  • while i was watching this vid. my neighbor was working on his table saw. And it sounded like bagpipes chanting in the background. really cool

  • ABC or Tab for 1:40? I've been playing the standard grove for months, but was looking for a variation.

  • brill first attempt......it took me a few more takes....did banish misfortune on banjo

  • Nice work youself - I see you also had a look at lenbanman. I see Len quite often at a session in Winchester.

  • Pure pleasure!

You're getting a lovely sound out of that Mandola (it looks like a Moon - but the video's a little blurred). May I make so bold as to ask you what strings (gauges) you are using (I assume you're tuned GDAE or GDAD)?

  • It is a Fylde Touchstone tuned GDAE. Just started using GDAD for a few. I use plain 13, phos bronze wound 24, 36 & 52. It came with these - I tried lighter but didn't get the tone.

Just had a look at your stuff - nice work yerself !!!

  • Thanks for the info.

Yep, I'm still experimenting.......hopefully I'll get the right combination someday.. :o)

Post more stuff - it's brilliant!

  • Fabulous!

  • Stan...Some times the first attempts are the best. Fantastic!

    Thanks

    Dave

  • Great playing, I loved it!

  • My great grandfather Robert Ferguson knew this song! He was born in 1845 at Lough Fea, & later lived & raised 11 kids in the Parish of Lissan on 'a farm of land' in Letteran Road on the lower slopes of Sleive Gallon, before coming to N.Z. in 1913. Astoundingly his granddaughter married in N.Z. a McGarvey who also originated from Sleive Gallon!

What a beautiful song...brought tears to my eyes as the tales of Ireland have been passed down to Robert's decendants on the far side of the world!

  • I did not expect to find anyone playing this song on youtube, I was actually born and raised in slieve gallion in the parish of Diseart Mhartain and had to play this song in my primary school play on the tin whistle lol great playing

  • This is a great song. Good start

  • Stan,Please post more music because so far I have not managed to learn any instrument at all and I rely on great players like you to keep me sane.

P.S. Cash waiting for your c.d.!!!!!

  • Jim, if it's sanity you're after....you've come to the wrong place !!! :)

Sadly, I just don't find the time to more.

    All the best, Sean

  • Fair enough Sean, but thanks for the great playing on the ones you have posted, you are a vey talented man.

    Good luck,Ian.

  • Lovely playing lad. Really nice. keep posting.

  • great playin, could you post tab for "sliebh gallion braes?" please

  • Sorry, I don't know tab. I play by ear and only read dots slowly.

  • Sir, that is masterful playing - thank you

  • Thanks for your kind words - actually, listening to it again I think it's a little rushed - I might have another go now I'm more familiar with videoing.

  • Beautiful song and playing.

  • Thanks - my first video - I might record the complete song next.
