Is it possible for a GT inverter to malfunction and cause the meter to spin faster (not in reverse) and actually raise your electricity consumption.
Could the GT inverter get confused and instead of sending current to grid it actually pulls energy from the grid. Have you ever heard of this happening?
There should be a gym where the patrons get paid for their energy input. For example if you work out 1 hour for 20W or whatever than that's .02 kWh. Therefore you get 0.02*0.010 = $0.0002 per hr of working out.......... wow, bad idea.
I'VE been thinking about that type thing for aeons. Its not so much that a gym could go off the grid.. But just think, in someplace like San Francisco, where there are thousands of psudo-intellectual urbanites with just enough education to think they know what's going on but don't. Put green in the title of the gym, offer granola and water with a fancy name.. BOOM, got a yuppie gym turning a profit, and a bunch of full of themselves patrons.

Great info...Since a capacitor can store electric energy when disconnected from its charging circuit, can it be used like a temporary battery. Most capacitors are commonly used in electronic devices to maintain power supply while batteries are being changed. Could you jerry rig a car audio system's capacitor as a supplementary energy source on demand. Also could the flash tube capacitor that is used to hold the high voltage in ceiling fans have application. Possible to see a video???
Capacitors are SHORT TERM storage only, they aren't like batteries, as they will dump everything they can into a circuit, regardless of its actual power reqs, I was told to think of capacitors as 'lakes', the second you let the 'lake' 'free', you're going to get the maximum flow regardless of what is 'downlake' of the cap.

Thanks for this. I am curious your thoughts on how we can get the grid set up to put all sorts of power inputs back into it (bikes, solar shingles, everything we can dream up.) It all starts with the grid
combine solar cell output creating 2 kilowatts for a commercial magnatron could heat water inside a box of interconnected CPVC pipe, for instant-on hat water for you major uses like bathing or washing clothes.
What would be interesting is to compare, using the same equipment in the video, different types of "engines" that could drive that generator and see how much each one produces. Steam engine, gas engine, diesel engine, human power etc etc I'm not sure how you would compare like-for-like but you guys are smart so you'll figure it out. Maybe by BTU or something? Anyway...hope you take my suggestion and post it. Thumbs up if you want to see this done!
I have a question - could something on a smaller scale be attached to the wheels of car?? You figure, the car is spinning (4) tires any number of miles in a day... If you have the power feeding into some batteries in the trunk or something... What if every car in California was doing that! Wow - Thanks for sharing this.
I sat on a bike and put my foot on a bathroom scale at pedal height. On average pedal I managed to push 35 kg. I then counted how fast you where pedaling here and it 1 rev per second - calculating power with a 200mm long crank gives 439 Watts of mechanical power. Its sad to see that you loose so much when you convert it to AC - but I do like the idea - try going straight from the bike to the treadmill motor with DC or batteries. Inverters suck when it comes to efficiency.

