Apparently (or according to the history textbook I have in front of me) Emily Davison didn't intend to die, she wanted to attach a Suffragette banner to the horse to gain further publicity for the cause. But obviously, there is still debate about this...

She may have been trying to be hit by the horse, but not die, just get injured...
