Most psychedelic band ever seen in the world's music history... And btw, Rod Evans Could Do, No Doubt, without Deep Purple. I wish he never quit this band... or at least his musical career... He was one of the best Singers, surface of earth had ever seen.
Thank God there's at least some footage of this band. And thank you who took the time to post it. Thanks to my buddie's dad who's record we slapped on the turntable & our jaws hit the floor. Absolutely 1 of the most overlooked, hidden but brilliant records of all. I'll never understand why CB is not revered like DP. Especially this record. And Rhino's playing is par with all the other known greats, superior to some. Rock on Rhino. Rock on
I got to see Rhino with CB in, I think, 1978 after their third record came out. He was badass and classy at the same time. That first CB record was a masterpiece and he was the one of the main reasons why. RIP....
RIP RHINO!!! Such a HUGE bummer, as I only learned of this band about a week ago after reading an old Classic Rock mag that did a feature on the band! I had NEVER heard of them and fell in love with this first album! SOOO bummed that there can't be a reunion now...
I forgot how good they were. They were way progressive for the time. Had they released that first album five years later, it would have been much better recieved. I keep thinking about Marty McFly wailing on the guitar for his parents crowd. They weren't ready for it, but as he said "Your kids are gonna love it." Seven years later, VanHalen and all the rest came. That was really where this album belonged. Somewhere about 1979. But some of us were ready. I certainly was.
Bad Ass Record I got it in 1972 when it first came out !!! Rhino is very very good .The record ranks right there with Holy Diver, the first Dio solo record
Fine performance of one of the best hard progressive rock albums of all time. I can't imagine who would sound better singing with this group than Evans. I'm sure there are some who would prefer a high-singing Steve Perry sound-alike, but not me. I'll take Evans any day.
One quick question, though. Is this really Part One of this concert? This most certainly isn't the first part of the album. The video you have labeled Part Two is the first part of the album.
one of the greatest bands that hardly anyone even knows about...when i discovered this bands first album in my teens i was totally blown away ...and rods voice was great....hell i loved him in purple
@Drumguy1988 So you're saying these Iron Butterfly/Johnny Winter graduates were getting Deep Purple's 'sloppy seconds' picking up Evans as their singer? I'm just happy to know the cat landed on his feet, after getting axed by Blackmore and Co. for Ian Gillan. They seemed like a pretty good 'dream team' to me. Certainly better than Foreigner, Bad English, or any other US/UK supergroup turned out to be!
@notfragile33 YEP! That's exactly what I'm saying. Hey I have nothing but Respect for Reinhard, Dorman, and Caldwell. They are Incredible musicians and players. I just don`t think Evans was the right singer for them.
I've Loved Lee Dorman and Rhino ever since "IRON BUTTERFLY" Lee Dorman was one of the reasons I became a bass player (listen the the bass riffs on the flip side of "IN-A-GOD-A-DA-VIDA"). All they really needed was a hot drummer and song writer, they couldn't have done any better than Bobby Caldwell. Oddly enough I learned of the band in 1972 from a friend from Sweden. It only took 40 years, but I never thought I'd see a live performance. This is Fantastic
This line up with Bobby Caldwell was as progressive at it came in the early seventies,I was 17 years old when I first heard this album, and me and many fellow musicians listened intently, counting the very unique time signatures beat by beat.
Very tightly structured, very hip,and sacrificing popularity for musical integrity, and it was because of this inherent musical depth that their music endures.
The elements all fit so well, heart felt lyrics,Rhino's guitar lines, locking into Bobby's beats
I am so stoked to see the number of people who have watched this clip! It's amazing to see Captain Beyond "live" after having literally grown up with their music. I was in Jr. High when the first amazing album came out. We used to hang out and listen to this music forever. Passing around that album with the lenticular 3D cover (ala Rolling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request") added to the mesmerizing effect of fully getting into their music - totally amazing full on rock n' roll.
Attention Drummers/musicians!!! Get the book "realistic rock" by Carmine Appice!! If you like 60's-70's rock drumming it's the Bible. It turned my hopeless brother into a real rock guy. He would work on it every day and half way through the book and after learning the first Zeppelin record beat for beat he would go back to the jams and sound exactly like Simon Kirk of Free and Bad Company...with bonham fills to boot. It could save rock drumming im serious. Amazon.com
So much Hendrix Influence... Its great!!!!! I remember these album covers as a kid. My dad had all three of these albums and I can remember very clearly rocking this on his Gerard Turntable and Bang Olfson speakers.. circa 1974... funny even as a 9 year old I could hear something special in this first record. The other albums were cool.. but as mentioned by other posters.. this first record was EPIC!!!!
