this is one of the few songs where the eighties production and drum sounds work. A lot of that decade was just horrible. But this is magnifique;I wish knew who was saying the french bit, Can anyone help?
@colcol1970 Yeah, i've heard other versions now and they are slower. But this came from the CD mentioned in the description, so the manufacturers somehow encoded it wrong ...
Di I read boring thats the dark style music this moment . Hate to say but Visage is the exponent for the 80 sound which inspirated a lot of major bands. From the walls of ultravox to OMD to Massive attack.and many others. Boring . Dont make me mad.
As young lads we used to play football with Steve Strange and Mark Taylor when Mark visited his Mum on many occassions in Cardiff- pointy winkle pickers an all....beat that!!
"DEVENIR GRIS... Un homme dans une gare, isolé, une valise à ses côtés. Deux yeux, fixes et froids, montrent de la peur lorsqu'il se tourne pour se cacher..."
I seen an old episode of star trek and kirk lets this guy on the ship with a face that is half white and half black. But not a moment too soon and man gets on the ship with a face half white and half black. Oh please c'mon! Who are Simple Minds other than "Don't You Forget about me?" Nothing! In chart success, they are nowhere even close to Pet Shop Boys, let alone musical talents. Pet Shop Boys with lots of collaborations (Dusty Springfield, Liza Minelli, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue), an elite list of remixed songs (Blur, Madonna, Killers, Lady Gaga), a ballet, a movie, a musical and highly inspired theatrical performances (Performance) as headliners in Glaston) etc etc.
A big hooooraaaayyyyyy for that kind of music who open the way to all electronic music (respect to Kraftwerk) , still now no techno music can say that without that music they will have something to revendicate ...
As someone that still has the original of this track on 12" - back in the day and spending my hard earned allowance on it, I am disappointed that you felt it neccessary to 'block' this video. You weren't THAT good!
Steve Strange probably the most important New Romantic character: effeminate look, heavy make-up, captivating eyes, enigmatic gaze and Rococo fashion style. Though a Bowie Pierrot simulacrum, he was better looking and his youthfulness and decadent lifestyle ensured appeal. Besides the musical genius of Midge Ure, I think Visage was primarily a visual act (theatrical), a conceptual act created by Strange.
I couldn't agree more. I would also add Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Duran Duran, OMD, The Cure, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, Spandau Ballet etc. The 80s were the best years of my life. And I never tire of listening to music from then. So creative, interesting and enchanting.
@e0159742 there's a lot of people doing really great synthpop now, try out Tesla Boys (I recommend the song Neon Love), Power Glove, Mille, The Outrunners, Flashworx and similar stuff.
@sastal 100 million sales around the world, three great covers, 6 brilliant albums, 4 British chart toppers, albums with best producers, remixers (Stephen Hague, Julian Mendelshon, Trevor Horn, Rollo), songs for other artists (Tina Turner, Liza Minelli, Dusty Springfield) and most recently a Brit Award for Outstanding Achievement, 4 Grammy nominations, best Brit Pop Band, Best Brit Band, lots of Ivor Awards and a band that started to roll the electroclash wagon. Who are Simple Minds anyway?
Adam has long ago left Depeche Mode and they simply went downhill very fast after his departure. Their last three albums are simply mundane and the last one is simply unlistenable. In fact it was since the time DM went fake gothic. And let's not start with Vince. After DM, Vince went on to form a rubbish band called Erasure, making Casio music.
Oh I forgot to tell that PSB are inspirations for Keane, the Killers and Lady Gaga. Just watch Brit Awards ceremony and how fondly Brandon talks about them. Did I tell you about Electronic, a hybrid band with members from, ex-Smith, New Order and PSB. PSB's talents, inspirations and achievements are boundless in pop music and they are very underrated just because they are gay. And Simple Minds? What are their outstanding contribution to pop music? Did I hear the word nothing"
@harisbaki Lady GaGa is shit. How old are you? You mention Keane, so you may not have been there during the Ure and Kerr days. Electronic really is a New Order and Johnny Marr thing for which Tennant showed up a few times. I did not say PSB were not good. However, Ultravox and Simple Minds were groundbreaking and molded much of what was to come in the '80s. Listen to New Gold Dream, their fifth album by 1982, and get a lesson in pop history.
@harisbaki You like to mention chart successes of PSB and then go and trash Clarke's Erasure? Depeche Mode fill stadiums with 90k people. As much as I enjoyed PSB live a couple of years ago (last album was so so), they fill small theaters in comparison. Nice but not quite DM. They did not duet with Dusty and Liza and I don't think they really cared. Craig David duetted with Sting. So what? Does that make him better than someone who did not? Stop talking like you are some sort of authority.
@paolopadano Agree, Utter class!! 1980-1990 was a revolutionary time for world music. Depeche Mode are the masters, they give birth to so much that You will here TODAY!!!! I.E.......DANCE MUSIC.... Alphaville are also awesome. have a listen!!!!!!
Who composed this song? Something about Midge Ure and Billy Ure? They had to be behind the hymn of the new romantics because they were the romantic heroes of the 80’s, could you imagine a party with all the new wave groups and romantics in? That would have been too much!!!
indeed it does hargo... kraftwerk pioneered electro back in the late 70s early 80s until detroit/chicago somehow managed to convinced themselves (and most of the planet it seems) that they 'invented' it in the mid 80s ( i.e.. acidhouse/techno), but i digress.. this has to be one of my all time favourites of the new wave electro coming out of europe back at the beginnings of the 80s.. anthem!!!
All these 80s fanboys can stay in their bubbles, though; the arts always find their ways to flourish and evolve, despite the time period. Although its depressing that good music like this isn't quite the mainstream norm, to think that something beautiful is limited to a certain time period is insane. There's a bunch of wonderful synthpop artists (for the less versed folk, Visage's primary genre) with revolutionary visions even today.

