Her clarity and technical prowess is unmatched. I ADORE Natalie Dessay. Nobody is better in this role than her... as a performer. But let's face it, if all you have to say is that Jo is too technical, then you are forcing yourself to not enjoy what is one of the clearest most amazing voices in all eternity. It's like saying that a tennis player was too perfect in their destruction of their opponent. Isn't that the point? Perfection. And Jo has achieved that here.
Sumi Jo's "The Night of Bel Canto" Seoul, South Korea, July 7th, 1997. She sings 4 arias. Those are. 1. Rossini - Il Barbiere di Siviglia - osina - Una Voce Poco Fa 2. Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor - Lucia - Mad Scene (Il dolce suono) 3. Bellini - La Sonnambula - Amina - Care Compagne.Sopra il sen.. 4. Verdi - La Traviata - Violetta - Estrano.. Ah, Fors'e lui. Sempre Libera Tags: Sumi Jo Donizetti Lucia ermoor Mad Scene coloratura opera aria bel canto soprano
This is an amazing performance - beautiful singing combined with great acting! Does anyone know if a DVD or CD of this performance is available - the other arias from it are also stunning (i.e. La Traviata).
if you meant language wise, it's because there are a ton of sounds not found in Korean that singers have to sing.....it's mad hard to be korean and a singer of foreign languages....I myself am not korean but know many korean opera singers.
I was appropriately creeped out. I knew Sumi Jo could sing her face off but her acting and the staging in this performance made me believe she was truly crazy.
when i think of sumi , i really dont think of acting. her voice is the diamond. honestly i dont think her acting is that good. i frigen luv sumi but im not affraid to be honest.
Could someone please give me a translation of this song? I've always enjoyed it, but I have only been able to get the first part-I believe the first part ends with "I have escaped your enemies"? Please correct me if I am wrong, and thank you to those who take the time to read my request. Thank you and don't stop loving beautiful music like this.
The sweet sound, hits me, his voice! Ah, that voice into my heart decends! Edgardo, I surrender to you A chill creeps into my breast! trembles every fiber! falters my foot! Near the fountain next to me sit a while! Alas! arises a tremendous phantom and separates us! Here let us take refuge, by the foot of the alter. Strewn is it with roses! A harmony celestial, do you not hear? Ah, the marrige hymn plays!
Oh, joy that one feels and does not speak of! The incense burns! Brilliant the sacred torches, shining all around! Here is the minister! Give me your right hand! Oh, joyous day! At last, I am your, at last you are mine, to me you have been given by God. Every pleasure is more grateful, It is to me, with you, sweeter From peaceful heaven a smile life to us will be. I think this is the right translation but my italian is not perfect...I hope you enjoy it!
@raindropsneverfall you obviously have no idea. Go watch other Inva Mula videos, before you talk crap. What do you know about real singers? I mean having Britney Spears in your favorites says it all... GTFO
@raindropsneverfall lmao @ you telling me to grow up with all the britney spears and lady gaga videos in your favorites... the fuck you foolin, idiot? LMFAO!!!
You could NEVER compare Sumi to Dessay and Joan and Callas because the way they sing is totally different. Sumi has a clearer tone, and Joan has a warmer, richer one, Dessay of course is very nasal, and her acting is unmatched compared to modern-day coloratura sopranos, and Callas is more of an opera-singing actress than an opera singer.
@Drelnis Yes, they are very different. But - to Callas - she was not only opera-singing actress. Opera-singing actress is Dessay.
We usually don't see Callas, but listen to her Music, which is so full of emotions. She invented a special method of singing: she collected all informations in music and in words and after all sang it very carefully, very intellectually. Alas! This method wasn't caught by any one singer after her.
To Sumi - I think, she is the best coloratura nowadays.
It is true that she doesn't convey as much feelings and emotion as we would want from her singing, but I, for one, cannot deny or refuse to adore her perfect coloratura, I mean, Carnaval de Venise and O Zittre Nicht, 2 arias alone could stand for who she really is as a singer, there's no other voice with such perfect and crystal clear timing.
sorry, i experienced some problems with my connection. anyway, I wanted to say that no one will probably ever be able to arrive where callas arrived, but sumi jo 's fine. nice voice, good technique, inexistent acting. but no one acts nowadays. at least she has a decent italian.
no, actually, I did non mean anything personal against any singer, it is just that everytime I go to see an opera here in prague it is impossible to recognize the libretto (except for one or two singers). as for the acting, which I miss a lot nowadays, I love callas' full and emotional voice, I cannot do anything about it.
Of course I appreciate Sutherland and Sumi Jo and others and I am not saying that their voice is ugly, not at all, it is bautiful. Flawless technique, flawless voice. but it just does not give me such emotion as when I hear a callas registration or watch some footage.
In a video clip which you can find here on Youtube, Natalie Dessay, when being interviewed, has claimed that she likes Callas as an actress and Sutherland as a singer. So you're probably right, acting does add up profuse emotion for opera. Cheers !!!
well, so is natalie dessay I suppose. one does not have to be a singer to make an opinion and this one cited above is mine. it is not my problem if you are not comfortable with it. do not use term such as shut up with me. I prefer emotion to a flawless voice, and however, callas did have an amazing tecnique. that is not a reason to despise other singers or their admirers.
Just perfect... It is not a question of admire anyone, it´s just an objective observance. Callas is Callas and Sumi is Sumi. And Domigo is Domingo. There are good and bad momens for each one. why compare them. This lady is an Angel, lets forget other sopranos, at least for a sec and enjoy.
And since art was created back in the caveman days along came the critic and ever since we have listen to his opinion. Those who can do and those who can't critisize
so what, she's been dead for eons! Sumi is great singer on her own right, i think, although i wish that she had some more texture to her voice that gives distinction from her high pitch to her lower one. like low notes don't sound low in her singing and thats my bggest problem with her

I thought all opera had vibrato throughout the note...maybe I just can't hear the distinction coming from jazz/pop ^^;

TO much vibrato use less only to show expression let it gradually grow not immediatley on the note.