Another album I bought that my roomies that I was crazy till they heard it. Queen's first was another( To gay) as if the name of the Band had reached a certain gay limit.
I happened to have been in the old Columbia Record Club when this came out or I may have never heard it. The 3D cover was the hook and I bought it and was blown away. I have their next CD but it has a moment or 2 of greatness but nothing they ever did came close to their 1st effort. It has never gotten the airplay or recognition it deserved.
Captain Beyond is a phenominal band that did not get the PR from Capricorn (Phil Walden) to put them over the top,,some band by the name of Allman Bros. was getting all the ink out of Capricorns office
Oh, and did I mention an Eric Clapton, Cream, rip off to. I mean stolen, oh, the politcally correct term is "borrowed". hahahah LMAO. Excuse me while I go listen to Cream and Jimi Hendrix
@rolandrog This album was dedicated to Duane Allman. I think this album was in more respect for him and southern rock. While they only had a lone guitarist, they certainly had the percussion to match any rock band.
Tyranny and Mutation - Blue Oyster Cult - When this album was released it was in a class by itself it was so different and still stands the test of time as an epic piece of musical performance. Again, better taken as a whole.
Obviously I could have added others but these are the ones I listen to unbroken from beginning to end. Not many in that category. Moody Blues "Classic 7" is most of the others.
Abbey Road - The Beatles - Obviously this could have been Number 1, I put it here to point out that it is an epic piece of work to be listened to as a whole musical experience.
Aqualung - Jethro Tull - This was a true masterpiece. They had no idea what they were creating at the time or the production would have been better. I hope technology will allow us to one day get a remastered production of this awesome piece. I give the guitar solo in the title song as one of the top 5 in history.
Gypsy - Gypsy - How many can make their 1st a double album?
Gypsy can actually be obtained in remastered form on eBay from one of the original members. Search for "Gypsy 4 Pack"
Paradise Theater - Styx - Another Masterpiece that has to be listened to from beginning to end to really appreciate. IMHO it is still the best thing they ever did as a whole package.
So many of these comments by others could be mine. Those of us who love CB really LOVE them. This album was/is one of those that can be played over and over and over again.
Yeah, John Lydon. Cool! The Sex Pistols were such a super band. "The queen just sits there and drinks tea / But all we want is ANARCHY!". Their music was totally authentic, edgy, and raw. People who are older than 21 and still listen to it aren't infantile at all. And it didn't have anything to do with the depoliticized postmodern notions and embarrassing fashion-cult of late-70s hipstery. So radical!
Awesome stuff....a super-group lineup. Rod Evans from Deep Purple on vocals, Bobby Caldwell later to go on to Johnny Winter, Eric Dorman and Rhino Rinehart from Iron Butterfly. This was some heavy stuff that unfortunately should have sold bigger.
in 73 or 74? i missed seeing Captain Beyond live at the Ft. Wayne Armory, when they were opening for another band. The story was that they were using a fog machine, and he headliners said, if they use that machine, we arent playing. So the promoters stood with the headliners.Captain Beyond wouldnt play, and we got to see 2 1/2 hrs of ZZTopp doing the Tres Hombres stuff. I got a free demo of the Sufficiently Breathless LP, that I still have
its more straight down the line than Jimi, a bit like the CCR of prog/rock/fusion, its still good, don't know why musics got to be about whose better than who, if you relate to it and its does something for you, thats what its about. Musicanship is something else than can be commented on objectivily, but art is subjective, take from it what you want.
I can't thank you enough. C.B. was my favorite group when I started experimenting. Followed by Sabbath of course. I have played Album at least a month my entire life. I'm 53 now 13 when it as released. This is THE album. This could never be done a second time to be sure. Thanks again so much.
Just a note for anyone that has not heard it, the "Evil Men" cut off the Sufficiently Breathless CD comes up to the quality of this album, unfortunately IMHO none of the rest of the CD does, I ripped the whole thing and that was the only song I kept, when you consider I listen to the 1st album as a whole probably a couple of times a month (an album I bought originally almost 40 years ago), you can see the epic proportions (musically speaking) Capt Beyond's 1st album set.
Capt Beyond's first album set the bar so high that they could never meet it again, it has to be one of the top 5 rock albums of all time. Still one of those CDs I have to listen to from beginning to end to really appreciate the epic piece of music this really was and still is.
@mail4dcm Yeah, typically the more consistent bands like Uriah Heep receive the most recognition. It's almost as if all the creativity Captain Beyond had went into writing and composing the first album, and usually labels rush bands (especially back then) to release as many studio recordings as possible within a fiscal year. Most of the bands that had one great release and then faded into obscurity folded under the pressure or simply couldn't keep cranking out quality material every 6 months.
