I'm pretty sure they're talking about the exams musicians have to take in order to get to a higher level. There are different kinds of exams depending on where you live and what type of tests. I took the ABRSM British testing in NJ and there are a total of 8 levels with grade 5 and grade 8 theory exams. You play three pieces of the 9 (?) they pick for you and test on scales, progressions, listening, oral, sight reading, ect. Then you get a score to see if you pass of fail.

Practice is everything on piano. Well, not everything, you must understand a piece to play it well and I don't think this is something you can really learn, but as far as technique is concerned practice is indeed everything.

i can't speak for her, of course, but i was like her. i think it's pretty common when you have a scary asian mother. it really doesn't take more than 1 hour a day with a scary asian mother looking over your shoulder. i could play things like this and Fur Elise when i was 10 after having played for only a year or so. otherwise, i was the average 10 year old. played with friends, had other activities, etc
