Hitch is Great. However this Toba guy is one of the most feeble and complaisant interviewers I have seen. Hitchens is someone who thrives on argument. If I had the privilege of siiting down for a conversation with Christopher, I would play devil's advocate, ask him to clarify some of his broader rhetorical sideswipes, dispute his assertions, and generally have a bit more sport with him. Firstly, I don't agree with the Mother Theresa/douchebag comment. She devoted her life to humanitarian work - if she didn't deserve to be called a decent person, then no one does.
Secondly, it's interesting that Hitchens mentioned Life of Brian. The Monty Python guys have said in an interview that they couldn't use any of Jesus's statements for comedy because (paraphrase) everything he said was so truthful, good, and sound that they couldn't make it funny. Just an interesting sidenote.

I have to agree the camera man created a sense of distraction for me. I had a hard time focusing on the interview with all those awkward movements in the screen.
Christopher hitchens is such an icon for atheists everywhere, and one of my favorite authors by far. He's way better than Jesus, or any other religion could ever be so it creates a paradox for people to want to worship him, yet it would be oxymoronic to do so. Interesting, studies show there is part of the human brain that wants to worship something whether it be earthly or supernatural and make believe.

Hitchens just speaks his mind. He's an honest guy. People want him to soften up and be a pussy but I say keep speaking your mind good sir. It's all too rare these days to come across someone who isn't afraid to say exactly what he thinks. It's very refreshing. If you want someone to point out how rediculous your religious beliefs are in a more kind and compassionate manner instead of a brutally honest and truthful manner there are plenty of other people you can go to.
One thing I've learned from Hitchens just from watching all the videos, is the value of skepticism and independent thinking. So I feel free to criticize him or challenge hi every word. It's not about exchanging one shepherd for another, for there's no way I'll be called a sheep again!

Well, I don't think they ever are, and he would better serve his cause if he kept that in mind.

They indeed did. It was the most incoherent group of theists CH has ever been set against. That short event (billed as a debate but upon watching it "debate" seems laughable because of the form it took) revealed how thin the knowledge and perspective of many theists is. It was as if CH walked into a room with a machine gun of logic, and sprayed it about massacring the theists while leaving them to bleed to death. It was as if none of them had even had to defend their utterings before.

You do realize free will itself is not proven? Many (myself included) think determinism is more likely. My view is that everything we think and do is controlled by the interplay of our bodies and the environment. It all comes down to matter, that in your body, your genes, etc. and that which is around you. It feels like we have free will, and for practical purposes we essentially have to pretend we do have it, but in reality we might not.

Firstly, I don't agree with the Mother Theresa/douchebag comment. She devoted her life to humanitarian work - if she didn't deserve to be called a decent person, then no one does.
Secondly, it's interesting that Hitchens mentioned Life of Brian. The Monty Python guys have said in an interview that they couldn't use any of Jesus's statements for comedy because (paraphrase) everything he said was so truthful, good, and sound that they couldn't make it funny. Just an interesting sidenote.

Christopher hitchens is such an icon for atheists everywhere, and one of my favorite authors by far. He's way better than Jesus, or any other religion could ever be so it creates a paradox for people to want to worship him, yet it would be oxymoronic to do so. Interesting, studies show there is part of the human brain that wants to worship something whether it be earthly or supernatural and make believe.

Good Morals were established long b4 religion or the bible. Man created that, just like the bible & religion. They took good morals we already had & put them in our religion & bible, etc. we dont need religion. God isnt here 4 an explanation of things, thats 4 science. God is here 4 LOVE. Hitchens just speaks his mind. He's an honest guy. People want him to soften up and be a pussy but I say keep speaking your mind good sir. It's all too rare these days to come across someone who isn't afraid to say exactly what he thinks. It's very refreshing. If you want someone to point out how rediculous your religious beliefs are in a more kind and compassionate manner instead of a brutally honest and truthful manner there are plenty of other people you can go to.

I too, find the antics and preachments of the snakeoil peddlers objectionable, but it is Hitchens' method of delivery Gwiss, that I find rather patronising. I think he rather enjoys the cut and thrust of the debate, as I most times do, but there are moments when I wince, when he becomes insufferably rude and boorish, and jokes about good manners being "overrated". Well, I don't think they ever are, and he would better serve his cause if he kept that in mind.

They indeed did. It was the most incoherent group of theists CH has ever been set against. That short event (billed as a debate but upon watching it "debate" seems laughable because of the form it took) revealed how thin the knowledge and perspective of many theists is. It was as if CH walked into a room with a machine gun of logic, and sprayed it about massacring the theists while leaving them to bleed to death. It was as if none of them had even had to defend their utterings before.

You do realize free will itself is not proven? Many (myself included) think determinism is more likely. My view is that everything we think and do is controlled by the interplay of our bodies and the environment. It all comes down to matter, that in your body, your genes, etc. and that which is around you. It feels like we have free will, and for practical purposes we essentially have to pretend we do have it, but in reality we might not.
