help i downloaded my template from youtubedesigns so then i took it to gimp and i am trying to change the colors in the back and there is a dotted yellow and black box selected in one part of the template and it only lets me color in there but i need to color other parts of it too and it wont let me please help

sounds like your text boxes are being placed behind your image layers.

go to your layers and drag the text layer above the image layer. that will reorder them and it should appear on top.

Marquee Tool. He pronounces it incorrectly. Just your rectangle selection tool.
