I have the Three OS running on My Mac , Windows 7 , OS X 5 and Linux and they all run great , and as you said the OS X wasn't made for geeks , its for normal users that don't make them self a lot of questioning about how things works behind the seances while their system its working , thats why is so easy to use and if you see it from their point of view Apple and MS are great , I mean for a guy that only use its computer to work send emails and reports they don't give a shit about linux

well ubuntu 10.04 is out and working well the only reason linux has less viruses is cos the viruses are usually in format exe bat xml and other windows format what format you trying to play

Linux is the best. Hands down! Its free, the software's free, everything is FREE!!! And most of the community is great! Easily has some of the most down to Earth people on any OS. Just go to the Ubuntu forums an you'll see. Windows fanbase is just a bunch of flaming tools who don't even know what they are talking about.

@buttpoop3 correction freebsd is unix based. Linux and Unix aren't the same thing. trust me the hardcore people into unix and linux will definitely tell you alll about that if you mention it to them. I made that mistake once.. ouch.

...start with, while keeping its complexity availabe for the hard core geeks as well. I love all the mentioned platforms as well. They can all have a place in the pc world altogether. I just hope their programmers can learn to work together in making their systems all somewhat compatable instead of fighting for dominance.

I agree with you on many levels with the complexity between the OS's (MacOS, then Windows then Linux) But most people who switch to linux do so through a complete distro package, ie SuSE or Ubuntu and rarely bother with the bare bones kernel anymore. The way I see it, the linux core by itself isnt very useful unless yous looking to build an OS from the ground up. with that said, Ubuntu, with its popularity, easier Gnome interface, and linux core. now gives even beginners a good system to...

i liked your unbiased comparassion , but i disagree on one point , the switch from pc windows to mac .... im an ex pc windows user and switched to mac , im satisfied and very happy with it , learned my mac in about a month .... at most .... its great .... i dont see why a pc user shouldnt switch .... if they understand pc , then mac is just simpler , easier .... very easy ....

@hellertytus That's true that linux is just a kernel, but think of what it represents. Linux represents the hard effort of thousands of kind developers working to make our experience easier. If you ask me, Linux is 100x better than Mac OS X even just because the people working on it choose to.

Ubuntu Linux is awesome. I installed it on a dell dimension xps t500 with a 500MHz Pentium 3 and 384MB ram. It booted just as fast as my laptop w/ windows 7, MAYBE EVEN FASTER! Then i pulled out the HDD and put it in a dell dimension 4400 w/ a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 and 512 MB ram. It booted up quicker but didn't need a single driver. The only driver I installed was optional. It was for the nVida graphics card. See how awesome Linux is????!!!!!?????!!!!?????!!!!!­?????!!

Linux started out to be a difficult-to-use OS, but popular among geeks who wanted to mess around with computers or people who really want to configure them specifically. That's why Linux is commonly found in servers and supercmputers. But now some Linux-based OSs such as Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Linux Mint, etc are now as user friendly as Windows. So now Windows doesn't even have much of an edge in the home user market. The only real advantage it has is people's fear of venturing into an unknown world.

Anyway a Imac based on Unix with a i7 is about 30% more efficient than a PC equiped with the same hardware. Unix : one program does one thing well.

One thing I really do disagree with is you flat out said "linux is not user friendly"... What about Ubuntu or Linux Mint?

My mom surfs the internet and checks her email, if i set up her email account for her inside Evolution Mail, she'd get on Mint and Be able to use it with complete and total ease without even noticing a difference.

If you ask me you do seem bias, I am somewhat bias towards Linux and have personally never had mac on my own system, but still, I do disagree with some things.

@h1ll37 try playing a movie. Every player I use seams to draw the frames incorrectly (e.g MPlayer, KMPlayer, VLC). Of course I use ubuntu 8.04 so there's a big difference there.

just go into ur terminal and type

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/ins­tall-css.sh

then

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

The only reason people don't have driver problems in OS X because they restrict your hardware to very few options, and therefore they can control far more problems they may arise in windows such as compatibility and security loopholes.

my linux media server has been running 4 years uninterrupted my xp boxes get reinstalled once a year and that overpriced powermac sitting in the wides office crashes when i try to do anything with it even after hours on the phone support mac is crap overpriced computer parts dont make it worthwhile

Although you posted some valid arguments, and I agreed that Linux dominates Windows. For the reason that I find that Linux is a pain to install, it loses many users. I this OS x is the best because, although they are over priced, there is no excuse for not getting a Mac, for a Macintosh platform can now run windows, both in boot camp, and inside the OS x. People may say that Mac's can get viruses. That is B.S.

Only Windows can get viruses easily.

ubuntu 9.04 Linux has gotten much better, drivers come with linux, to get my printer running, i plug it in and i'm done. installing apps, use synaptic package manager or use the .deb package = .exe, ubuntu is very user friendly, even my mom uses it. clicking is clicking. if you use google or amazon ur using linux. why do you think google runs linux, not because there cheap it's because it's strong,stable. I've tried a mac, it's easier to go from windows to linux than from windows to mac.

I very much love linux as well. Synaptic or .deb files also works on >8.04 but still yeah I know what you mean. Unfortunately a lot of the apps out there don't run on linux, which is disappointing. If everything was written in Java the world would be a better place. And also, try Ubuntu Server. It comes with no GUI what so ever. The GUI that you are enjoying is just a program (kind of) called gdm (GNU desktop manager).

Linux is also very secure.
