I had the original double album, The Faces I've been. when I was a kid. Unfortunately, it got sold to The Great Escape, old record store in Madison Tn. Imade some drawings of Jim on the sleeve's if anyone out there has this album, I, would love to buy it back.
Awesome! I had no idea the poem was ever put to music, much less by a master, like Croce. I think he really captured the spirit of Kipling with this interpretation.
I've been looking for this song for about 35 years. A very long time ago I had this on LP; a good friend let me hear it again on 8-track. Both were lost after my divorce and I haven't been able to find it since then. Thanks for reuniting me with an old friend and some great memories.
A good version of Kiplings poem.A tributeto all the[ bistes ] water carriers during that time.I call my grandson this ..his dad is indian and played for india and still does play in the NT..he takes out the drinks little gunga din [gunga din is a tommy atkins corruption of gunga deen.. meaning Spirit of the Ganges ..in hindi]
realy good, but the american accent just doesent work with the lyrics somehow, example when he says bloomin'. dont get me wrong its realy good but somehow it just doesent realy work at times.
If you have the time I would greatly appreciate the chord / Tab sheet for this song also. I have been looking for a cd with this on for some time and cant find it.
Borrowed this album and listened just a couple times before giving the album back. Haven't been able to find a copy since and that was 30 years ago. Thanks for appreciating two great artists and making them available for the rest of us.
Hope you like response I posted. Thought I would let it hang out with you for a while. It is from an audio tape Jim lent me. Gunga din was on it the tape too. Gave the tape to Ingrid a year or two ago. It was of a concert Jim & Ingrid performed decades ago.
@NYVoice Yo! Upper Darby Bill here. ( Jims hometown) So you dig this? Check out Jim's version of Robert Burns' (Ol' Lang syne) poem called 'The Ball of Kerrimuir'. Real good.

Yes. One of the best if not the best song done by Jim Croce. First heard it playing in the chow hall at ZAB, AB in Spain in 1978

That is correct
I have even two albums, a single and a double version, of the faces i've been

I got mine too back in 75. Side 4 with Jim narrating with the background music is such a wonderful tribute to his nature and wit.

This is seriously one of the best songs ever!!!

Of course you know the lyrics are from the Rudyard Kipling poem. Jim applied a wonderful melody to it.