@kaizercharles Reattaching a rear wheel and driving the motor off that would be the easiest mod to that setup. You could even start putting weights in the tire to create a heavier centripetal load on the wheel to smooth out starts and stops and give a cleaner voltage level.
@muddymuddymuddmann Been training, looking for 9 hp (LOL) kidding. I think 200 watts is possible with a better configuration and a higher voltage tolerance GTI or 2 gens in parallel.
Awesome. One does appreciate how much energy is packed into hydrocarbons, and therefore the difficulty of finding something to replace petrol - that is, continuing to live like pigs on some alternative energy source. Petrol is such a great source of energy, without it I don't see how we'll have any choice but to stop living high on the hog.
I wonder if you could charge up capacitors and then drain them off into space heaters. Or use a big fly wheel to create the wattage heating elements need..
Dan! If you still have the rear tire for that bike, remove the factory wheel sproket assembly along with the gear changers... weld or bolt your dynamo to the sproket assembly and replace in the bike.. the different gears will make this a viable product..yeah seriously! This makes more sence than the friction braking that has to be cooled with AC!!!
goverments should Employ homeless and unemployed people to pedal in power factories for some cents per watt and some food and shelter. One could also harness the heat from all those bodies pedalling.
Hadn't thought about scooter motors! I built a pedal power generator using a magnetic bicycle training stand with a 15speed bike to get the gear ratio and an old 12V trolling motor. I ripped apart the resistance magnets on the stand and bolted the friction shaft straight to the trolling motor. With a blocking diode inline I can provide 5amps at 12-14V with casual peddling, 10amps peak, to charge a battery. There is no discernible increase in resistance. It's great! Pedal Power is AWESOME!
@inthepresentraw Vitamix is about 10-15 amps so I think they are 1500 watts. You could never alone successfully direct power that unit. You would need a car battery, charge it for 15 minutes for every 1 minute of usage. Batteries are tricky to tell how much is stored charge and what you just put in. A large capacitor is an option but not really, just short bursts. Buy 5 (7ah) small ups back up lead acid, parallel connection to 1500 peak 2500 inverter. THICK DC WIRING
Ive never understood why people runs on treadmill at ALL! particularly when there is a beautiful day outside or down the beach, go run there. It's because (i feel) they would rather not be seen in public, ashamed of their wieght or body image
@dobberdoss the weather is bad, or they need lower impact work outs, or they need to do some hill climbs, or they want to know there heart rate, or they would like to have a better pace. or they want to be closer to the other machines they work out on. the list is endless nothing to do with body image.
1: yeah every one loves running in a nice heavy jacket because it is 15 degrees out side.
2: closest beach to me is over 50 miles away.
3: they are expensive.
4: you cant choose the incline of nature
5:NOT TRUE!! I got to the gym to run on the treadmill all the time you are wearing less close then you would be outside, people are a lot closer, and there are a ton of mirrors every where. If I was worried about my body image I wouldn't be running in front of a bunch of hot girls.
@dobberdoss Every piece of equipment could be a power plant:-) Not gonna replace power co BUT the gym could be self sustained GRID FREE easy. LED lighting Solar sauna stored heat. SOME treadmills are 15 amps or about 1700 watts. That is just a HUGE WASTE of money. Treadmills in a green gym MAKE NO SENSE.
When you see 10 people running in place at the gym, that is 17 Kilowatts for what????? A 30 minute jog of 10 people = 9 kWh every hour that costs the GYM $2-$3 in electricity
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE the gym i use to go to had some old running machines that had no electric they use to just work by friction inside of them the faster you fan the faster they went and the slower the slower they went no buttons to control the speed just your legs lol
Dan, as a biker, I advise you put the seat higher. Your leg, when extended should be just barely bent. If the seat is low, you risk knee injury, so put the seat up higher. Great video
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Here's a better idea, sell home excercise equipment that dumps energy back into the grid, paying people to work out! Every hour you work out is some cash off your power bill! Now there's an incentive to get in shape!
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE You'd never get off the grid unless it was a huge gym full of patrons and nothing else. Exercise in the dark with no music.. ya know? I've done the math on it before. Even hypothesizing that I've not only got treadmills and bikes going, but also have tied pulleys (like on a universal) and other weight equipment into the power generation. People are feeble and love energy. But, still a good gimmick. Give people a card that records their "green" rating.
This could be combined with Joule Thieves, SEC circuits and such, where lighting is accomplished on tiny amounts of electricity, compared to classic energy-wasters.
