Her clarity and technical prowess is unmatched. I ADORE Natalie Dessay. Nobody is better in this role than her... as a performer. But let's face it, if all you have to say is that Jo is too technical, then you are forcing yourself to not enjoy what is one of the clearest most amazing voices in all eternity. It's like saying that a tennis player was too perfect in their destruction of their opponent. Isn't that the point? Perfection. And Jo has achieved that here.

You could NEVER compare Sumi to Dessay and Joan and Callas because the way they sing is totally different. Sumi has a clearer tone, and Joan has a warmer, richer one, Dessay of course is very nasal, and her acting is unmatched compared to modern-day coloratura sopranos, and Callas is more of an opera-singing actress than an opera singer.

@Drelnis Yes, they are very different. But - to Callas - she was not only opera-singing actress. Opera-singing actress is Dessay.

We usually don't see Callas, but listen to her Music, which is so full of emotions. She invented a special method of singing: she collected all informations in music and in words and after all sang it very carefully, very intellectually. Alas! This method wasn't caught by any one singer after her.

To Sumi - I think, she is the best coloratura nowadays.

It is true that she doesn't convey as much feelings and emotion as we would want from her singing, but I, for one, cannot deny or refuse to adore her perfect coloratura, I mean, Carnaval de Venise and O Zittre Nicht, 2 arias alone could stand for who she really is as a singer, there's no other voice with such perfect and crystal clear timing.

sorry, i experienced some problems with my connection. anyway, I wanted to say that no one will probably ever be able to arrive where callas arrived, but sumi jo 's fine. nice voice, good technique, inexistent acting. but no one acts nowadays. at least she has a decent italian.

no, actually, I did non mean anything personal against any singer, it is just that everytime I go to see an opera here in prague it is impossible to recognize the libretto (except for one or two singers). as for the acting, which I miss a lot nowadays, I love callas' full and emotional voice, I cannot do anything about it.

Of course I appreciate Sutherland and Sumi Jo and others and I am not saying that their voice is ugly, not at all, it is bautiful. Flawless technique, flawless voice. but it just does not give me such emotion as when I hear a callas registration or watch some footage.

In a video clip which you can find here on Youtube, Natalie Dessay, when being interviewed, has claimed that she likes Callas as an actress and Sutherland as a singer. So you're probably right, acting does add up profuse emotion for opera. Cheers !!!

well, so is natalie dessay I suppose. one does not have to be a singer to make an opinion and this one cited above is mine. it is not my problem if you are not comfortable with it. do not use term such as shut up with me. I prefer emotion to a flawless voice, and however, callas did have an amazing tecnique. that is not a reason to despise other singers or their admirers.
