This is just retarded. Maybe the dog did recognize the duck, but it wouldnt see it as his old friend. Most animals recognize by sound, smell, etc, not by visual that much. Plus towing that duck was just toying to him. Pretty weird stuff to do really.

It wasn't their idea for the dog to want to play with a dead body. Shit, my dogs want to run around following a dog plushie on a stick. Does that mean I'm a monster for letting them chase and eventually catch it? Dogs don't recognize dead bodies that have had all their organs replaced with plastic. It recognizes the shape as a duck, and is chasing it like it were a doll. Learn about animal behaviors and habits before calling others out for recognizing the dog as an actual animal.
