A Mr Armando Musical from San Bruno, California, writes to me: "Indudablemente que fue['] un "Genio". Gracias por el comentario." High compliment indeed. We share the same high esteem of Ruben Gonzalez/the Buena Vista Social Club - a divine gift to mankind - blocked by the uncivilized Americans and their 'embargo.' But we who can listen to it and revel in its life-affirming glory can only say, "Gracias, gran maestro."
Truly, they never cease to amaze me! I must have heard dozens of bands - big, brass-and-string bands, small bands, play this delicious song, and here is Ruben Gonzalez, aged one hundred and ninety something producing this amazing tour de force! They were special - that Buena Vista Social Club.
Worked as stage manager for ruben many years ago in dublin ,on his comeback before he joined the beuna vista social club-beautiful pianist and a really smart and courteous gentleman, absolute pleasure to watch in whelans in dublin around 1994??
650 people in a 300 capacity bar,but nobody gave out!!
Köszönöm a gyönyörű melódiákat, nyugodj békében, Maestro!
this amazing artist is up there with the Da Vinci's , çause with his piano he can paint a Mona Lisa, he is just incredible , his talent is tremendous, if there was a museum for music like there is for paintings , no doubt that this theme would be there.
Yes this is surely one of the most beautiful instrumental songs ever written- and how many different versions were made ? Hundreds I bet! Ruben Gonzales' version is one of my favorites - Paco de Lucia also does an interesting version- and Xavier Cugat's version is so evocative of those popular orchestra's of the 1950s.
This is a kind of music that gives the caracter of the Cuban populations.
But it whil disapere when the government give mor freedom and trade possibiltys, becouse the American influence will come and damage all the original musicstyle,s . After that whe must do it with recording musicians.
Hello, yes a lot of musicians went to America, but why???.
Becouse the same America used end boycot them in several decades en in several way,s.
America is a land that try to occupied every nation with his influence. Europe has it after WW2 . And that has nothing to do with a social behavior, only with egocentric thinking and acting..
DietseGeus-Not at all so! There exists more great music in Cuba today in a country of less than 11 million people- than most others with at least 10 times as many..
@DietseGeus I don't blame them. If you are going to live under Castro's Regime I will flee. Who can live in a system like that. I'd rather drown in the Ocean.
@DietseGeus -Bullshit.Where do you get your info.Is it from your imaginary trips there. You might be funny were you not so dense and misinformed. Sad indeed.
@DietseGeus you think so because fucked up usa trade embargoes cuba and prevents you from hearing any music made in there. they dont even let cuba to have internet, so you can get the music through internet.
I have to say that I somewhat disagree, I live in Miami and have witnessed first hand the Cuban culture and their music. Many great Cuban musicians came to Miami and the US to continue to play the music they love. In post revolution Havana, many social music clubs were forced to close leaving the musicians with no creative outlet. This music is not newly founded, it will live on regardless, I know, I have witnessed it first hand.
Americans were in Cuba when all this music came to life. Cuban music is so good that can co-exist with American music, which is great too. They took from each other and still they never lost their own spirit. Remember Chano Pozo introducing congas and afro rhythms in bee bop, also the influence that American jazz bands had on Cuban music bands like Benny More´s
When we hear a tune like this one, we got a strange feelling that we're hearing something that's about to be over. Unless other Corder apears, it may be shut up for ever.
thanks for posting this i bought the 2 set of the social club at carnegie hall , i will buy a cd of rubun gonzales as soon as I can , he's pure magic .. bev melbourne australia
i will take this one..it so lovely to sway around..alone hahahahaha..how doyou call this type of music..balsee?i remember mom and dad do the balsee..thanks for posting..v*
