@Ekimoglu I agree that it was the war that made the genocide happen. The government was suspicious of Armenians being disloyal. They scapegoated their disastrous military failures against Russia in 1914/15 on them (defeats which happened because of stupid decisions, like invading the Caucasus in winter). But just because it happened during war and they thought Armenians were the enemy doesn't mean that it shouldn't be called genocide.

What happened was that the Russians supported an Armenian rebellion, and Armenian irregulars named 'fedayi' (with organizations such as 'taschnaksouitin) attacked Muslim villages and people. The Ottoman response was to 'move' the local Armenians to Syria, which was a widely-used practice at the time (by Britain and the US).

@GenBanks Now if you look at the archives you see tons of documentation showing that the Ottomans provided supplies, food, medical camps along the way, security, milk for pregnant women, etc to the Armenians (available on armeniangenocidedebate). So there was no attempt by the gov't to 'eradicate' the Armenians, hence no 'genocide'...and many Turkish civilians were killed by Armenian irregulars and the photographs, documents, graves of these people are available.

@GenBanks However, Eastern Turkey has always been a center of brigands, especially with the local Kurdish majority who have been brigands traditionally for centuries (called 'Eskiya'). This is not an attempt to blame anything on our Kurdish brothers or make them seem evil, again there was no genocide, but their raids did result in Armenian deaths. And so it was war like I said, people were killed on both sides, but there was never an order or attempt to eradicate Armenians.