Yeah non-science orientated people occasional suggest this sort of thing or even go further and wonder about using animals.... thing is its all terribly polluting and inefficient. Food as a fuel has all the penalties of fossil fuels with near none of the advantages.
Though in a gym it could have merit as there is a lot of work, going to waste. Could peower the lights and Radio etc...
Hey Dan, I have been watching your wonderful videos for a while now. And I love how you share your ideas to the world. Although this is an extremely well thought out idea I wanted to ask you if you knew anything about Zero Point Energy or Radiant Energy and maybe you can shed some light on this suppressed technology? I'm just going out on a limb here and maybe you might refrain from this subject but its worth mentioning to someone who is a great thinker. :)
This is a great video that I wish everyone could see . I watched a video from another u-tuber where a guy asked the video owner to create a bike that would power a house . I laughed and had to leave a comment . Power a Barbie and Ken house ..maybe . At best you could light up 4 x 22 watt luminus bulbs ; for a while . Great video and excellent discussion !! 5***** for sure !
I've had this idea, and although i would have thought you could generate more power with it, it still seems like it's worth a shot for someone to invest in.
Imagine a gym where if you excersized enough you could pay for your monthly fee.. Haha BUM POWER!!!
Looks like this power legs could go a lot faster. I bet with a good chain setup and an inverter that has a higher power tolerance you would but 200 watts easy. I remember the video you guys did last year with the regular inverter your wifey had the same problem over voltaging the unit. I bet a 24v inverter would be a good choice. Place 2 motors in red red black black you can get it.
@hoser4 Did you not hear what he said, it's a grid tie inverter. It's won't do anything if it's not plugged into your house. It doesn't function like a regular inverter does.
may i make a suggestions to your videos. Maybe a lot of people might not agree with me and thats ok i dont mind i just want to make a suggestions based off my opinion. I think you make great videos but my suggestion is that when your filming a video don't cut out the mistakes you make. Everyone makes mistakes but if you say the wrong thing its alright. When you start cutting and splicing a lot of the video it tends to get a little confusing so like i said it is OK to make mistakes : )
Nice job, although your setup needs some more work. You should add a flywheel to stabilise the output (and make the work much easier, as now you constantly speed up/slow down on each stroke). I also think your geneator is not the most efficient one - I've seen a different design which could achieve 150W with almost no effort and 300W in sprint.
If you replace your lights with 20 to 25W CFLs (roughly 100W equivalent incandescent output), you can power up to five lamps -- that's a whole (average-sized) house right there.
Huh? I have a 23W CFL in my living room that provides enough light for the living AND dining room areas. I even have it shining against a white wall to help provide even light.
The trick to CFLs, though, is you need to let them warm up. Since they're a kind of vapor discharge lamps, the mercury gas pressurizes as they warm up, which improves light output (just as a street lamp starts out dim and gets brighter with time). My CFLs warm up in about four minutes.
when i was 6 i told my mom they should build gym equipment that would make electricity to save money, my mom said it wouldnt be a good idea cause it would cost to much to make them... i wish i hadnt listened to her =/
could i use a generic invert if i planned on just powering say my pc or tv in power outtage or can i somehow set it up to charge a battery bank when power goes out?
put these in the prison system, and charge criminala kilojoules to get out of jail, based on the crime committed, it could solve the energy crisis, and give inmates somthing to do to get out faster.
yep but remember E=Mc2 Energy cannot be created out of nothing, so you have to feed those inmates plenty of High Energy foods to produce the energy therefore it equals out
Dan, thanks for posting the video. I'd seen you mention the GTI before and I knew it was different from a regular inverter, but I didn't know how it was different. I hadn't gotten around to looking that up yet. Thanks for the explanation.
Nice Dan. It would be a nice way for the kid to use less energy in the house if they had to generate it to play with it. What would this setup do in to a battery set up keeping it dc then using it as a power source for lights using dc ballast with Florissant tubes?
@SeriousBusiness100 Also transportation and land use policy is different too, they tend to focus more on being able to walk to places & better transit service. While here in North America it's about driving & spreading destinations further out.
HAHAHAHAAA !! Yep you've been working out !! Maybe you should make a generator that you can use with that massive left bicep! HAHAHAHAA You could sell back even more electricity.
Great video Dan! You Da Man !!
One question, If grid power goes out this inverter doesn't work. What good is it if you can't get your generated power in your house when grid power is out? Doesn't make sence, that's when you really need it. Isn't there some sort of relay that can be used or what?

