  • seems a lot like Forbidden Planet

  • Isn't this like a rip-off of Avatar? Oh, no, wait...

  • @jtinalexandria brother the sad part is, i watched this with my nephew and he said same thing, even after i explained to him how this film predates avatar by more than two decades, he still was arguing about it beeing Avatar ripoff

  • Where is part 3?

Asked by others, but not answered...

    Thank you

  • I first watched this when I was 5 years old. & I got to say that it has had a lasting effect on me to this day!

  • @Yujifanik used to watch it 2 times a day when i was 5, my mom would skip to the calming parts with soothing music when i was sleepy, during the day i would watch it whole. today when i want to relax i listen to songs of gandahar, i still sleep to them now as an adult

  • James Cameron, run! They'll sue you! :D

  • So does any one in this movie world ever say: "Hey buddy, eyes up!"

  • oh yes more... I need to finish my masturbation...... moar

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I have not seen this in years!! You truly know animation!!

  • Seriously if I had to devote myself to anything its getting this remade!

No. Not as a cgi movie, not as a cheap B-movie, not mdoernized or cheapened to todays standards(well maybe in some ways)!

  • I knew Glenn Close was in this. Totally missed Penn & Teller. Wonder what they have to say about this now?

  • Between Fantastic Planet, Light Years, and Avatar, I think we've had our fill of naked blue aliens.

I think the next animated movie about an alien planet should use red aliens, who wear lots of clothing, you know, just to mix things up a bit.

  • @andrew32155

    Half-nude purple aliens. There. :3

  • @andrew32155 yes let them ear tie dye shirts

  • TIME TO DRINK SOME MUSHROOM TEA WAIT 20 MIN AND WATCH THIS MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME HOPE ITS AS GOOD AS WIZARDS TRIPPING BALLS

  • Great movie.

  • You can grasp the whole if you want. I will strive to grasp the good!

  • @andrewniles1 that's kind of what the beginning warns us of, that if you only grasp the good you will not understand the evil and you will not survive it when it comes.. Reminds me of self defense training, if all you know is "good" then you won't be prepared to defend yourself from "evil".... if we're even talking about the same thing...

  • @fuzzwahmrp i know evil too well already!

  • just watched this on vhs with some of my freinds.. wow.. its such a crazy trippy sexy movie, it was great

  • what a shame! the author credited is Jean Pierre Androvan!! His name is Andrevon! french novelist. lol how is this possible?

  • 6:22 pretty accurate depiction of my member...be jealous...

  • Who wants Criterion to release this on DVD and Blu-Ray with both versions?

  • i was so scared when i was a kid after watching this

  • so this has come out on dvd in europe but not "region 1"

i saw it long ago on VHS and untl now i didnt understand why netflix claims no knowledge of it

although they do have fantastic planet

  • holy crap, Penn and Teller are in this?!

  • @turtlewings yea there seems to be quite a star studded list going on here and i'v never heard of this movie before.

  • 6:22 stone penis?

  • I want to watch this but not in 360p

  • I haven't seen this in years!

  • Amazing, 20 years after Fantastic Planet, the only thing the director could do to improve his qualities, was increase his frame rate from 10-15 FPS to 24 FPS.

  • @NeuroManson Fantastic Planet was animated in Czechoslovakia.

Gandahar was animated in North Korea. :)

  • What was will be in Gandahar ty for sharing I have been looking for this a long time to show my son.

  • what does "gandahar" mean anyway?

  • @pipefox19 thats the name of their world.

  • @i39darkblade i know thats not what i ment ...i'm asking about its meaninig like my name for example means:"belonging to kendal (the dell of the river kent)." its english. celtic.

  • come back alive, cause your mommy and your naked aunty council told you so.

  • It scared hell out of me when I was 6 or somethinh ;]

  • Only the council of the bare breasted women may rule over us!

Also, one fat guy on a planet full of vegetarians? Someone check to see if any children are missing.

  • @patchesdf the most unhealthy foods are generally made from vegetable matter (pastries , sugar etc).

  • This is fantastic, though missing parts 3 and 6 :(

  • Edited version is edited.

  • Bless the directors that have the guts to pour out acid animations like this to fuck with your childhood.

