@nickjktucker And O.M.D. after "Junk Culture", Human League after "Dare"!, even Tears for Fears creatively diminished following the debut. These bands were obviously pursuing the American Pop-Rock market, shame..though I'll admit a few songs were okay.
@xreddragonx Talk Talk are probably one of the only few bands I know where their albums got progressively better and better - hope you give them a go if you haven't already - blissful !!
Depois de tantos anos a realidade do Brasil não mudou. As criaças continuam pobres e as praias continuam abertas para ricos extrangeiros. É uma pena a desigualdade social nesse país tão bonito.
@sidrocker Nail on the head. I put together a playlist recently, 30 tracks but I was totally stumped when I got to the end of New Gold Dream. Just couldn't add another tune as anything after would have ruined the mood of the playlist...Pity.
One of the greatest tracks from their last truly great album (including the SFC album). It's all about Brian McGee's drums and Derek Forbes's bass. Rock solid.
One of the first albums I bought was Glittering Prize 81/92, in a quest to form a small collection of quality music, before internet and digital downloads. I only knew the major hits, but when I listened to Love Song and The American I was astonished and immediately captivated by the superb layers of sound and the unique construction of lyrics.
A few days later I got the compact Sons and Sister, over an hour of truly brilliant music. Since then, I have discovered hundreds of other bands and styles, but up until today I still regard the unfolding of this album as the most fulfilling listening experience ever.
This track was placed in the right spot on the album because it is atmospheric with Mick's synth, yet a bit Waterfront rock tempo, yet followed by the fast Love Song then slowed down with Seeing Out the Angel etc. If only they had known we, and not just hardcore Minds fans, would be listening to this over and over almost 30 years later. It sits with many other classic albums such as Dark Side of the Moon. Ironically, these tracks seem more radio friendly now.
makes me think of two warriors who hate each other and know only one is walking away. i like that feeling and i like playing this speeding on the BQE Brooklyn Queens Expressway, for the slow.
Who's the best Simple Minds or U2,that was the question25 years ago;still do not know zi answer?U2 never made songs like this 3 albums(this one;sons and fascination, theme for great cities, new gold dream)!U2 made it,simple minds also, but on a quite way,so????Such a nice album anyway!
I got into both bands at the same time ('80's), and used to sort of compare them to each other--but I soon realized that there were no comparisons to be made!
To this day, there are a handful of U2 songs I like, but I love ALL the early Simple Minds!
I used to try to get people to dance to this stuff (when I was a club DJ), but without much success!
I also used to play SM in between the stripper sets, when I worked at a strip club!
Simple Minds at their artistic best - 1981 - "Babies cannot handle crocodiles" The song was inspired by Ira Levin's book of the same name - well worth reading - check out the film too with Gregory Peck, Laurance Oliver and a very young Steven Guttenburg (at the beginning). Neo Nazis, cloning, fascism, the second coming, being butchered by dogs - serious stuff (o;
I'll post on this again, but the drum beat is excellent; what an amazing album this is... one of my Top 10 albums ever... I'd put Talk Talk's Spirit Of Eden in there too plus David Sylvian's Gone To Earth Double Album in there as well
interesting, i did like Talk Talk and David Sylvian from what i heard around at the time, but never got around to buying an album of theirs. what songs would you recommend?
This album has an uncommonly long sequence of great songs--songs that you don't need to skip over. This song is somewhere in the middle of that sequence.
1981 : période par encore commercial pour les Minds. La meilleure diront certains. Moi j'adore toute l'œuvre des Minds. A chaque album, un son différent.
Why's everyone comparing Simple Minds to U2? I don't get it. They're not even the same genre really. Apples to Oranges.
