Don't be afraid. If you're looking at a guitar in this price range it's probably because that's you're budget, or you love the look of it. The guitar has an Alder body and a descent neck. That's what I call good bones. You can change everything else over time to your liking. The tuners for example. Check Episode 44. We took a neck from one SX $100 guitar and a body from another a made a killer Frankenstein.
Hello Parky, please don't worry about tuning...Get a nice tuner like a KORG and you're all set. The tuners of all guitars will move, the instrument will never stay in perfect tune. It's up to you (the player) to check your tuning before each song. If it's Hot, Cold, Humid or dry that will affect your tuning stability. There are different level tuning machines with different gear ratios. If you have some nice tuners, like Grovers, you'll be set. My vintage Japanese guitars are very stable.
At the time of recording the video we were using a Line 6 Flextone II XL combo with a jazz chorus clean sound and a boutique distorted setting with reverb, but if you get a chance to view some leater episodes you'll find that we switched to a 1983 Musicman RD112 amp, and later to a Fender Blues Deluxe with slight reverb and no effects. Enjoy.
Looking to do a mod on another tele - to make a lightweight rock guitar to do some Who covers. Since I cant afford a real SG with P90s, I have been looking at doing a tele with the 1/4 pound SD. I have heard the noise with high gain is quite bad with these pickups. What is your experience with noise? Would sheilding help?
Sheilding helps a lot, and you can also go to review sites that look at what other people are saying about all types of tele replacement pickups. Single coils are typically noisier, but there are many stacked type pickups that are essentially humbuckers; nice and bright, but without the hum.
I haven't played the TC-630, but the TC-730 is a much nicer instrument than the SX Tele. That being said, if you like the look or vibe of a specific SX guitar, than take it to your luthier to be set up and/or modified. A good example is our Episode 44 Frankenstein. We start with a SX SST strat and turn it into a monster player.
I just got the SX SST57 left handed. The best $100 I've ever spent. You wouldn't believe the quality of this guitar at this price. A guitar like this with "Fender" on the headstock would run at least $500-700 easily.
We agree Rondo is an undiscovered gem to most of the guitar playing world. We'll be reviewing the Furrian model soon......stay tuned and enjoy your SST. Episode 44 shows what you can do with a Rondo SST
You can go to Rondo Music on the web and look up their Furrian guitar model. That's the new name for the STL guitar. We had a guitar tech clean up the frets and add these Seymour Duncan pickups to this one. Enjoy.
I just received an SX STL 50 Vintage white for Christmas (my wife rocks lol) and love it so far. I also have an STL ash, STL/H (semi hollow) and an SST57 ash as well as an Agile AL3100. Sx guitars are a great base to start with if you like modding guitars and Kurt at Rondo music is a great guy to deal with.
Thanks for the video it is very useful. I put a quarter pounder in at the neck on Tele copy I have and it sounds really nice and have been considering the matching bridge pickup, I am order tonight and can't wait for it to arrive now :)
A "Tele" with a 13.7" radius neck? No Thanks!!!

How does the SX Tele series compare with the Agile Teles from Rondo? Do you think it is worth the extra hundred for the Agile TC-630?

When he said, "Good evening, I'm Jon Way," I expected him to follow with, "And this is Night Horrors In the Midnight Hour."
