That said, melanin has its benefits and costs. And the production of melanin in the skin distracts the body from other tasks and comes with a metabolic cost, so whites evolved not to use melanin - vitamin D is absorbed better instead!

Pale skin is not an "adaptation" to less "exposure" to the sun. It's a genetic condition whereby melanocytes produce less melanin. You fail to understand the ability of Africans (and others) to ALSO produce pale skinned offspring whose melanocytes create a deficient amount of melanin to protect against the sun.
Very dark people generally aren't burned by natural sunlight, nor do they die of skin cancer at anywhere near the rates of pale people. Don't fool yourself.

The cause for white skin is fairly well understood to be a combination between vitamin-D rich diets in Europe, less UVA/B exposure, preferential breeding (most men still choose lighter skinned women...), and advantageous survival benefits in the snow.

Anyone with half a brain knows that lighter colours are recessive, but that doesn't make any race superior. Dominant genes could be hiding recessive genes, which when paired with other recessive genes can result in black people with blue eyes, etc. And dominant genes are mutations too.
