Flip, why do the Kiwi's get so pessimistic when they have such a great tourney on their doorstep. The stand'll be fine, as will everything else. Enjoy it and stop grumbling. You don't know how lucky you are duckies.
I'm sorry but to all of those saying that the stadium couldn't be any bigger because Auckland can't afford anything bigger I must ask the question, why is New Zealand hosting the world cup then? This is the largest stadium in the tournament..really? 03's largest stadium was 80K+, 07's largest stadium was 80K+, 15's largest stadium is going to be 90K+. Some of the World Cup's stadiums are around 15K..really? My local football team plays in a stadium that size. This was a bad choice by the IRB.
@9Bushnell why would you have a massive staduim when you wouldnt have the population to fill it? Look at the host cities that had those big stadiums-Pari and Sydney. Sydney has the same population and the whole of NZ
@marcellin20a Exactly, my point is New Zealand isn't big enough to host the world cup, and that's shown so far by the poor turn outs because of how high ticket prices have been so as to break even due to NZ's small stadiums. The IRB has estimated that they are losing over $10 million (USD) because of New Zealand hosting the tournament. The only reason why England is hosting the tournament in 2015 is because the IRB badly need the money from England so as to make up for their losses in NZ.
@9Bushnell Whats your problem.... 15k for the smaller games...? Its the Rugby world cup, not the football world cup, its not going to have a TV audience of nearly 2 billion people And have average attendances of over 40k for every match. The best thing about the Rugby world cup in England is that because of the football stadia already in place and it been England's 2/3 national sport the IRB can maximize profit because the infrastructure is already there. (Thanks to football)
I was there 2nyt for the warriors game. the attendance was 38,412. The whole stadium really is looking world class now and it's great how you can walk all the way round it from any entrance. It generated an awesome atmosphere 2nyt. It'll be nuts with an extra 22,000 people there. LoL But I would of liked the waterfront stadium too.
The waterfront idea would have been a lot more expensive but it would have more than paid off because they could have also used it for concerts and even made it the Warriors permanent ground, hosted All Whites games and maybe future commonwealth games. Eden Park wouldn't look so bad if they demollished the western stand and they should have continued the new south stand right round where the western and eastern stands are and joining the northern ASB stand.
It's not too bad guys, We wont have enough people to fill up this stadium post world cup so the govt has done the right thing in terms of redoing Eden Park. With the crowd being so close to the pitch there will be a great atmosphere generated I am sure. It's about time us Kiwis became positive, backed ourselves and individually do the best we can to host this event.
Ewwwwwwwwwwwww YUCK... I can't believe this piece of crap will be broadcasted to the world next year. Why can't Auckland get its act together and make a NATIONAL stadium for the Allblacks - a Stadium to rival the world's best. Until then, Auckland will always just be a piece of shit to me. Fuck. I can't believe I live here.
In years to come, I hope that get rid of that shitty blue & white stand, and put up a decent stand. It would create a better atmosphere, and bring capacity up to 65,000 - 70,000.
wat a shocking stadium .. new zealand shoudnt have been awarded the world cup in the 1st place anyway .. i mean just look at the stadiums in northalnd and nelson and invercargil .. not 2 mention fmg stadium ... absolutely disgraceful ! nz dnt hav da money 2 host an event of this magnitude . the world cup FINAL will b played in a ugly stadium that can only hold 60,000 and is located in the middle of a residential area .. pathetic ... wat were the IRB thinkn
eden park is the worst stadium in the world, even after it's make-over it will still be the worst stadium in the world. they would have been better demolishing the whole stadium and starting from scratch. useless pricks

There are no stands there from the 1960s. The oldest one there is the west stand which was built in the 1980s. The final of the world cup in 1995 was played in Ellis park which was mostly rebuilt in the 1980s.
so what ellis park is better than this piece of shit ground, plus ellis park was in 95 man, look at the 99 03 07 stadiums, 2011 should be better than all of them, and eden park isn't! even ami stadium and wellington stadium are better than eden shit

Well tough biscuits. The Labour govt wanted to build a state-of-the-art waterfront stadium, but the auckland regional council rejected it. Rest assured, Eden Park will be adequate. The upgrade will provide worldclass facilities for patrons. That is what counts. What the stands look like is only important to arty-farty poofters who are into art and architecture.
