Probably the best version of this ever recorded, remember seeing this a few months after my brother died on jools holland back around 2000 about 2 in the morning while pissed out of my face, remembering that moment still brings tears to eyes to this day.
the verve..... came along a band who unfortunately suffered the pains of the western world but produced music which takes your mind away from the northern hemisphere, mind blowing, truely ecstatic, unbelievably surreal in there attempt to produce atmospheric gaseous which only make you feel part of the psychedelic sounds nick mCcabe produced, even if you were not taking drugs you felt like you had just has a sniff of it! Here come the VERVE!!! Brilliant BAND, Greatest Technology the UK has seen
This song reminds me of my grandma who passed away from lung cancer. Before she was taken to the hospice where she died weeks later, they had her on so many drugs all she could see was her dead husband and merry go rounds. All the things he said he saw when he was on drugs for his brain tumour. Having to see her on so many drugs she hated was horrible. We watched her disinigrate.
that is the best ever live performance I have ever seen.Never heard it played and sung so well, backed with string orchestra.JUST FANTASTIC, result jools holland.ashcroft is a legend!
This song is epiphanic. I still cry when I listen to it, brings back memories from ten years ago, when my mother was dying from cancer and this song translated everything I felt. "The drugs don't work" says it all.
no one knows the real meaning, but many say its about his father dying, Richard Ashcroft said himself it was a tribute to his wife. However dosen't sound very much like a love song.
This song is simply amazing! Richard ashcroft wrote it about his loved one who died..and he took drugs during the death. and At the end of the song he states how he's never coming down no more. This song is so powerful! Long Live Richard Ashcroft! Wigan!
This is clearly such a personal song for him, the emotions of the lyrics are inside of him and he's not "performing" he's really opening his soul. This is an amazing version.
when i was a spotty teenager i just assumed this was about taking drugs, how stupid was i ? now im a little bit older and my dads just passed , now i know what this song is about
So beautiful, I'd not seen this before, and am crying, and i've got to pick my kids up from school! Did Ashcroft write this for his father? made me think of my dear Dad.
It seems like there could've not been a single dry eye in that crowd at the end of that, that is the most emotional and possibly the best rehearsed live performance I've seen. And ya, I love the verve, nothing does it to me like "Slide away", and others, definately an underrated band, but at the same time I'm sure that they becon much respect and attention purely by there catalogue.
True my friend but opinions differ to taste! just because it is original does not make it it the best. Obviously on this occasion that is true due to ashcrofts genious musical ability! the mah certainly knows how to write an unbeatable tune!
my mom died of ovarian cancer in '97. Ever since then I tried to write about how i felt(never successfully). This tune wraps up neatly into one package. Incredible lyrics make me cry...
I heard that it was written for his mom, in '97, which is the year my mom died. My dad 2 years earlier, which I think is when he wrote/performed this song. Great song and performance.
i agree he is awesome, (and that word gets used way too often) but i think ppl like noel gallagher and the great john lennon could give him a run for his money.
I thought about that same thing. John Lennon for sure. Bob Dylan maybe??? Brian Wilson??? Then Noel and Richard? Honestly I put Richard ahead of Noel but truly both are great. I sure hope a US tour is coming.
the verve you mean? i went to see oasis in manchester a couple of years ago. awesome mate really! but i know where you're comin from with ashcroft, he's a real great
Yeah hoping The Verve tour. I saw them on Storm in Heaven tour in a tiny little bar in Minneapolis and it was just unreal. Then I had tickets to a show and they broke like 2 days before the show. Youtube "The Thaw Sessions". It's brilliant.
thats bollocks! he's written a greater number of credible and lasting songs than the others, (with perhaps the exception of lennon) im not saying he's better than them but to say he doesnt come close is just stupid
I'm not saying Albarn is up there with Lennon, even though Damon Albarn is an incredibly talented artist. I'm just saying that Oasis definitely isn't. There's nothing special about them.
Thank you so much for putting this up! It was up awhile back and then it got taken down, and it's honestly one of the most amazing videos of a live performance [in my opinion]. So beautiful... thanks!
This song.. no, this entire album, causes Liam Gallagher to stay awake at night.