It's because (i feel) they would rather not be seen in public, ashamed of their wieght or body image
dobberdoss 2 years ago 2
@dobberdoss the weather is bad, or they need lower impact work outs, or they need to do some hill climbs, or they want to know there heart rate, or they would like to have a better pace. or they want to be closer to the other machines they work out on. the list is endless nothing to do with body image.
sssssbooom 2 years ago
1: you can run in bad weather
2: the beach is nice and soft
3: heart rate monitors are portable
4: hills exist in nature
5:give me a break, It is ALL to do with body image
6: nothing beats the great outdoors!
dobberdoss 2 years ago
1: yeah every one loves running in a nice heavy jacket because it is 15 degrees out side.
2: closest beach to me is over 50 miles away.
3: they are expensive.
4: you cant choose the incline of nature
5:NOT TRUE!! I got to the gym to run on the treadmill all the time you are wearing less close then you would be outside, people are a lot closer, and there are a ton of mirrors every where. If I was worried about my body image I wouldn't be running in front of a bunch of hot girls.
7: Agreed

I like!, i'm lookin at setting up a gym and THIS would be a great marketing ploy initially
dobberdoss 2 years ago 2
@dobberdoss Every piece of equipment could be a power plant:-) Not gonna replace power co BUT the gym could be self sustained GRID FREE easy. LED lighting Solar sauna stored heat. SOME treadmills are 15 amps or about 1700 watts. That is just a HUGE WASTE of money. Treadmills in a green gym MAKE NO SENSE.
When you see 10 people running in place at the gym, that is 17 Kilowatts for what????? A 30 minute jog of 10 people = 9 kWh every hour that costs the GYM $2-$3 in electricity
GREENPOWERSCIENCE 2 years ago
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE the gym i use to go to had some old running machines that had no electric they use to just work by friction inside of them the faster you fan the faster they went and the slower the slower they went no buttons to control the speed just your legs lol

@GREENPOWERSCIENCE
Dan, as a biker, I advise you put the seat higher. Your leg, when extended should be just barely bent. If the seat is low, you risk knee injury, so put the seat up higher. Great video
seanm1973 1 year ago
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Here's a better idea, sell home excercise equipment that dumps energy back into the grid, paying people to work out! Every hour you work out is some cash off your power bill! Now there's an incentive to get in shape!
jwallbanger 1 year ago
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE You'd never get off the grid unless it was a huge gym full of patrons and nothing else. Exercise in the dark with no music.. ya know? I've done the math on it before. Even hypothesizing that I've not only got treadmills and bikes going, but also have tied pulleys (like on a universal) and other weight equipment into the power generation. People are feeble and love energy. But, still a good gimmick. Give people a card that records their "green" rating.
buzzkillor 1 year ago
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE actually combine that with solar panels and a wind farm, maybe you could go off the grid at least during the day.
buzzkillor 1 year ago
I think a smaller motor with less amp draw would be more realistic, but the concept is great !!!

Very cool. I would definitely be more interested in going to a gym if they offered competitive power generation.

5***** for sure !
jujitsu62 2 years ago

JULYINJULY 2 years ago
How do you set up one connected to the tv? I want my kids to work to watch the idiot box.
1984IcameandIstayed 2 years ago
Plug the TV into the inverter.
hoser4 2 years ago
@hoser4 Did you not hear what he said, it's a grid tie inverter. It's won't do anything if it's not plugged into your house. It doesn't function like a regular inverter does.
sonyxploder 2 years ago
may i make a suggestions to your videos.
Nickk388 2 years ago
Nice job, although your setup needs some more work. You should add a flywheel to stabilise the output (and make the work much easier, as now you constantly speed up/slow down on each stroke). I also think your geneator is not the most efficient one - I've seen a different design which could achieve 150W with almost no effort and 300W in sprint.
templeofthefrog 2 years ago
that enough to power a light bulb, try to light up the whole house. lol
eddy8496 2 years ago
If you replace your lights with 20 to 25W CFLs (roughly 100W equivalent incandescent output), you can power up to five lamps -- that's a whole (average-sized) house right there.
hoser4 2 years ago
@hoser4
true, but most people dont like them because they dont light up enough
eddy8496 2 years ago
My CFLs warm up in about four minutes.

put these in the prison system, and charge criminala kilojoules to get out of jail, based on the crime committed, it could solve the energy crisis, and give inmates somthing to do to get out faster.

yep but remember E=Mc2 Energy cannot be created out of nothing, so you have to feed those inmates plenty of High Energy foods to produce the energy therefore it equals out

Nice Dan. It would be a nice way for the kid to use less energy in the house if they had to generate it to play with it. What would this setup do in to a battery set up keeping it dc then using it as a power source for lights using dc ballast with Florissant tubes?

generally most forms of energy in america is cheaper then European countries, maybe if it was more expensive they wouldn't be using so much :S
SeriousBusiness100 2 years ago 2
@SeriousBusiness100 Also transportation and land use policy is different too, they tend to focus more on being able to walk to places & better transit service. While here in North America it's about driving & spreading destinations further out.
Intransitman 2 years ago
i really like this idea. If only there were a way to utilise and and all of the ranges in speed that your average user would produce though.
Hook something like this to a rowing machine'd be a good idea too.
