Colgate-Palmolive needed Ethel's personality {and pipes} to push Vel towards consumers, as it really wasn't selling that well in grocery stores at the time. They literally paid through the nose for her and the rights to the song...in the end, however, Colgate discontinued manufacturing Vel by the late '70s.