  • i remember trippin balls to this when i was 16. 22 years ago now. awesome art & story.

arg i turn 38 this month...

  • i remember trippin balls to this when i was 16. 22 years ago now. awesome art & story.

  • When I was 6 years old, my mom got me this movie at the library, I was seriously scarred for life. ALWAYS have I wondered what movie it was. I am now 20 years old and I am seeing how awesome it truly is

  • Adult Swim needs to show this.

  • Gabriel Yared made the music!

  • OLD FAV!

  • hahahaha im high, this shit is tripped as. whats with that fetus big and that chick?

  • I was will be watching this!

  • So many utopian ideas and warnings!!

I watched this when I was 10 and only now I realize the impact and influence it had in me. thank you, this is great

  • @heldersantos77

Does this movie remind you of Avatar by James Cameron? James Cameron is a huge fan of animation, anime, adult animation, Sci-fi/fantasy and Euro-animation and this is one of his faves as well as Fantastic Planet as he used some of them as influences. He definitely combined Dances with Wolves and Gandahar and Fantastic Planet in one movie.

  • @Johnlindsey289 You're wright :) Yesterday I saw Masters of Time, also a nice one. But I have to check Dances with Wolves (I've never heard of). ty for the tip

  • @heldersantos77

There are similarities between this movie and Avatar, noticed that? Cameron is a fan of this movie and Fantastic Planet and also used some elements

  • @Johnlindsey289 Absolutely, the blue natives, the forest, the psychic colective power, the contrast between nature symbiosis and mechanical warfare.

  • @heldersantos77

Cameron also used Heavy Metal, Nausicaa, Castle in The Sky: Laputa, Princess Mononoke, Dune, Star Wars, Total Recall and Willow in Avatar as well, noticed that too?

  • Omega's a pretty preachy guy...

  • Fascinating. Instead of traveling to the past to save the future, he travels to the future to save the past. Penn and Teller voiced parts of this? Far out.

  • Fascinating. Instead of traveling to the past to save the future, he travels to the future to save the past.

  • OMG at last found it !!!!! Watched this as a little kid, had this movie at the back of my head for all those years, thanks for uploading!

  • 1:29 so THATS how babies are born...my parents lied to me...

  • @Remedy13 you see how much you can learn from youtube :D

  • @Remedy13

Funny how your comment is from 9 MONTHS ago. XD

  • where the fuck is part 3?

  • @rsmothersjr FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, Where the fuck is part 3????

  • @736NVAN9EL: very bad quality but it's here: Light Years or Gandahar 3 of 8

  • @rsmothersjr Light Years or Gandahar 3 of 8

  • I remember seeing this when i was 6.. left quite an impression, very inspiring

  • @mythnow DOn't become defensive of zdragon Ball Z,. What Jacol is saying is that this film as well as the other rene tharoux pieces speak on the human consciousness. I makes statements and asks questions pertaining to the human spirit, psyche and being. What are we doing? Where do we come from?

Dragon ball is an orgy of violence.. It can be considered a type of art as in it takes skill to draw, but does it contribute to the questions of great mystery throughout or short lives?

  • I haven't seen this movie sine the late 80s, looking forward to seeing it again!

  • this kinda looks like it's based on some works by Caza, or am I mistaken?

  • @Stretchypantsmaster Yes it is, from one of the best french science fiction artist ;)

  • @snekx Caza+Asimov= my dad is made ^^ this is so incredibly awesome. Thanks!

  • I remember seeing this on video tape years ago. As a teen I thought it was too slow but now I can appreciate it.

  • I rented this movie years ago because Isaac Asimov was on the title box. I watched it all by myself. Completely sober. It is one of the weirdest films I've ever seen. And Isaac Asimov had very little to do with it.

  • I rented this movie years ago because Isaac Asimov was on the title box. I watched it all by myself. Completely sober. It is one of the weirdest films I've ever seen.

  • This has Rob Livfelt written all over it. >_<

  • Oh wow, I loved Fantastic Planet and It looks like this is going to be good too

  • Criterion needs to bring this animated cult classic on Blu-Ray and DVD!

  • i found La Planète Sauvage of Rene Laloux by chance, and i was like wtf! this is really good, and now i'm addicted to his films xD

  • If you like this kind of animation watch Fantastic Planet, i highly recommend it.

