people who have uploaded videos of commuting to work on a trike! I was searching to find others and I think your's was the only one I could find besides mine! Enjoyed the video. and the ride!

Very nice commute. Are you clipped in? If not, have you ever considered trying some SPDs? Could increase your avg. speed...

@5TR8FLV5H I'm not clipped in here, but the next year i got some SPDs and they're great!

Looks like your commute is entirely on dedicated bike trails. do you have to ride on the streets at all during your commute? What city is that in?
dregerclock 2 years ago
Mostly bike trails, intersected by some stop lights in places. the city is Ottawa, ON.
