Yeah. Pause the game. I'm serious here. Pause it and wait for the console to stop making noises. This allows the game to spawn yoshis without wasting valuable time. It worked for me, so try it out and share this with others.

so pk trainer isnt considered dead until all of his pokemon are

no. the pkmn trainer had three stock instead of pika who had one stock. Once you knock one of the pokemon out, they switch automatically, or so I am led to believe. But they still loose a life once you knock them out.

I think that it being an event match had something to do with it as well. But that's just a guess.

Yeah most of the event matchs they make you kill all three pokemon but by yourself normally you can use any.