@mail4dcm and what is really sad... you listen to the radio... and you will NEVER hear C.B. played. this album is fucking amazing. it never ceases to amaze me how many unheard AMAZING bands never get any air play on these so called classic rock stations.
talkingwall, You are right. That is Bobby. Phenomenal. And yes Johnny Winter And Live is a phenomenal piece of work. Love Johnny Winter. Seen him twice in the last 4 years. But I truly feel that there is no better drummer than Bobby Caldwell.
my band back in 74-75 used to cover Raging River of Fear, big fun to play. We finished it off with that high pitched note played over and over that morphed into the Beck Bogart Appice version of Superstition
@purplerocks666 Yup, Blackmore is a fucking turd- I prefer the first Cpt. Beyond album to anything DP ever did, a truly underappreciated/underrated masterpiece...
Phenomenal. I still to this day love Captain Beyond. Bobby's drumming is phenomenal, the playing, the signing. It just don't get any better then this. Rod's voice as he spoke as the moon speaks is phenomenal sounding. Thanks so much for posting.
@Lobsterlady2362 If I recall correctly that is Bobby Caldwell on drums, he's the guy on that wonderful Johnny Winter And "Live" release from early 70's.
i hear a little Jimi Hendrix "Experience", too. These guys just stole riffs from a lot of other songs and just jumbled them together. Better to be a good borrower than an awful original. LOL.
@rolandrog That's specious thinking...sounds like u haven't got an original thought in your head either. I doubt if you've ever tried to write a song or come up with a riff yourself so why knock these blokes?
Sitting back in the seventies and trying Bobby Caldwells Dancing Madly Backwards drumpattern out on my new Premier Drumset. Dakadu-ga-du-ga. Thought it was a signal for a change of the 4/4 dominated rock-period. Oh I was wrong.
@glurpus BOBBY PLAYED WITH MANY MANY ARTIST THROUGH THE YEARS.PS SAW HIM SEVERAL TIMES LIVE WITH VARIOUS ARTIST.INCLUDING JOHNNY WINTER .WHO IS FROM TEXAS USA........THANKS.LOL.OLD ROCKER SAN ANTONIO TEXAS...CHEERS .ROCK ON!!!!!!!!
MARSHALLS AND STRATS GO TOGETHER LIKE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY.THANKS TO BOBBY ROD LEE AND THE GROUP 4 YEARS OF TRUE GROOVE THE MUSIC..TRUE ROCK AT ITS PERFECTION.PS PLAY LOUD TO GET FULL EFFECT.........THANKS 4 GREAT UPLOAD.OLD ROCKER.SAN ANTONIO TEXAS GOOD OH USA.........THANKS........
@Fongolitus They wanted someone who could hit the high notes which they didn't feel Rod could do, although his style really suited the late '60s stuff.
Always in search of classic rock (especially non commercial rock) this band proved to me that if I dig deeper and deeper there are treasures to find at every level. I had never heard of these guys until a couple of years ago at work...As soon as I heard the first riff I had to ask the guy, who was spinnin' the cd, who this was....Went out and bought the cd the next day.....Kick Ass R n R!
Incredible musicians all. Never a boring moment with Captain Beyond. So underrated and under promoted. That's what happens when attorney's and accountants run the music industry. Real fucking music never gets heard and we wind up with Lady Gaga, Nirvana (yes they still suck) and Blink 182. Some call it 'Alternative Music'. Alternative to what? Talent?
@yabetterbringit No. It's shit. IMHO... Anyone who craves THAT much attent clearly has some serious psychological issues. (And I'm not even a psychologist!)
PsychedelicFerret: I agree 100%...THE best prog album of all time. Most incredible album ever to escape the ears of the majority of the world. Somehow they just didn't get the attention of the masses to the degree I believe they should have. By the way, I went to Bobby Caldwell's website theofficialbobbycaldwellsite (the incredible drummer), wrote him and he wrote me back and we actually corresponded a few messages...really cool guy!
When I first heard CB back in the 70's at school I fell in love with the groove, I still have both the original 1st vinyl album and of course the CD of the 1st album. Simply one of the best albums, this and Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs made me who I am!
Also they are not Prog rock they are pychedelic heavy rock... beign a brit there is no way we would put this in the same vogue as Nektre, Gong, Hawkwind, Yes... the Jazz elements give it a slight jazz rck feel.
When I first heard CB back in the 70's at school I fell in love with the groove, I still have both the original 1st vinyl album and of course the CD of the 1st album. Simply one of the best albums, this and Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs made me who I am!
damn this band kicks majors ass especially that first album its a bloody shame they couldnt or just wouldnt stick to that format that is so revered by there following how many ever there are of us who dig there work the other two albums i must say dont have the oomph that the first one has anyway thanks sooo much for the video
I grew up with this LP and think it's exceptional - I now have the CD. I saw them live at the Hollywood Bowl in '72 (booked between Gentle Giant and Black Sabbath). Black Sabbath had a bad night - only 4 songs. Captain Beyond rocked - played the whole album really well. I also remember Van Halen as "Mammoth" (pre Roth & fame) covering Captain Beyond tunes (also really well) at a Pasadena park concert - so, they must have appreciated them as well! The early '70s was an amazing era for rock!

