The biggest threat towards the whales does not come from the small whaling fleet, it comes from all the poisons seeping into the oceans from guess who.
Maybe add in more than just poisons, like VLF radio and noise, whatever.
Even the fisheries can be a competitor for food. More to say but I'll leave it.
Strong forces have been at work here for years, because it fits into a certain agenda. Choose: GM crops or some hunting and "old ways" instead.

Norway kills whales and the Faroer Islands kill whales, many peoples like the Inuit kill whales.
They can stop it at once, if they want it. It's very easy.
If you want to stop the poisoning of the oceans, you have to do so much work, it would take a century. It's a necessary work, but it's very hard to do. We have to start this work.

I know that meat *production* is a big waste the way it's done in the large scale.
What is not a waste is harvesting of a surplus, of things already there, and of course - not ruining it by greed.
But, you need to take into consideration who "owns" the food you are supposed to eat as a veggie, who is it that is behind it?

I saw one pic of a GP vessel just standing around as these guys were whaling right infront of them. Ok, i'll bite....how would you go about humanely killing a whale. It would take a large projectile to penetrate their skull and kill them quick. I imagine a detailed knowledge of the anatomical structure of a whale's brain would be neccassary. I don't think a .50 cal would be large enough.
