BEAUTIFUL SONG, the lyrics touched my heart...the one who disliked this don't know Jesus. I'm not sure if PM Dawn was singing about God but the lyrics to the song Patient Eyes they could have been.
@MrPeterpc2 Are you referring to the group or the band that backed them up? The 5th Dimension were a real group that record in the studio AND performed LIVE on stage. Florence LaRue is the only original member who still performs with four others AS the 5th Dimension. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr also still perform as a duet. Back in the 60s and 70s, the Wrecking Crew was their back up band in the studio and many of the musicians also toured with them.
Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson. I remember them doing UP,UP AND AWAY on Sesame Street and it was so very special to me. I wish Ron was still alive and all of them got together again;just to make a statement about what group music is all about.
Yes this is a wonderful song and they have beautiful voices but they should list the 3 things : to see Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly and follow Thee more nearly
One of the best things about the Fifth Dimension was that they never limited themselves to recording stuff from only one genre. Then, again, back when they were recording, that was true of many groups. But Fifth Dimension was always a treat to listen to!
This should have been released as a single--and starting around 3:00 there should have been clapping (as in Let the Sun Shine In). This was another mistake by their record company--who also should have released "Blackpatch" from Individually & Collectively. This group has never gotten is due. It's ridiculous. Marilyn's tone is beautiful here--and the movement into gospel from pop smooth.
There are people who can do the style that they do. However , no record label will promote them . Evan if they did the 5th D would still be I very high standard to live up to. It is such a fine sound and to be done by a group . Nice to be able to listen to them again.

