@force5sailor99 and i dont do regattas like you do im sure sailings a hobby for me i sail small boats sunfish jy and hobbies now this is the last think im going to say idc what you reply with because i have a life and its not spent argueing with people on youtube you sound like your a knowledgeable sailior... Happy sailing!
@force5sailor999 i love how you tell what i havent done like we are friends.. i race mtb and road bikes so i dont know a lot about sailing but i know enough anyways, your telling me when you let the sail oug no tennsion on the sail that you speed up if thats the case in sailing wrong and need to be letting the sails all the way out to go faster and all the way in most tennison i can get to slow down rofl
@potatomanjr clearly you have never sailed in your life. pulling the sails in "tighter" does not necessarily make you go faster. If you are sailing upwind at a high angle then yes sheeting in will make you sail faster but if you are reaching ( having the wind come from your side) you do not want the sails sheeted in tightly, if they are they cannot act like wings and rather than pull you forward all that will happen is side slipping, which is counter productive.
ive been involved in sailing for the past 6 years of my life and i could neverrrr image sailin 72 hours straight. these people deserve more credit than they were given
I think it is funny the fact that we have gotten so lazy when it comes to modern technology, that sailing using only a compass, a feat that was normal for hundreds of years, is now a challenge.
@v12tommy I know that at least most people understand how to use a compass, I know in America at least, so it's not that we have gotten lazy, we've just invented more conventional tools for charting the open seas, people are lazy but not because we don't use compasses as much.
@v12tommy times change its not laziness that we use more accurate equipment nowadays ! the people who invented the compass were probably seen as lazy by the people who navigated by using the stars ! as people evolve so does the technology ! i bet you wouldnt use a map and compass over a sat nav/gps in your car ? does that make you lazy ?
@v12tommy There's more to navigation that just a compass. Charts, dividers, portland ploters? This conventional gear is still being used today by most boats.
I wonder what it was like being a viking crossing the north atlantic

@aang747 its simple... you can controll how fast you go by pulling the sails tighter so if you let the sails all the way out you wont go anywhere

I get that sailing 72 hours straight is a big deal. What I dont understand is the "challenge" of doing it with modern nav equipment.
The British built and controlled the largest empire known to man without it.