@PlasmaFairy5 That's Steve Strange I think...founder member..also ran the Mud club..(which was kind of next to where the Astoria was,Charing X Rd)... and so on... never fade....
@ MalcumTurnball - I completely agree with what you have said. Main stream music has really went down hill in the last few years. Chats mean nothing these days. I really hope that once X Factor and other reality music shows die off, a rebirth of good music might occur!
@BorderTed - lol, that's wot i was thinking. I remember first time i heard it on the radio. Music in the 80s, 70s & 60s was all about songs, now its just about the music, if you know what I mean. Also there were charts back then now the charts have died due to file sharing. sad really because all society could 'get involved' in the top 40 and the zeitgeist of it, if u know what i mean, again :)
Guys i'm pretty new to all this but I really like it. anyways, I saw this clip on VH1 back to the 80's list or something a couple of years ago. I really liked the song but I can't remember the artist anymore. It was a guy with a sort of hat(maybe purple?) walking / dancing in a disco or something. If you remember this please let me know =) thanks so much!
Saw Steve Strange at London Victoria Station yesterday.
Whilst Queen, with Bohemian Rhapsody invented the pop video, it was Visage who re-invented it by passing directorial from the film makers to the art-school directors.
I also grew up in the 80s. There is a lot of 80s nostalgia in the comments, and rightly so because so much of that music and in particular this song is so good. But during the 80s we grew up in the shadow of the 60s. We were we told that the 80s music and generation were shallow and superficial compared to the 60s and early 70s. During the 80s we grew up in Beatles reverence. Now that I am middle aged I realize that was caused by Baby Boomer jealousy. Note to young people: enjoy the present
@materhon some relevant and accurate comments there. That said, much of the 80's was infact a 60's revival.....after the death of disco and flares came a colourful, trendsetting and radical decade that contained more than a hint of 60's, particularly in dress sense. You remember...slim jim's, pencil-thin ties, Wayfarer sunglasses...Beatles medleys, Jive Bunny.....
@death2hiphopnRnB . Great user name! Even The Monkeys had a revival in 80s. But I vividly remember the thirtysomethings continuously reminding us what a bad decade it was for music and fashion. I am amazed at how many young people say they wish they grew up in the 80s. Really? No internet nor cell phones, etc. Music choice constrained by what the industry wanted to push. And the angst of nuclear war. Enjoy the present & enjoy the 80's! Music industry has 20-year marketing cycle: 90s revival soon
@BbilllyNoMates. Bit of an obtuse statement to make. I love the 60's to 80's music but there is a huge amount of good music in any of the other decades since.
@carl2017 huh, there may be a few average bands but no-one, and I mean no-one, stands out. eg, Coldplay, Snow Patrol etc. What is there about that bunch? Remember Radiohead? What the hell were they about? OK Computer is the most dreadful, dreary album I ever heard. Now we have that Alexandria Burke the Karaoke kid. Best she can come up with is Hallelulia. Pff, rubbish and she's just one example. 60s, 70s and 80s bands are still around and will be til they can't any longer.
never b another decade like it ! music never was the same after this !! beats all the crap thats around 2 day we need more 80s revivals !! days gone but never never 4 gotten !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feel u all. They call it the 'high profile 80's'. Everything was bigger then life, though the people were just like u and me... Best decade of my life, growing up, discovering.
I still have good, very good friends from those days. One time we were up all night listening our favorite classics on YT to each other. And we all have the same feelings as the people here.
Musically, the 80's were the last innovative musical years following the 50's, 60's and 70's. After that: no more real news...
80s music was brilliant,it was more about the music and the group, more than the money, you did'nt see them in huge mansions, and showing off what they got on cribbs, its too much about the money and fame nowadays..garbage..i loved the 80s,its the only thing i can look back to and smile...wish i was back there now :-(
@bigdonkey1000 yeah, couldn't agree more, although the 80's electro thingumyjig is coming back now. A new wave of bands, pardon the pun! hehehehehe. More on money and fame, though!
Lets face it, today's music is a side show. Right up until the end of the 80's pop culture was centre stage. These days even people who do really well on the x factor are forgotten within months and those that are remembered just look very glamourous and gormless and sing boring songs.

