It gets around 8 MPG atleast on my 78 bronco it does it has 38.5 Super Swamper Tsl's on it so you might get a lil more I dont know, but you should invest into a hydrogen fuel assister I built one for 40 bucks all it needs is water and baking soda one gallon for a whole year maybe 2 depends how much i use it, and its only like 1$ for a gallon of that water mill pure water, It gives me around 12-14mpg thats a 50% better gas milage
Chrome can actually make your engine lose heat, it is true. I was unaware of that until I saw that on an episode of Trucks one morning on Spike TV.. but a chrome air filter cover? Come on now.. that isn't going to screw up heat dispersion for goodness sakes.. and it definitley looks a hell of a lot better than a typical stock cover..not tacky at all..
Man I have a 460 Ford in a 1981 airport shuttle bus that's been sitting about five years. We are working on it little by little. The engine runs good, we put on a fuel pump etc. etc. Now the brakes are ready to go on & can drive it the 90 miles home for the real work!
i know it does make it heat up a lot faster but i am not going to drive it everywhere. and i will most likely not put a thermostat it it so it is always flowing.
cool. you have just showed that you know nothing about cars. congrats. chrome head covers, and all that chrome shit DOES disperse the heat differently as it is not a good material for conducting heat. water cooling has nothing to do with that fact. if an engine is hotter in some parts than others, it will not run right decreasing performance. thanks for the comment!
perhaps, but not THAT MUCH.Performance moped cylinders are often painted flat black to enhance the reat dispersion, but it shouldnt matter on a water cooled engine. The rocker covers on a normal car engine doesnt become hotter than that you can lay your hand on it.Hell,I even think it wouldnt matter a bit even if you chromed the entire engine block since its the cooling system's job to cool the engine, not the rocker covers.
wow..seriously you believe that..a fully chromed engine would really be a bitch it would lack a hell of a lot of performance. by the way please put your hand on the valve covers of a car with it running at full temperature and see what happens. look at any performance car and youll realize that chrome is never used on the engine and theres a reason for that: chrome is bad. it destroys the heat dispersion, which has nothing to do with the cooling system, by the way.
hey mr,look what I found in a kawasaki ad...chrome composite plated lining for wear resistance and superior heat dispersion...This is the only thing i found on the internet describing the relation between chrome and "heat dispersion".You even manage to state that "the cooling system has nothing to do with the heat dispersion"!Ok,from the surface of the engine but that has nothing to do with the cooling! How much of the heat goes through the engine block instead of the radiator do YOU think??
it wasnt like that the whole time, i just didnt feel like putting that cover back on it. I did a tune up and i took the engine out of that econoline the same day.
i was telling my dad to drop a 460 in his 1976 Ford F-250. Hes got a 390 in it with only 10k miles on it. He said that the power difference isnt much. that true?
dont do it, chances are good that 390 FE has just as if not more power then a stock 460. because i have a 390 in my 75 f250 and it would run circles around my 79 f150 with a 460.
it all depends on how it is geared if you ask me. i have a 300 in my 87, and i can almost smoke a 351 with it. but then again i dont know much about the 390's. I say if you have a 460 mod that beast. it will be worth the money!
im not a guru when it comes to this, but if you do take it out. you should atleast replace all of the gaskets. take a peek at the timing chain, and gears. make sure that they are the expensive (well not that cheap crap for gears. just so they are metal). just check everything out and clean her up! they look damn nice when they are all Niced up. hope that helps a bit.
dude your corolla sucks comapred to this beast of an engine. Yeah you might have 295,000 miles on it but i bet this 460 has two times that and runs like new. You are just jealous ^_^
OK, if my corolla sucks so bad, why the hell do you think GM is closing their factories throughout the US? The quality of Japanese cars is far superior to that of outdated American design.
Dude you are a Jealous kid who cant afford a REAL! Engine I see you all the time racing your cars thinking you are cool but you are just a bunch of punks who wouldnt know a real engine from dog crap. Oh and why Gm is closing is because their product sucks. GO GET A REAL CAR AND A LIFE PUNK!
A real engine is an engine that will awaken your soul when you put your foot in it. A real engine is an engine that you can feel it is ALIVE! A real engine is a 460 FORD!
Yeah 10 Mpg gets old after a while. But i enjoy the motor. A 460 is so reliable, and this IS NOT A LIE, a guy had one that he overheated so bad in death valley because he had a radiator that was to small when he went to shut the engine down it didnt stop running. He pulled the Coil wire and IT STILL WAS RUNNING. He thought the engine had left the building LOL. They went to rebuild it and found out that this huge monster wasnt even HURT!
yea. i will eventually. i am at the moment just changing minor things. Getting a Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold with the quadrajet ports. but have a holley 750 cfm double pumper. eventually im going to max it out.
I have a 79 4 wheel drive van with the 460 its sweet!

im looking in to buying a 460 to drop in to my thunderbird what kind of gas milage dose it get and is it better then a 351
importssuckazz 2 years ago
yes, it kicks 109 more cubic inches of ass and gets worst fuel economy, but for all those extra horses that should be the least of your worries ;)

if you do , do this swap try to get 429 heads , it makes a huge difference

uhhm for a 460 the gas mileage would be around 8-9 gallons a mile idk i am thinking on getting one

gas mileage doesnt exist with a big block, you measure in gallons to mile!

@importssuckazz it gets 8 mpgs at best...i had a 1985 f250 with the 460...horrible gas mileage but sooo much power!

How in the heck are you able to see that back of your engine from inside? I sure hope this is an Econoline and not a F-Series.

And you should keep the thermostat in place to reduce wear and increase performance.Good luck with the chrome and polish job.

Perhaps it does, but it shouldnt matter since its water cooled. Its the cooling system that disperses the heat, not the rocker covers as a fact.

actually, the cooling system cool the engine and every little bit of metal has an affect on the heat dispersion.

What i mean about the timing gears is if they are bad/worn out don't buy the cheap "plastic" type of gears.

The huge engines usually run pretty long since they spin low rpms. kind of like a lawnmower engine running at 3500rpm- it runs forever.