What a dissapointment! This is the best Auckland could come up with?????? You mean months of fighting amongst themselves and this is the result? This is pretty poor! This is ugly and as far as i'm concerned NOT up to international standards!!!!!! The waterfront stadium looked sooo much better! Stupid, SELFISH Aucklanders.... You should be ashamed of yourselves! You guys better not stuff this world cup up!!!!!!!!!!! UGLY STADIUM!
"Stupid, SELFISH Aucklanders.... You should be ashamed of yourselves!"
the waterfront stadium would have cost in excess of 1 BILLION dollars! why would aucklanders want to pay for that? lets not forget the fact that it would have cost the city MILLIONS due to lost revenue in freight due to the fact that the waterfront would no longer be able to be used for cargo..
I just don't want to see us become the laughing stock of the rugby world because Auckland couldn't get there shit together! And as far as I'm concerned.... It's New Zealands world cup NOT just Auckland's so maybe they should have consulted the rest of the country first! My expectation's were high until I saw this disaster, I really do hope they have their heads screwed on for the Opening and Closing ceremony's............... Or the finger will be pointed at Auckland!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck:)
its not auckland getting its shit together...its the goverment not fronting up!!
theres lik 1.3million people in auckland...but only 400,000 in 'auckland city' where the stadium is situated thats why they cant come up with the money...because it dont exist. and other councils wont help.
I'd like to see any other city in the country front up 390million
Auckland wouldn't have paid $1billion dollars. All of NZ would've paid for it. Those were just bullshit figures bandied about by scaremongerers. Load of shit. Eden Park is a disgrace. Auckland fully deserves this shit stadium in the middle of a residential area.
you really have no idea what you're on about. it was already stated that auckland city would pay for the new stadium. not new zealand. the government estimated it would cost around 300-400 million dollars. architects and engineers estimated that it would cost 1 billion dolllars. in addition to that building cost of the stadium, the country would also lose billions on the lack of shipping and freight occurring within the waterfront area.
lol well we all know they should have continued the stands around to make it a complete bowl...but LOL dude you cant blame us aucklanders...we dont like it either?
its the politicians in charge of auckland and n.z not the people
The last labour govt was going to totally fund a brand spanking new waterfront stadium for 60,000 people. Guess who said no? ...The lobby-group infested Auckland regional council.
The stadium looks fine. With NZ's small population (4 million), the central / local government are never going to be able to afford the stadiums you see overseas. Westpac stadium in Wellington should have been built to cater to 50,000 instead of 35,000.
The WESTPAC Stadium, or should I say Caketin, Cookie Jar, etc is a shit hole, Ideal for Cricket, Round Stadiums are shit for Rugby seeing as its a Rectangular field lol.
@sportypaulos You have obviously not watched a rugby game at Westpac stadium. You get a great view of the game from every seat in the house. It also has the best atmosphere of any stadium in NZ. You should go to the 7s, it might expand your little world
@Hanzo1986 I totally agree with you here bro, this would've been outstanding, but because of stuck up hoi ti toite no gooder rich people who stay in Hi rise motels & penthouses in down town akl city, they didn't want to be woken up early in the mornin' by hammering etc. so the Auckland City Council listened to these sons of bitches..
lol, good point, though in this day and age there may be a solution to that like a retractable/semi-retractable roof, like sheeting of some kind that come out of the stand roofs? I don't know, but I would hope someone thought of that problem...
I like both Football and rugger. Football is more technical and Rugger more tough. However eye gauging and blood cheats is worse than diving I am afraid.
I totally agree with you, having a retractable roof would be a good as it could be used as something more than just a rugby stadium - they totally cheaped out on the design in my opinion - It just looks like a collection of stands rather than a stadium
