I saw this guy Jan or Feb 1973 at a spare school auditorium in Monterrey, CA and he certainly could do the psychedelic 3 octave note runs until you couldn't follow them anymore... He was very hot on the axe........
Harvey Mandel plays in a straight blues setting on STAND BACK! Charlie Musselwhite on Vanguard. 1966 Nobody was playing blues guitar like this except maybe Jeff Beck. Maybe the blues purists don't dig it but it's very innovative and unique in blues. The album has 6 vocals and 6 instrumentals. Near perfect production. Another album around same time is Barry Goldberg
BLOWIN MY MIND also on CD. The 3 played on each other's albums.
What a nice video thanks for post it "randcrook"..hey folk if anyone her have a idea the name of the track, when and where was play it? in the minutes 1:21- 1:51 and 5:29..i looking for a little help from my friends!!!..thanks!!!
Ya, Beck liked Mandel. I saw Mandel warm up for Beck in the mid 70's. I don't think the crowd had heard of Mandel. One asshole even threw a beer can at him on stage (missed). Mandel didn't look too happy the whole time. I think Mandel's Snake album is one of the most under-rated LP's. Beck's Blow By Blow was touted as the first instrumental rock guitar LP in '75, but Mandel's Snake came out in '72 (it only had one song with vocals). Mandel was also into finger tapping a decade before Van Halen.
@Smudgefizz Those fans must have been pretty stupid. Harvey played with Charlie Musselwhite, Canned Heat, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and The Rolling Stones and they thought he was a nobody. That's hilarious. You must not forget Cristo Redentor which is probably the FIRST guitar album ever made and the Holy Grail of music.
nice job making this clip..Harvey is one of my favorites from way back, got to meet him after all these years at The Crossroads Festival...what a talent..
this guy is pretty good, but i wouldn't necessarily say he's a psychedelic guitarist?when it comes to that and acid rock, people like Hendrix and John Cipollina are the 'premier' players >:D
No, boss. Harvey Mandel is one of the all time great fender-men in electric guitar history. So are Hendrix and Cipolina.. For example, Check out "Jimi the Fox" on Barry Goldbers's "Two Jews Blues" album which is available on your youtube
It's a damn shame more people have not watched this. I can remember hearing the Stones track "Hotstuff" when I was kid and blown away by the guitar solo's. How in the hell did he play that stuff...Also I heard Terry Kilgore say that Harvey taught him and EVH how to tap.
My favourite Mandel's tune is "Planetary Warrior". Please listen with a good stereo. Amazing guitar tone and amazing song,,,,
