In fact, the Tanon Strait is officially declared a Protected Seascape by Presidential Declaration 1234, with commerical fishing banned, but it is very poorly enforced. Also, the killing or eating of dolphins is banned. Practically, these animals are much more valuable to the Philippines as tourism magnets than as food.
That kind of fishing (large commercial) when improperly regulated, as it basically is in the Philippines, leads to massive overfishing and is a major reason that the fish catch in the Philippines has been declining for decades. Obviously that hurts not only the commercial industry itself, but more problematically, the marginal fisherfolk.
When I was about 10, 12?; I used to go with a purse seine (fishing fleet)[my aunts owned the only one in our town Tuburan at that time]The fleet is crewed by about 50 and more persons.
I've seen that countless times trying to outrun our boats. we used that as our food in the sea sometimes (some kind of beefy taste) They're considered as nuisance before, in the 60's. I don't know now