in 73 or 74? i missed seeing Captain Beyond live at the Ft.

Just fantastic. This is one of the best rock line ups, along with Cactus there ever was.

The lead singer is from Slough! This and The Office are the only two good things I can think that have come from Slough, and probably ever will do.

no offence to anyone, but this is half ass, electric lady land blows this away by a million miles, Its not bad, just not special.
southsaturndelta220 1 year ago
@southsaturndelta220
its more straight down the line than Jimi, a bit like the CCR of prog/rock/fusion, its still good, don't know why musics got to be about whose better than who, if you relate to it and its does something for you, thats what its about. Musicanship is something else than can be commented on objectivily, but art is subjective, take from it what you want.

This some good shit.Takes me back to my youth at my neighbours jam sessions, getting wasted with my head against his amp.Good bonging music.

I can't thank you enough. C.B. was my favorite group when I started experimenting. Followed by Sabbath of course. I have played Album at least a month my entire life. I'm 53 now 13 when it as released. This is THE album. This could never be done a second time to be sure. Thanks again so much.
Peace.

Still one of those CDs I have to listen to from beginning to end to really appreciate the epic piece of music this really was and still is.
mail4dcm 1 year ago 37
@mail4dcm, I agree !!
rogml 1 year ago
@mail4dcm Yeah, typically the more consistent bands like Uriah Heep receive the most recognition. It's almost as if all the creativity Captain Beyond had went into writing and composing the first album, and usually labels rush bands (especially back then) to release as many studio recordings as possible within a fiscal year. Most of the bands that had one great release and then faded into obscurity folded under the pressure or simply couldn't keep cranking out quality material every 6 months.
deathlightning92 1 year ago
@mail4dcm What are the other 4 rock albums of all time?
veturlidi 11 months ago
@mail4dcm and what is really sad... you listen to the radio... and you will NEVER hear C.B. played. this album is fucking amazing. it never ceases to amaze me how many unheard AMAZING bands never get any air play on these so called classic rock stations.

@solidturd666 you would probably end up hearing this band the Deep Tracks stations.

talkingwall, You are right. That is Bobby. Phenomenal. And yes Johnny Winter And Live is a phenomenal piece of work. Love Johnny Winter. Seen him twice in the last 4 years. But I truly feel that there is no better drummer than Bobby Caldwell.
Lobsterlady2362 1 year ago
my band back in 74-75 used to cover Raging River of Fear, big fun to play. We finished it off with that high pitched note played over and over that morphed into the Beck Bogart Appice version of Superstition

Phenomenal. I still to this day love Captain Beyond. Bobby's drumming is phenomenal, the playing, the signing. It just don't get any better then this. Rod's voice as he spoke as the moon speaks is phenomenal sounding. Thanks so much for posting.
Lobsterlady2362 1 year ago
@Lobsterlady2362 If I recall correctly that is Bobby Caldwell on drums, he's the guy on that wonderful Johnny Winter And "Live" release from early 70's.

i hear a little Jimi Hendrix "Experience", too. These guys just stole riffs from a lot of other songs and just jumbled them together. Better to be a good borrower than an awful original. LOL.

@rolandrog That's specious thinking...sounds like u haven't got an original thought in your head either. I doubt if you've ever tried to write a song or come up with a riff yourself so why knock these blokes?

Talent?

PsychedelicFerret: I agree 100%...THE best prog album of all time. Most incredible album ever to escape the ears of the majority of the world. Somehow they just didn't get the attention of the masses to the degree I believe they should have. By the way, I went to Bobby Caldwell's website theofficialbobbycaldwellsite (the incredible drummer), wrote him and he wrote me back and we actually corresponded a few messages...really cool guy!

Mail4Dcm,
When I first heard CB back in the 70's at school I fell in love with the groove, I still have both the original 1st vinyl album and of course the CD of the 1st album.