  • @stetik yeah Fantastic Planet was really a fucking amazing story!

  • imagine being one of only a few males on a planet full of beautiful alien females like this :))))) id like that

  • Thanks for uploading this, I have been looking for this film for years!! As a kid I couldn't even watdh this... I remember that my sister's ex-husband made us a tape of Bruce Springsteen videos and this was at the very very end, he put that in there.

  • this is such a hidden gem - rumor has it the book will be translated in english in the next couple years once can only hope.

  • nie wiem co brał twórca tego filmu ale musiał to być mocny towar....

  • Now this is what i call a great movie! I loved it back in 92 at age 10 as i rented it from one of local movie stores here in Albuquerque and loved it since i always been a Sci-fi junkie. I saw tits, some bloody violence and all that as i bought this movie in the K-mart bargain bin, awesome movie that is pure art. I was into adult cartoons since 11 watchin Heavy Metal, Vampire Hunter D, American Pop, Rock & Rule and more on TBS as i even watched Wizards, Fire and Ice and Akira at 13.

  • Tell me why the protagonist looks human while everyone else is some kind of elf thing.

  • I don't understand what is this thing. The movie's name is Gandahar. Why do we have another title. Is this the anglo-saxon version of Gandahar ? But the names of the staff are not good?

  • Wow. Don't know how I missed this one! Especially with such an all-star English voice cast!

  • starts with a quote from my favorite sci fi author of all time..

    this is gonna be good.

  • Gandahar, Az Ido Urai (Les Maitres du Temps), Fantastic Planet ... all are marvels

  • Bleh... I expected the original version.

  • amoviefrommychilhood,greatmomentandsomuchspychedilicIcantspacewords

  • Dragonball isn't a "shooting movie" , it's an action anime series.

It's stupid to want to compare stuff like this with Dragonball or anything else anyway, especially stuff like Dragonball because they are so obviously very different concepts...art...ect. I may not like the creator of Dragonball's "style" but it's still art to the creator and his fans. Oh, I don't consider myself a huge fan of dragonball yet I watched it anyway and "methapsique" isn't even a real word.

  • THE ORIGINAL AVATAR!

  • @pairostrike

Most agree man, i believe Cameron is a fan of Lenox's work as much as to Japanimation.

  • Great movie for trippin. If im not mistaken its based on a book by Isaac Asimov?

  • oh wow awesome. When was this made?

  • awesomeness.

  • Thanks for putting this on YouTube. I haven't seen this movie in a long, long time!

  • Pretty good animation to be North Korean!

  • @SMGJohn It isn't ! This movie is French.

  • @SMGJohn ?????? This is French,dude...

  • @BEL79NUN No actually it's North Korean and French cooperation work

  • @SMGJohn Oh,yeah, didn't they do the same thing with Fantastic Planet?

I didn't know they did it with this movie.

  • @BEL79NUN yes it is :) from andrevon's book

  • I saw this when I was a kid, ive been trying forever to figure out what it was called!

  • whole lotta tits in this flick

  • The people in the beginning aren't the only ones in this movie who got stoned...

  • looks way better than fantastic planet already. that movie was just, surreal and boring in a way. definitly a one time watch.

  • this is normal, the United States still believe that having the right to fuck the shit in the works, while the music is an integral part of the work.

As for the March of the Penguins, they removed the bo Yet already in English due to Emilie Simon.

    This should be banned.

  • Anyone thinks this movie is similar to Heavy Metal?

  • @Johnlindsey289

Certainly - but Taarna still rocks. ;-)

  • All I Can Say is Wow

  • i have never seen so many breasts in all my cartoon life!!!

  • this totally reminds me of neverending story for some reason

  • it's foggy night in my city, just perfect for watching this cartoon.

  • It's not a cartoon

  • huh, blue alien natives on an alien planet who are confronted with a more advanced civilization... sounds like dancing with wolves, but instead of native americans, its blue aliens...huh, i guess no one will EVER pass off blue alien natives as their own and get credited for being original...

  • Well, in the end, it turns out they're not being attacked by a more advanced civilization, but a giant moist brain from the future. Slightly different plot, I think.

  • cool they seem almost like native americans, some kind of aboriginal people.

