This was my first time watching this and I have to say this is a beautiful movie. I love how the deep emotions just sort of flow from it to you. You really get the feeling of regret that the characters felt and it makes you hope that you never have to feel it for yourself. I am definitely telling my English teacher about this because she is a person who would appreciate a great movie like this.

Maybe it's just a difference in the culture, but the American script stirred much more emotion and less weird dialog confusion. Glad other people love this great movie as well!
Thanks so much for posting this! I have had a hard time finding this anywhere since I first saw it when a friend brought the video tape with them from Japan in the eighties - and then I didn't even have subtitles, so really didn't know some of what was going on. What a great film!
Thank you for putting this up. I have never heard or seen this movie before.
But being able to watch something gives me peace in knowing that this Anime exists.
And Though I have heard and Watched Stories that are the same as Windaria's. It still amazes me to see just how imagnative, animated, and Beautiful this movie is.
Again, Thank you. Watching this was very meaningful to me. :)
thank you for uploading this anime .. the last time i saw this anime is when i was 7 years old.. i cannot explain why this anime stayed in my memory for a long time .. i cried when i watch it .
Damn, this is definitely NOT a movie for kids..! At least now I know when and how the depression came into my life! No wonder why some friends who also grew up watching "Windaria" feel the same way... However I love it, it's the most deep and meaningful anime movie I've ever seen. The greek version I watched as a kid had less violent scenes and the dialogues were totally changed! But still it wasn't a movie for kids... Can anyone confirm if the translation from japanese to english is correct?
That ties into another fairytail. Of a mermaid that waited for her lover to come back from the sea (on a ship). He never did, so she sat there waiting until she turned to stone. This was in the pokemon season 1 show with ghastly.
I believe she turned to stone because she finally understood the meaning of sacrifice. We learned earlier that her lover had sacrificed ten years of his life to be the captain of the ghost ship (along with not being able to see a woman) to prove himself to his lover so I understand it to be her way of proving herself to him although of course it means the two of them never being together, but that's the theme to the entire film, lost loves. x
I am one of these people that are still confused with this 'soul keeping'' spaceship. Why did Maria transformed into this soul bird? Was she already dead? And this spaceship was some kind of soul paradise for the dead's soul birds? I never really understood that...
Please understand that this is only my take on the film. Marin was already dead when Izu came to her but she had promised to wait in the village until his return and even death couldn't stop her from fulfilling her promise. She was a ghost when he returned and then once her promise had been kept she was free to join the Ghost Ship as a spirit bird. I always took the Ghost Ship to be heaven, a paradise for souls to spend eternity although the fact that it's a spaceship is a bit confusing.
@princessofitha and sh e is a nice contrast to her lover, even dead she kept her promise and stayed there, unlike izu who satisfied his lust for glory n money n was a little bit late.n the ghost ship is like myth meet s. fiction :Panw its a godlike movie that i had watched 5 years old and had understood half of the meaning of it:Pnow being 20 i m kinda more mature for it ,being a wonderful drama..
I remember watching this movie in english as a little girl. I still can't watch the part where the princess shoots her love and shoots herself with her blood filling the water. That part really disturbed me, I cried the first time I seen it. But this is a pretty movie. It's sad, but pretty.
life is weird... I watched this when I was 7 or 8 years old. I didn't know the name of the movie, but the memory of it stuck with me. now all these years later reading these comments I realize many people share a similar experience. kudos to the artists for creating a masterpiece that can rival ancient greek tragedies.
don't know if u managed to watch the whole last scene yet and if ur an emotional person like me but i sobbed towards the end. sad that he finally realized that he lost and loved her ='[. and also that she kept her promise to him because she really loved him alot.
@ufster81 - yeah, we must be around the same age because i remember from around the same age in my life and never knew what it was, i only remembered the birds and it having a super sad ending. i remember it being one of the first movies i saw that i can remember making me sad and never heard of the movie again before or after that night. this is the first time i figured out what it actually was
the image of the birds also stuck with me for some reason and i was overcome with joy when i stumbled upon this movie years after watching it for the first time.
The ending song is really fitting (lyric) to the whole movie. This is the first time I've seen this and even without part 1 this is still an impressive movie! So glad to have seen this! Thank you so much for uploading Windaria, amyj17uk!
This is the 102min version the other... version.. has a narrator... and I recall alright has also alternate ending... and of course other scenes are altered or cut....

