Could you tell mewhat the team name is if you know it, so I can look them up. I am hoping to attend the races this year, however flight costs and accomadation in these dire times are a bit high, ho hum. UK by the way :) .
It's a Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat, so it's US. It went into service in the Pacific theater at the very end of WW-II, so it never saw action vs. the Imperial Navy. The French used it in Indochina in the 1950s.
So, I see he added some more color to the paint job on that rig. Less embarrassing now when he lands with oil smeared all down the entire fuselage? Or did he manage to get through a year without a blown engine this time? LOL
I remember watching him land at Mojave with a blown engine. Set down on two prop blades and the tail wheel. Great show of smoke and sparks and right in front of me!
That was actually Darryl Greenamayer in a different F8F, not Rare Bear. Remember him throwing the canopy back and surfing the damn thing down the runway? Impressive to say the least. I shook his hand and told him the story at a Lancair fly-in a few years back. There's some 8mm film of it around here somewhere...

This is a different prop than the one they were running in the '90s. That one had much wider blades and went "wop, wop, wop, wop" when it flew past.

I bet that sound put the fear in the Germans and Jap's in #2.

It would have struck fear in the Pacific if the war had gone on longer. Thankfully, it didn't.