Countless hit after hit in the 70's , very underated singers , i read somewhere that in they debue they were booed i guess because of their style of singing but looked how they evolved and made hit after hit Aquarius was a smash.
dang, i was born in 66, my older sisters and brother had all these cool albums around the house and i grew up loving this, still do, a classic NEVER goes out of style.
@iwasanangryyoungman why? That show is aural vivisection. They should hooked up to headphones playing bagpipe music at deafening volume for the musical crimes on that show. They actually make hate songs I previously liked after those squeaky voiced fags perform them.
I am so happy that the past eras have been been recorded and immortalized. To think that anyone, any age at any time can experience this wonderfull music really makes me so thankfull. What Music. This is real candy for the ears and comfort food for my tired brain and weary soul.
@MrVideogreg Totallly, hear you on the tired brain, weary soul thing. Music is the one thing that can give me some solice. Especially this older stuff from the 60's and 70's. This music was/is hopeful.
@StanBennet I am the same way. I know the Beatles were popular, but the 5th Dimension doesn't grate. Same goes for Beach Boys. Love them too. But I think more instruments were used with Beach Boys and 5th Dimension than with the Beatles.
The Beatles were influential to be sure but there was too much going on musically in the 60s to say they set the tone; especially for Black America. The Beatles were great in their genre; but couldn't have pulled off a performance like this.
It's just about possible to avoid recent pop music [the last 30 odd years I mean], if one tries hard enough, and just revel in this kind of stuff from an era that valued harmony etc.
She really rips off a nice line starting at 0:39, especially the last half of that vocal run. (As it she closes it at 0:43). Wow, that was nice - my ears just loved that.
@MsTexas73 MsTexas73, these songs are truly among the greatest recordings of all time aren't they. The music is just so good. The great vocalists/vocalist groups could do this; sing an original hit(rendition) and completely do it in their own way. Marylin M.s working of this song and the 5th's group remake is fabuuulous.
@hitomusic They are FAB songs indeed. With this particular tune...I love Marilyn's lead off...then her blend with Flo...ALMOST as if one voice there...then Billy's lead on the final verse and chorus is just the cherry on top...PERFECTO!
What I like aside fomr the wonderful harmonnies in this...the three leads of Marilyn, Florence, and Billy...it just WORKS. And how each one comes in and blends back...LOVE IT!
Your right about Marilyn McCoo's voice. This is a lovely rendition of this song. But this is not an original Fifth Dimension song. It came from the Godspell.
fd4519.Great sound ,composition and music that surroun our lives. We are going to dream with the future that brings light, passion, love, confidence, truth and much, much love.Marilyn McCoo as the lead singer in this woundrous Fifth Dimension. The per formance of the group is wounderful.Listening this great composition,we dream with the Earth in the Universe created by God,our father that brings much love and health for us.Congratulations.Thanks.
The Fifth Dimension most accurately set the tone for the '60's than any other group because they were the forerunners of the flower children and their philosophy done so beautifully in music. This was a fabulous group and I used to look forward to every new song. Later, when drugs, etc. took over, the beauty of this sound was lost to the grinding heavy metal and incoherent noise, in many cases. The '60's seemed to destroy so many good things it came in contact with during it's time. Too bad.
@Halo101st ..Sorry but have to correct you on that one. It was the Beatles that set the tone for the 1960's, and this is clearly evident by all the artists of the time that copied their style with both fashion and music. 5th Dimension were a Muzak reprieve from the hard grinding stuff that was starting to emerge. Even the The Supremes were a little bit too raucous at times.
@BlogShag I think you are probably right there. I was never much of a Beatles fan and looked elsewhere. There was such a variety of sound in the 60's that once you settled on one you tended to think they were the influential group. The Beatles definitely were THE heavyweights, however.
The original song was lovely, but the Fifth Dimension, as they nearly always did, produced a cover that was better, and a much better one at that. In fact, I would say this is Billy Davis Jr's finest recording: his outro vocal is just breathtaking.
They always had such wonderful arrangements [and songwriters] to work with. With a team like that how could they fail. Superb vocals, and a sublime song - with one of the nicest set of chord progressions ever assembled.
Doris day sang a version in her special. Very close in arrangement. Excellent too, but 5th D nails it. The original cast recording from the show and movie is very flat
@ra86226 You're right, Robin Lamont could barely sing, but God forbid you mention that in the comment section of the original cast recording where I practically got crusified, and then deleted! And I was civil about how I did it too, but indeed, the 5D nailed nearly everything they touched. And w/Nyro & Webb, it was an unbeatable combination! One of the best vocal groups ever.
This should have been released and promoted--it would have been a hit (at least on Adult Contemporary). The move from ballad to pop to gospel is amazing.
A stand out track from their 1973 Bell label album LIVING TOGETHER, GROWING TOGETHER. This was a fantastic album which produced the minor hits ASHES TO ASHES and the title track).
orchidislander, what can we say...............a group from that time and era that really stood out with their song/style/vocals.......God Bless Them........Amen
Get crazy listening to their music. The word GREAT is not enough to describe their compositions. Fifth Dimension, i love you DAY BY DAY to my last breath.
correct bones howe hired many if not all of the musicians. holman wrote the charts.
and yep Hal was on all of their recordings in fact now that I'm thinking about it ? Hal was on almost EVERYTHING in that decade including Jack Jones "wives and lovers" that one really shocked me.
I know you're right!!!!!!!!!! I am about to learn how to play the piano, and one of the first songs you're gonna hear on it is DAY BY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jus love this song. The swinging groove is happenin' , mon. tock! -- tock! -- tock! -- tock! That is one sweet groove, man. Limme jus start movin' to that. Throw down some steady hand-clap to that.
Another glorious Fifth Dimension cover. Their covers usually easily surpassed the original. One of Billy Davis' greatest performances. Unforgettable ending.
LightZings.....You have delivered here in a BIG way. I have looked for years, trying to find this song; which I had and wore out in the 70's, on an 8 track. I saw them perform this "live" at the RIVIERA Hotel main showroom
in Las Vegas, October of 1974. Marilyn and Billy "killed' this song and the audience stood up and went wild with appreciation. Thanks for posting this and bringing back that great performance memory; thus putting an end to my 30 year search. This means a lot
I also saw the 5th perform this song a couple of times in the mid 70's. It was sung just before a break in the show. Will never forget Marilyn McCoo's clear and on point vocal lead and the astounding power of Billy Davis' voice. Brings back amazing memories. Thanks for the post.
I love this song - love the voices - they're wonderful.

soulful in their own way, unmatched in harmony and vocal content, this group could sing the phonebook and you'd love it!

Marilyn McCoo is one of the best pop female vocalists-as soon as she starts singing, you know who it is. Same for Karen Carpenter.

Get crazy listening to their music. The word GREAT is not enough to describe their compositions. Fifth Dimension, i love you DAY BY DAY to my last breath.

"bones howe" was responsible for the horns strings and rhythm section as was the great bill holman

"Bones" Howe, PRODUCED their albums. Bill Holman was responsible for the arrangements. Hal Blaine was the drummer on ALL of their "sessions."

correct bones howe hired many if not all of the musicians. holman wrote the charts.
and yep Hal was on all of their recordings in fact now that I'm thinking about it ? Hal was on almost EVERYTHING in that decade including Jack Jones "wives and lovers" that one really shocked me.

Another glorious Fifth Dimension cover. Their covers usually easily surpassed the original. One of Billy Davis' greatest performances. Unforgettable ending.

This is one of the greatest songs and vocal performances in the history of music.

This means a lot
to me.

I also saw the 5th perform this song a couple of times in the mid 70's. It was sung just before a break in the show. Will never forget Marilyn McCoo's clear and on point vocal lead and the astounding power of Billy Davis' voice. Brings back amazing memories. Thanks for the post.

Great vocals and arrangement. The song moves from pop to soul to gospel without missing a beat.