Sean Penn...how did you end up on a music cover!?
Awesome song :D

@ MalcumTurnball - I completely agree with what you have said. Main stream music has really went down hill in the last few years. Chats mean nothing these days. I really hope that once X Factor and other reality music shows die off, a rebirth of good music might occur!

I can't beilve that its 30 years old this month, still sounds as fresh as it did in November 1980!
BorderTed 1 year ago
@BorderTed - lol, that's wot i was thinking. I remember first time i heard it on the radio. Music in the 80s, 70s & 60s was all about songs, now its just about the music, if you know what I mean. Also there were charts back then now the charts have died due to file sharing. sad really because all society could 'get involved' in the top 40 and the zeitgeist of it, if u know what i mean, again :)

How can you not love this ? What a fantastic mix. You don't get this stuff anymore. More's the pity.

Visage had half of Ultravox (Ure & Currie) and half of Magazine (McGeoch & Dave Formula) plus Steve and Rusty Egan.
I wish I knew who played on this. Probably Billy Currie on synths and that violin or viola.

Your ears don't deceive you; the key of this recording is up a semitone from the original recording's key.

Note to young people: enjoy the present
materhon 1 year ago 2
@materhon You are so right...You took the words out of my mouth. The 80's fashion is back. Not hook on the clothes but hook on the songs.
123456789jklmn 1 year ago
@materhon some relevant and accurate comments there. That said, much of the 80's was infact a 60's revival.....after the death of disco and flares came a colourful, trendsetting and radical decade that contained more than a hint of 60's, particularly in dress sense. You remember...slim jim's, pencil-thin ties, Wayfarer sunglasses...Beatles medleys, Jive Bunny.....
death2hiphopnRnB 1 year ago
@death2hiphopnRnB . Great user name! Even The Monkeys had a revival in 80s. But I vividly remember the thirtysomethings continuously reminding us what a bad decade it was for music and fashion. I am amazed at how many young people say they wish they grew up in the 80s. Really? No internet nor cell phones, etc. Music choice constrained by what the industry wanted to push. And the angst of nuclear war. Enjoy the present & enjoy the 80's! Music industry has 20-year marketing cycle: 90s revival soon
materhon 1 year ago
@materhon 60s til the 80s was the greatest. Everything after is TOTAL CRAP!!!
BbilllyNoMates 1 year ago
@BbilllyNoMates. Bit of an obtuse statement to make. I love the 60's to 80's music but there is a huge amount of good music in any of the other decades since.
carl2017 1 year ago
@carl2017 huh, there may be a few average bands but no-one, and I mean no-one, stands out. eg, Coldplay, Snow Patrol etc. What is there about that bunch? Remember Radiohead? What the hell were they about? OK Computer is the most dreadful, dreary album I ever heard. Now we have that Alexandria Burke the Karaoke kid. Best she can come up with is Hallelulia. Pff, rubbish and she's just one example. 60s, 70s and 80s bands are still around and will be til they can't any longer.

@Therealanimale Yeah great innovative period for music.

Lets face it, today's music is a side show. Right up until the end of the 80's pop culture was centre stage. These days even people who do really well on the x factor are forgotten within months and those that are remembered just look very glamourous and gormless and sing boring songs.