@amyj17uk Hey, thank you so much for putting this on here.. I've been trying to find it forever. I saw it when I was 7, I'm 23 now and could not for the life of me find this movie anywhere. Do you happen to have any idea what the movie is where the young boy is trying to climb up a pipe to a city in the clouds? Eventually his legs get cut off and he has them replaced with artificial ones, he tries to climb the pipe again and dies at the end of the film.
u dislike him...and why? just look around whats going in world...this wasnt movie for kids...but more for adoults....soldiers, goverment should see such movie....just imagine everyone was once small and has dreams and then what become some?....ppl who leads the wars..ppl who kill each other...was it their plan when they were small...i dont dislike him im sorry for him....
thank you so much for uplaoding this.. it's been years since I last saw it and although I had forgotten its name I was still looking for it. I can't believe I still cry every time I watch it.
Thanx for the memories. These were the Days when Anime Music wasn't all poppy and sound the same (even tho i still like it) but this is or has more feeling.
My Fav Classic Anime's and Sndtracks (imo of course)
1. Fist of the North Star
2. Venus Wars
3. Ninja Scroll
4. Windaria (i always cry watching that)
5. Vampire Hunter D
These are old school Classic anime's, man the memories and Music they had.
I watched this movie on Beta Recorder, my dad rented it when I was a child, but I forgot the name... and I waited so many years to watch it again, It's better than I remember it, which makes it more special... Thanks friend for posting it.
I haven't seen this movie since I was about 12 and it was one the first animes I'd ever seen. One of my all time favourites!!! No matter how many times I watched it, I'd always be sobbing by the end, and this was no exception!
This movie was good, sad, but good. The one issue I had was with Izu, I just couldn't help but feel no compassion for the guy at all. Sure his character was probably somewhat realistic. But ARG, I just got so mad at him, killing all those people, leaving marin for that country and its dark dirty ways... I kept waiting for him to just up and die all ready. And he's the one who lives. Of course. Oh well, I don't care if he had a change of heart. He was a jerk. But I loved the movie anyway.
Thanks for uploading this movie. I liked the animations but I didnt care for the story.I guess I like stories with happy endings, too many bad vibes in this storyline.
yeah i noticed that too, but my other question is where di it come from? did this so called banbou own the ship and take it with him, or did he simply become captain of the ship which was already there, and also does it fery the spirits of the Sakians to heaven or simply store them? it also looks modern-ish, i wonder what it's origins are. the airship always confounded me the most of all the stuff in the movie
Pelicula estupenda, un ejemplo de qu eel anime japones es medio de expresion, como la novela o el cine, la obra nos un mensaje, no es solo para divertir, gracias por subirlo.
I saw the crappy English dub/recut when I was a kid, and couldn't remember the title, and it's been bugging me for years... (I looked through Wikipedia's list of all animated films - gah!)
Thanks for uploading! I must say I like this version a lot better.
good movie, but why do the spirits of the dead fly to an airship? that doesnt make sense to me, i guess it's some sort of cosmic irony. the airship is pretty damn cool though, they dont show enough of it. sort of distantly related to the old zeppelins like graf and hindenburg
Apparently, only the spirits of the villagers of Saki occupy it, considering it is mentioned that three months had passed since everyone (except for the villagers of Saki whom safely relocated elsewhere) was killed, and the spirits of the Isans continued to haunt Isa and the spirits of Ahnas and Jill still haunted the Forest of Illusion.
dang this movie is the best man i coulnd help it it was so sad and romantic i just coulndnt help its i eye flodede with tears and the end of the movie it was like th best movie in the world man its just so catchy to your hurt no one coulnd resist to cry by watching this glories movie its stuningly wonderful oh man upload another movie like this its so freaking cool
I've been bustin my a** to find out what this movie was called. All I remembered was that it was good. But after all this years (almost 15) I found it and watched but I just didn't imagine it was this good. What a great movie. Words are useless
sheer stroke of luck finding it so quickly on wiki, recognising the story (i didn't know the name either)and then watching it here!
the weird thing is that it captured me back than even though i only heard the movie - my black and white tv wasn't working that well - it was going through an only black without the white stage :)