  • Ahhhh Gandahar ... the only regret I have is that the original soundtrack is completely different from the French one ! Such a shame ... The French OST is much better I think. Less "kitch".

  • hmm... brings back memories. thx for posting. think i originally saw this on Night Flight.....along with Fantastic Planet.

  • Night Flight was my shit also saw these on there!

  • hmm...in ancient minoan civilization the topless dress was fairly common.

  • I saw this film when it first came out.

I remember to many people saying it didn't make sense and stuff like that. I remember looking at them and wondering if they could see past their own supper plate.

Excellent post and thanks for sharing.

I guess I'm going to have to watch it now that I've found it here. :)

  • i think this is the movie ive been looking for all i can remember is i saw some cartoon film and this blue guy was floating in a pink bubble or something so im hoping this is it

  • you may be looking for fantastic planet/planete sauvage

  • nothing more depressing than extinct pop philosophy. Maybe irrelevant science fiction.

  • boobs.

  • Read deeply what Asimov wrote in Prologue, and Enjoy the trip in the Laloux concept, its incredible for me and many people, Today we dont have movies like this!!

  • Great MOVIE, Gandahar is Very deep methapsique movie, shows a humanity beings, totall incredible, its not a funny shity shooting movie for kids like Dragonball, ITS REAL ART!!!!!

  • @Jacol23 Do not offend DB.Maybe its not your fault,i know that many people cant see the message its holds but thats why you do not judge the book by its cover!

Than again i must agree with you that this movie is a Real Art,and holds a great meaning ,and reveals a good truth about humans.

  • @Jacol23 well actually this animation is not meant for kids

  • @Jacol23 define "real art"

and dragonball was anime, just another art form the japanese use. dont talk shit if u dont consider it "real art"

  • @Jacol23 AMEN!

  • 1:47 - I wonder...is the actual 'Nerf Herding?'

3:10 Glenn Close? Penn & Teller? Bridget Fonda? Why haven't we all already heard of this?

    4:27 AHHHH SHIT WAAHH AAAAHHH

7:24 OH OH AHH JESUS CHRIST FUCKING HELL WHAT IS THAT THING

  • man, i wish i was watching this with you

  • lol, your comment made this video so funny...

  • @nickringer lol

  • @nickringer

    best comment ever, dude!

  • @nickringer Glenn Close? Penn & Teller? Bridget Fonda? Why haven't we all already heard of this?

Didn't you know? Nothing fucking happened in our world prior to 1985. Generation Y is really tech savvy but they haven't been adequately exposed to the cool shit from the prior 2 generations. That's why Gen X needs to get off its collective ass, learn computer skills and upload more of this stuff to enrich this creatively bankrupt new millenium. Lol.

  • @nickringer gosh, what an awfull lot of lovely creatures :D

  • I'll never shoot a bird again.

  • i hope you ate the ones you shot

  • Wow, when and where did this come out? This looks old. I remember seeing a video cover called light years at the video stores when I was a kid, but never got to see because we didn't have a vcr at the time. I'm 33 now.

  • This movie had some big names doing the voice work. I wonder if they are in the credits?

  • Ah, yes, the topless wise council of women.

  • I remember renting this movie a LONG time ago...you definitely won't see stuff like this in your rental stores these days!

  • Trippy.O.o

  • good movie.

  • I remember seeing this when I was a kid and it freaked the shit out of me. I knew the movie existed, but I couldn't remember the name. Thank you, You Tube!

  • WTF! this sh** is weird, i might have to watch this

  • Meh.

    "Fantastic Planet" is better.

  • haha is this ELP on the soundtrack??

  • yo whats ELP? am i dumb for thinking that's Emerson Lake and Palmer..

  • el-p is a white producer/rapper from NYC which cereal i think was joking about from the comment from bohemund he had an album called fantastic damage but cereal was confused there is a movie like this called fantastic planet

  • haha i was talking about emerson lake and palmer (elp), cause the soundtrack on Gandahar totally is a rip off of their style. but yes fantastic planet is extremely similar to this flick in a lot of ways. but i actually prefer fp to this one.

  • Original music: Gabriel Yared

American Version: Jack Maeby, Rob Jewett, Gabriel Yared.
