  • I disagree with his view. the change came in Europe, over years as a result of the struggle of the christian moral value, against the church/state control design that they were oppressed by, which was a continuation from ancient control of previous civilizations. science in the time he mentioned as the modern invention was created by a group of families and the creation of evolution, that was based on fraudulent drawings and theories with no credibility.Globalization is just a new package.

  • Dr. Macfarlane, thank you very much for posting these, they answer many of my burning questions. I have been a layman in the field of sociology for many years as the subject is of great personal interest to me. These lectures will make for perfect evening viewing leading up to the start of my degree next month. If you're ever in Oxford giving a talk, I'd very much like to attend!

  • Good God! The Industrial Revolution is the beginning of capitalism's rape of the Earth.

  • I love your stuff. Your explanation of Marx has been circulated around my fellow undergraduates here at University of Leicester. And your insights into Japan are so very interesting! Thanks Alan

  • 05:13 - When Dr. Macfarlane announces his email address there is an army of pens and paper being shuffled. Sounds like leaves being blown in the wind.

  • First I would like to thank Dr. Macfarlane for the opportunity to 'attend' his lectures via the web. As an anthropology student in Vienna, Austria who is writing my thesis and always gathering more information in an effort to understand anthropology as a whole I would greatly appreciate the availability of the PDF files. The interest is great!

    Thank you

  • @therapiedelamusique

Thanks very much for your warm words. I shall be putting up the second lecture on Youtube today - and then one a week. I shall also put them up in higher quality MP4 onto my website (which can be found by googling Alan Macfarlane) which will be downloadable and have the text of the lecture wiith it. That may be a little while (a few weeks) before it is up... Alan

  • wonderful! thank you so much!

  • A really great lecture! Thank you very much Prof MacFarlane (I am a fan of Letters to Lilly). PDF files would be a good educational material for our students.

  • @gouxbaudiment

Thanks for your enthusiasm - most encouraging. I shall put up the next one next week.

    Two questions about pdf's

    a. what would they be - the text of the lecture (although I deviated from this a good deal)?

    b. where should I put them, if I did put them up - I can't see a way of putting them on Youtube, so they would either have to be a Blog, or on my website I suppose...

    Alan

  • Alan you should watch your back, saying democracy in China is the quickest way to never be seen again.

  • Dr. Macfarlane, so very generous of you to make these videos available to the wider public. It has been enormously enlightening. These topics float in confused form in so many educated minds.

Q: Could you make the outlines available as PDF files?

  • @necessarily

Thanks for your kind remarks. The outlines were in Chinese, though there is also an English version. The much fuller version is to be translated and published in China. I am not sure what to do with an English version yet.

Let me think about the pdf idea and see what others think... Alan

  • Yes - it depends on the enthusiasm of the audience. I have them prepared, but the speed I put them up depends on the degree of interest. There are also problems with time-sync towards the end of a number of them.

  • I figure this is a very recent lecture and thus we ought to be patient regarding the release of the following lectures. Am I right?

  • @MrOkmania In response to your comment about future lectures. Dr. Macfarlane has already published on these same topics most extensively. But, these lectures have the naturalness of the spoken word and flow into the mind easily.
