  • I've loved Gene Autry since I was a pre-schooler watching his show on TV back in the '50s. This is probably my favorite Autry song. I'm not generally a fan of C&W, but I've always made an exception for the singing cowboys, especially Gene and Roy Rogers.

  • I may have never new him but i kow we sings the best songs and he is my favorite cowboy we miss you Gene Autry i like this song wil the rest you where a great we all know that your said"I'm not a good actor, a good rider, or a particularly good singer, but they seem to like what I do, so I'll keep on doing it as long as they.but we are glad that you kept singing them songs for us many thanks Mr.Gene Autry

  • Too Bad He or Roy didn't run for president

  • @LES6723 Why would the Kings of The Range want to take a demotion to president? Yours in Old King Cole Slaw.

  • Just great to listen to this song all the time. Brings in happy and innocent memories of the days gone. Life is short!!

  • Does anyone else remember this version?

  • I think that this is the first record that sold a million copies.

  • @Squiggel No Vernon Dalhart's recording of The Prisoner Song was the first one, according to Smithsonian Collection of Classic Country Music (at least hillbilly or country I don't know other genres of music)

Thanks for posting this lovely number.

  • I saw Gene in person when I was 6 years old in 1961.I cried when he died. he was the best!

  • My old neighbor Homer Anagost would cry every time he heard this thinking about his Pops.

  • I love this song. And if I can find a download or a cd somewhere I want to play it at my Daddy's funeral when he passes. He is 85 years old. And my heart will always belong to him. He has been my best friend through good times and bad. klj

  • My Grandpa wanted this song played at his funeral.. I can still see him sitting at the kitchen table singing it to us so we would know what it sounded like! Lord I miss him!

  • My dad passed away 22 years ago today-it's songs like this that make me remember just what I've lost !! Thanks to Gene, I'll never forget!!!

  • I never cared for Gene, but I love him singing this song.

  • I've always loved Gene Autry singing this song, and since my dad passed, it has just grown in sentiment.

  • I loved this video I love ole Gene I am 29 and my Dad is about to be 88 the 1st of march this year. I really due wish I could have known my parents when they where young I wish I would have lived in those days As I would consider myself as a old Soul.... thank you for posting this video where ever you got it from you did uncover a treasure!!!!

  • As I remember it, our division had a record collection of just three 45's. This was one of them. It started me on Country music. That was 1958, Long Beach Naval Ship Yard, USS Bremerton. Thanks a lot.

  • My dad used to play guitar and sing this when I was a kid. He's left this world now. but I think of him when I hear it.

  • Very good, my boys and I do this song. It always brings a tear to my eye. We do the song for my Dad and I guess they will do it for me one day. We sure are losing a lot of good people. Gene was an era I wish we still had.

  • Yes, a great song from Gene.

My late Father died before I was able to give back all his love he gave to me.

This song reminds me of that.

  • I remember my grandfather singing these to me and we'd watch him on the Western movie channel. For Christmas one year I got him a replica of Autry's horse that came with a movie of his. Any of Gene Autry's songs will bring tears to my eyes thinking about my grandfather.

  • Same with me. Being a musician I can appreciate a song that has stood the test of time. A moving piece of music with the words and music working together so perfectly. If you haven't heard simon and garfunkel's live version of this you should. Sounds great. PeteG

  • Just happy to be able to see this old video. Must be a kinescope. Most of them didn't last at all, unfortunately.

  • September 29, Happy Birthday to the late Gene Autry!

  • The first time I heard this song, was the EVERLY BROTHERS version, but to hear this is GREAT.. thanks so much.. Erik Tielman, Fl, US

  • Great voice, awful video, awful audio. Why?????

  • the video is old you idiot cant you just enjoy it without finding fault thankyou to the guy who put it on i enjoyed it myself

  • It's that way because it was not preserved well, these things happen with age.

  • There is something about his singing a song! Once he did it, his version was the best. I loved his songs, he was great!

    Wayne Arthur

  • This is the best tribute that has been made to a father. It shows love, respect and admiration , the way men and boys thought in the early 50's!

  • I watched Gene on TV with my father countless times. This song always got to me. Never moreso than right now. Today would have been his 85th birthday. He passed away the day before Memorial Day this past May.

  • Thank you so much for posting.... It truly is my favorite song and I happen to be a daddy's girl 110%

  • TUSCANERO NIGHTMARES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gene was my 3rd. cousin, his greatgrand father and mine was the same. Tom Autry

  • Gene was a prolific song writer, and a pretty darn good singer.

His acting was pretty bad, lol, but I sure miss his Saturday afternoon matinees, and all his great tunes.

  • Once I saw Pat Butram on a talk show , and he talked about his famous sidekick. he said the critics were always unkind to Gene, they said he could not act, he could not write and he could not sing.........but Pat pointed out, he sure could count. Gene Autry was one of the wealthiest men in Hollywood history. He made plenty as a performer, and a lot more in real estate and broadcasting, and the Angles baseball team.

  • Gene, to me, had a fine voice, could carry a tune well, and could pull off the acting bit OK.

And your surely right, he was a very shrewd businessman, ans made some very wise investments.

Something else too, was that I always heard that Gene was just like you saw him on the screen. He always had time to stop and chat with a fan, or sign an autograph. Just an all around decent gentleman.

  • He was indeed a real gentleman. He was very generous with his wealth also. He owned a huge collection of western art (many originals by Remington & Russell) and donated many to museums. He also quit Republic Pictures in 1942, at age 35 (he was safe from the draft) to join the Army. He then served as flight officer during World War 2 without any special treatment. He flew the dangerous "Hump" from Burma to China. A true American hero on many counts.

  • Gene Autry never sang a bad note. And "Sillver Haired Daddy of Mine" is one of the bittersweetest songs ever written. No one does it like Gene. I sure miss him. Thanks.

  • @pomeroy40144 amen brother!

  • Gene Autry, an American Icon. Was a favorite of my Dad and his brothers..

  • It used to drive me nuts when my father would watch Gene Autry reruns. After a while, I started watching them with him. As his health deteriorated, it became our daily routine. My father passed away the day before Memorial Day. Although it'll never be the same watching Gene without the old man, it will always remind me of my father and the good times we were able to share - this song especially. R.I.P. Pop. R.I.P. Gene.

  • My dad was that silverhaired daddy, as was his dad. and now its me. God bless you Gene Autry, and as Bob Hope would say, "Thanks for the memories."

  • gene autry was my great great uncle

  • I grew up hearing my Daddy sing this song to me and my family. It was always a favorite. Thanks for posting this song,

  • Hank Ballard is a huge fan of Gene Autry.

    He even got his autograph.

  • I know this song only because of my father in law, who passed just yesterday. When ever he would come to visit this is one song I would request he play and sing... Alvin you will be missed, but because you instilled in my sons the love of music you will always be remembered.

  • Reminds of those Saturday afternoons at the neighborhood movie theatre watching Gene, Roy, or Hoppy catch the bad guys. I also remember the Gene Autry radio show on Sunday nights, sponsored by Wrigley's Spearmint chewing gum.
