While New York was settled by the Dutch, they decided not to fight the English for the territory and agreed to the Articles of Capitulation, which allowed the Dutch nationals to remain in the province and to retain their property. King Charles II granted the charter to the new colony to his brother James, the Duke of York, hence the name.

As a Belgian I love to hear about the founding of NY, most people forget that in the 17th century, when Europe started colonizing intensively, the Dutch founded 'Nova Belgica' on the spot Manhattan lies today. ;-)

Question to New Yorkers: do you get teached about those things?

I often wonder what image people from abroad get from our country, hence. :)
