I have to admit that I don't like the previous albums of DT, I just like some songs. But this album (and specially this song) made clear to me that they are amazing progressive songwriters. It's the first DT record that I like as a whole. I really hope that next albums are as great as this.

I love epics, and "In the Presence of Enemies" is one of the most exhilarating epics I've ever heard.

By the way, Portnoy is one amazing metal drummer.

Its about a guy who had his beloved taken from him and when he is just about to die the "Dark Master" (a demon) comes and offers him life and powers in exchange for half of his soul and to fight the fallen angels zombies. i don't think that this song was intended to be satanic in any way, though it can seem that way if it is taken too literally. when taken as it should be, it is about a man's struggle with his darker side. i don't think that it's satanic or atheistic in any way since (i believe) that petrucci is catholic, myung and labrie are christian, and rudess is jewish. i don't know about portnoy, though. the song itself is intented to be fiction/fantasy style.

The reason why is because the song you hear was not done in one take. It is several takes put together, and that's why the film does not look clean. But on the cd, the sound is so tight that no one can tell that they have been done in different takes.
