I don't think unbridled "slaughter" is a right, but defending themselves is a right and is why I understand and don't condemn the Sadr militia. It's a tough case to think about when those who are being "slaughtered" are Americans that could be people you know. I disagree with us being there, but I also disagree with killing in general. Most of these poor soldiers disagree with why they're there, too-but they can't get out of the army once they're in it.

I have yet to see a study or a poll taken in Iraq of the U.S. military and what they have to say about being in Iraq, what they are doing, how they feel about it etc..Unless a non biased study exist to determine these things, then to say they disagree with why they are there is not an accurate statement.

I have seen a number of videos on stations like Al Jazeera interviewing soldiers and talking about how they feel about the war in Iraq. I haven't seen a definitive poll, although it may well exist, but I haven't heard of too many soldiers who have come back and said "wow, we're really kicking ass over there and making headway, this was so worth it" the ones I hear about and have spoken to come back disillusioned and depressed and say there's no military solution.

I agree we need a military, but it's hard to reconcile who will fight in it-if people form small towns were given more opportunities to be productive, there may not be so many who would choose to join the army-what would we do then?

Another thing-I don't believe we should have gotten into this war in the first place, but I believe it is immoral to leave Iraq in the mess we have put it in. Are Iraqi citizens not deserving of their human rights? Because that's what we'd deny them if we leave. Civil war and terrorism would rake the country if we were just to pull out our troops right now. Atrocities far worse than Americans at home could ever imagine or have to face themselves would take place.

In fact, Iraqi politicians are very scared the US will leave right away-they are stuck between a rock and a hard place-they want the U.S. to stay for security, but hate that they are not able to govern themselves and manage their own security-they want assurances we won't be here in the long run, as well as assurances that we will be here in the short run until their police and security forces are able to control what's happening on the ground by themselves.

We are trying to let them govern themselves but the political groups in government have not yet learned how to work together, so not much is getting done. I agree we've meddled in the wrong way in their government, but we haven't created the mistrust between parties-that is something we should be working on-national reconciliation. Luckily some NGOs are working on track two dialogues to assist in national reconciliation, and are making some head way-albeit slowly due to trust issues.

This side does deserve to be heard, but it also needs to be educated. I don't like the war either, but like it or not, the surge has made dramatic changes in security on the ground in Iraq according to my Iraqi friends. Without it, the help of some grassroots Iraqi efforts to fight Al Qaeda, such as the tribal Awakening council, may not have been inspired enough to get off the ground.