Such Tragedy and Beauty this movie has, I just couldn't help but shed some tears, it's very sad what happens in this beautiful piece of art. Life and Death, it's a beautiful and Tragic feeling and subject... Thank you for uploading this, I just broke down into tears after what really happened to Marin, I'll never forget this film and it's beautiful score... thanks...
the first time i saw the anime and it hurts a lot!!! stupid war! the poor villigas! damn Izu he got a nice live and love before war and know a heart full of pain Q_Q so sad.
actually i thought those people died and thats why its called ghost ship..in addition he says im gonna be the captain and we are gonan collect the sould of people that died so...
man, this was one of the classic japanese anime that traumatized my childhood! (like theraphy trauma!) thanks for putting it here. im all tearish!!! that izu is a total jerk!! im all U_U right now...
Wow. I remember seeing this when I was 8 in English. It really messed me up. This is my number one top favourite movie of all time. I could care less if it were animated or not! Thanks for uploading this! Subbed taboot! And FINALLY translations for Utsukushi Hoshi! I've been looking for translations everywhere for this song. I would have downloaded it from the bittorent myself but my computer would die of slowdom. Thank you!
I saw this in 1992, I think it was the English version because the name Alan sounds more familiar. I was waiting for something more, but I think even then I felt there were so many unsaid things. Japanese films tend to be like that - always suggest, but don't say.
I remember watching Windaria so very long ago and this scene made me cry buckets! I have never forgotten this movie because of the tragic end. Thanks for uploading!
Okay, that seriously just made me sob straight through this last segment. Izu was right there on the cliff, why didn't just let himself fall? I swore that's what he meant when he said I'll never leave you again. And so what, if he becomes the captain for all enernity, does that mean he dies anyway, or will he still be human? Then what about Druid? After the 1/2 year, does that mean the old captain and her will be together as passengers? I'm so sad and so confused...
From what I understand (SPOILER ALERT), there was a narration added at the end which implied that Izu (Alan in the edited version) vowed to atone for his sins in order to be with his wife again--the ending of the narration makes it sound as though he did. Of course we don't know if that happens or not in the original version (I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't, given that he was, after all, responsible for killing so many people and betraying his wife).
Thankyou once again for uploading, it was fantastic to see this again, the japanese original no less. I agree, I can't help feeling bad for Izu, even though he caused his own grief, the fool!
I agree with the subsequent reviewers. I thought it served Izu right for not going back for his wife when he had the chance during the battle and carrying out the genocide of Itha and its people. Would Ahnas still had carried out her lovers suicide had she known she was the last . . .?
ok.....saddest movie ever....

Maybe……Japanese legend is in this story.
Isa is "Umisachihiko"(海幸彦).
Paro is "Yamasachihiko"(山幸彦).
Druid is "Matsura-Sayohime"(松浦佐用姫).

I know, I know, but I watched this movie for first time when I was like 10 or 11...
It's socking and has some very deep emotions. I'm not blaming America for destroying everything... (at least not everything)
But you always place the emotion for that "god bless America" and so on...
In two words this anime wants you to learn not to act on first though and that regret can be a
very heavy emotion to bare with.
Getting all that emotion out is like a fight scenes anime, an empty husk

@amyj17uk Hey, thank you so much for putting this on here.. I've been trying to find it forever. I saw it when I was 7, I'm 23 now and could not for the life of me find this movie anywhere. Do you happen to have any idea what the movie is where the young boy is trying to climb up a pipe to a city in the clouds? Eventually his legs get cut off and he has them replaced with artificial ones, he tries to climb the pipe again and dies at the end of the film.

I owe you one BIG time, buddy!!
I haven't seen this movie since I was about 12 and it was one the first animes I'd ever seen. One of my all time favourites!!! No matter how many times I watched it, I'd always be sobbing by the end, and this was no exception!
Thank you so much for posting this! You rock!

But I loved the movie anyway.

notice that the english version and the japanese version has a totally different meaning.

yeah i noticed that too, but my other question is where di it come from? did this so called banbou own the ship and take it with him, or did he simply become captain of the ship which was already there, and also does it fery the spirits of the Sakians to heaven or simply store them? it also looks modern-ish, i wonder what it's origins are. the airship always confounded me the most of all the stuff in the movie

Oh Shit man, i couldn't help but break down crying at the end

Pelicula estupenda, un ejemplo de qu eel anime japones es medio de expresion, como la novela o el cine, la obra nos un mensaje, no es solo para divertir, gracias por subirlo.

I saw the crappy English dub/recut when I was a kid, and couldn't remember the title, and it's been bugging me for years... (I looked through Wikipedia's list of all animated films - gah!)
Thanks for uploading! I must say I like this version a lot better.

good movie, but why do the spirits of the dead fly to an airship? that doesnt make sense to me, i guess it's some sort of cosmic irony. the airship is pretty damn cool though, they dont show enough of it. sort of distantly related to the old zeppelins like graf and hindenburg
steamboy51 4 years ago
Apparently, only the spirits of the villagers of Saki occupy it, considering it is mentioned that three months had passed since everyone (except for the villagers of Saki whom safely relocated elsewhere) was killed, and the spirits of the Isans continued to haunt Isa and the spirits of Ahnas and Jill still haunted the Forest of Illusion.

yeah, 1993, winter, on Romanian Television!
sheer stroke of luck finding it so quickly on wiki, recognising the story (i didn't know the name either)and then watching it here!
the weird thing is that it captured me back than even though i only heard the movie - my black and white tv wasn't working that well - it was going through an only black without the white stage :)
dar cine ''dubla''? cum să nu-ţi rămână pe creier? :)

I saw this a long time ago in English...so, I can't really remember it well but I could have sworn it ended differently...
MeltTheWorld 5 years ago

NyneCrow 5 years ago
Even though Izu is an ass AND deserved all those things, i kind of feel bad for him. Poor thing.
itachisusagi 5 years ago
I agree with the subsequent reviewers. I thought it served Izu right for not going back for his wife when he had the chance during the battle and carrying out the genocide of Itha and its people. Would Ahnas still had carried out her lovers suicide had she known she was the last . . .?
Jal8919536 5 years ago
