I just bought two of these, I know I need to have an area they can climb out of the water on and I've got that, and I know that I need to make sure they can't get out of the tank and I did that. Does anyone know if they need a filter in the water part or like an aerator? I'm new to this so I was hoping someone could help me out, I've got two crawfish in separate tanks so I know about them, but according to what I've read, care for the crabs is slightly different.
@CupcakeLuver26 So far it sounds good. You should get a filter, you can buy some for lower water levels if that's how your tank is set up or a small in water filter works wonders. Also make sure and give them a low level of salinity. These guys are brackish so they can't be kept in freshwater. To figure out how much salt to put in it'd be good to go to a local store and talk to the sales person. In personal businesses they tend to have more knowledgeable workers. PETCO/PETSMART isn't a good idea
I had two of these some years ago....in my beautiful aquarium full of varied tropical fish....they ate the bloody lot despite the sign I put on the tank saying "This is NOT a sushi bar"....I just reckon they couldn't read it ;-D
my red claw is a hider ...just like they all are an i noticed you had several other species in that tank. how did you balance the water level. allowing the crab to get to the surface and keeping fish? the second part of the question is what kind of fish will take up my res claws hiding place so i can see him once in a while?
You should not strive for other fish taking up his hiding space. Just let him hide if he feels like it. I had a little platform on top of my water filer where he could climb up. He ususally ate his food and defecated up there. Waterwise I made sure not to have any fish sensitive to a slightly higher salinity and then added a little bit more salt to the water than usual.
Ya, I guess that's ok. Better than nothing. He's a scavenger, so he'd eat whatever food happens to land on the bottom, but if you gave him, say, bloodworms one day, he'd probably eat about 5-10. He'll eat as much as can fit in his belly. But the more you feed him, the more dirty the water will be, so try to give him food equivalent to about 3-5 bloodworms per day and he'll be fine, I'd say.
He might have failed shedding. I'm not an expert on red claw craps, so maybe it was due to lack of some kind of nutrient in the water. But they usually survive even without one of their legs. ;)
@Tinwelende There are mainly four species: P. moeschi, P. bocourti, P. crassimanum, P. bocourti.
In memory of Dr. Klein, Dr. Rot, Dr. Marmor, Dr. Groß, Dr. Weibchen, Aurausio Female, Dark Female, and all crabs which have died for salvation. Beware of Trixie "Natural Stones".

You need some aeration of the water anyways, so an airstone or a proper filter, or both. And the crab needs to get out of the water every day. Sometimes he stays above the water for hours. So you NEED to have something where he can decide for himself whether to go above water or not.
@Tinwelende trhanks for the advice mate. i am going to lower my tank level a few inches and then float a artificial lilly or some thing. can you suggest anything??
He needs some kind of ramp so that he never has to lose ground under his feet as he's getting up over the surface. He won't swim straight up to something floating in the middle of the tank.
thank you sooo much! i know you've had to deal with all my questions, and i'm sorry. it probably got really annoying! love the video it has great music with it... this is for anyone, cause i know ur probably tired of answering my questions so this is for anyone who has a reply and then i'll be totally finished with my questioning! is it ok for the water to be pretty cold? like, do you have to have a lamp?
well, actually he is doing way better now, thanks a million! he ate like a lot and then didn't eat for two days and then ate a lot again and so on and so forth. is this healthy and normal for a red claw? how often do you feed yours? after i figure out this i think he'll be just fine thanks a lot! i am trying to convince my parents to let me get another one.
As long as he's eating every two or three days he'll be fine. ;) They don't really have to eat every day. I fed mine every day, since I fed the fish at the same time, but if yours eats every two days, you've got nothing to worry about. ;)
yes, i have land space for him but he doesn't ever go on it. i made sure he can if he wanted to though and i wonder why he doesn't like it. i give him shrimp pellets and he's not eating those. any advice?
@luckityduckity Maybe you could lower the water level even more, make sure the water is always clean and fresh and also try to give him some other kind of food? And also, getting him a companion might make him a little bit more active, too.
what happens if my red claw crab is not eating very well? is it because of stress? i've had him for about a week and he was eating quite a lot. I hardly knew anything about them and i have to change some stuff in my little five gallon tank, like make brackish water, ( i have the stuff already) and give him more hiding places. do you know why he's not eating very good? he is still very active...
Do you have land space for him that he can access easily? What kind of food are you giving him? Red blood worms and the tablets that the bottomfeeders eat should be all right for him.
