I find this clip to be a very light-hearted way of getting an important point across and while the tipping percentage being discussed is about 5% too low, it truly does make the point.
I also think that by making the percentage a bit on the low side, it doesn't cause that much "wallet shock" to the non-tipping listenership; once they get used to 10-15%, 15-20% will follow.
All these people complaining about waiters; I've had bad or indifferent service from waiters like maybe 10 times in my entire life and I'm 56 years old and eat out a lot.

i usually get 10% from black people. when you go out to eat, you should already factor in 20% tip. then if they treat you poorly, you can start deducting money from that. that is the mentality you should have. i think so many people order so much and then once they get the bill say "i don't want to leave any more for my service". that is how we see it.

Wow...i'm shocked. I work at an upscale fondue restaurant and get about 3 or 5 tables a shift. I make 2.13 an hour in texas (as all servers do) and I also have to give 3% of my sales each shift to hosts, bartenders, etc (as all servers do). If I got 10% on a table, I would ask how the service was. I would only get 7% of that but I'd still be taxed on the 15% the government assumes I should be making. Actually 18% is the new standard since we give 3% of that away, so we can leave with 15%

I'm a white person who tends bar in an urban neighborhood. Most of my patrons AND coworkers are black. I might be in the minority here, but I do just fine, typically. In previous jobs, I subscribed to the "black people are bad tippers" mentality; where I am now, I'm finding that is not automatically the case. That might be because I'm awesome at my job - and I've learned not to give poor service to black people. I can spot a poor tipper a mile away - of the black OR white trash variety.

They live off of their tips! If your bill is $60 then your tip should be $12 if everything went ok. If your steak was undercooked IT'S NOT THE SERVER'S FAULT. They do not cook the food. AND btw, MedWell to Well, is not a meat temperature. Just order it well.. and dont bitch when it takes 20 minutes.

Wow...i'm shocked. I work at an upscale fondue restaurant and get about 3 or 5 tables a shift. I make 2.13 an hour in texas (as all servers do) and I also have to give 3% of my sales each shift to hosts, bartenders, etc (as all servers do). If I got 10% on a table, I would ask how the service was. I would only get 7% of that but I'd still be taxed on the 15% the government assumes I should be making. Actually 18% is the new standard since we give 3% of that away, so we can leave with 15%

I'm a white person who tends bar in an urban neighborhood. Most of my patrons AND coworkers are black. I might be in the minority here, but I do just fine, typically. In previous jobs, I subscribed to the "black people are bad tippers" mentality; where I am now, I'm finding that is not automatically the case. That might be because I'm awesome at my job - and I've learned not to give poor service to black people. I can spot a poor tipper a mile away - of the black OR white trash variety.

I hate to say it but the statistics are a sad FACT. The reason I say you feed the stereotype/statistic is because you insist that it's "giving your money away". Although it isn't technically illegal, not tipping is pretty much stealing. If you don't want to be gracious to someone for serving you, go to a drive-thru, or otherwise, man up, and follow the rules of our society.

Tipping is a custom and I only learned to leave a tip recently.
Tipping is NOT a law. I don't have to if I don't want to.
I just feel like an asshole for not doing so because people clown me for not doing so.

If the service is GOOD, tipping is a good thing.
If the service is BAD, leave a penny or nothing.
Always tip the delivery driver because you have no idea how many times we've come close to dying because you didn't want carryout. And don't say 'Get a better job' because that's not something you can do in TODAY's economy. 99% of Delivery drivers make LESS than minimum wage b/c they are considered a 'tipped' employee.

I've had black employees [servers] that BEG me to NOT let black customers sit in their areas b/c they WON'T get tipped. I can count on 1 hand how many black customers I've encountered that shock me by actually tipping.

@Knobotty So I guess it doesn't matter that you as the employer are the morally bankrupt one for not paying your servers a livable wage. Now, you may argue that doing this would increase food prices, but I welcome that. Higher restaurant prices in this economy when it's already expensive to dine out leads to less patronage. This, in turn, means greedy employers are forced to close, and out of the ashes will smarter moral businessmen rise who can pay livable wages and keep prices low.

The truth is the truth no matter how you see it, and the fact of the matter is that the employers make the final decisions as to how much the employees are paid hourly. The customers are logically not responsible for paying proper wages since they are a third party in this economic equation.

I've explained to you the business model that ALL sit-down restuarants operate under; if you wish to insist that all of them are wrong, that's your prerogative; obviously, you are never, ever wrong.
It's also the prerogative of the waitstaff to treat you like shit and for possibly the management from forbidding you to ever come back.
