Nilsson blows Randy Newman out of the water. Hell, Nilsson could take a Slayer song and make it better. Harry had a knack for making songs his own no matter if he wrote them or not. Such an amazing talent. Too bad he's gone.
Fantastic, haunting, superlative, superlative, superlative. Harry Nilsson. This man's voice crawls around your brain and throws a comfortably blanket over it. Regarding this particular song, I only wish it was longer!
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had a great version of this song on their album "Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy" w-a-y back in the early 70's. Nilsson's is too slow for me although I enjoy some of his lesser known songs. His album "Harry" was especially good, which included "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City". Randy Newman has written some amazing songs over the years.
In 1971 or 1972, a band recorded Randy Newman's "Living Without You". I can hear the song in my head but don't know who it was. It wasn't Nilsson, wasn't Newman--who can help me here.
Nilsson and Newman are BOTH great artists!

Such an incredibly sad song. It's the equal to Newman's original, for two entirely different reasons. This and Love Story.

@weedermann There's a more rock-oriented cover by a 60s artist named Keith Shields. His version is on YouTube as well.

I never bother disagreeing with people over music--after all, there's no accounting for taste.
But seriously.
You believe the Manfred Mann version is superior to THIS?
