Zeppo was the best straight man Groucho ever had. The actors they got to play that role in the MGM films (from A Night at the Opera onward) were never as good as Zeppo was playing that same role (especially in Duck Soup).
Supposedly, Zeppo was the funniest Marx brother, but he just came into the group too late to develop his character so he got stuck placing the "straight man".
But, I don't care if he was the funniest man in the world! I still don't like Zeppo.
Because this sounds like Tanner's growl. His sister was not angry, she's better. Kitty told Tanner not to go to a different lion's area. A different lion's name is Robinson Crusoe.
This was made to open "A Night At The Opera" but never used because MGM exec(s) (Probably Louis B. Mayer) felt it would cheapen the trademark. Of course, MGM went on to parody the trademark in several films and cartoons since.
You're right, I've never seen him anywhere else. This was Jackie's era and medium (b/w), but it definitely wasn't Jackie. Maybe they use this guy for trailers only? (This was, after all, a trailer.)

All brilliant, but for Zeppo who rode the coat tails.
But great guys to let him even ride.

Tanner the II

I don't why but when i heard of this, I thought cartoon versions of the brothers would roar at the lion, teasing it.

I've never seen the lion pictured in this logo before. Looks like it was after Slats, but before Tanner. And it definetly doesn't look like Jackie.

Is the 1935 movie A Night at the Opera
kuroro666 5 years ago
Actually, it's from the trailer advertising that film. (I think the "Marx Gratia Marxes" motto was a nice touch!)
meesterfonnyboy 4 years ago
That's just weird. Of course, it's possibly funny, because Harpo's horn replaces the roar.
