it's cool that oregon has a million uniform combinations, but i've always like this one and this helmet the best. and i love the "o" with donald duck charging through it.
That was a great sesaon. If it wasn't for a couple missed field goals and not getting out of bounds at the end of the first half in the Rose Bowl, I bet it would have been a very very different outcome. Congrats to Penn State on being the true National Champions that year.
However, I do have to add that Oregon is a great team this year like they were in 1994. Even though USC is but a middle of the road Pac-10 team this year, to splatter them as Oregon did is alltimes impressive. Good luck in the Rose Bowl, the overwinner of the Rose Bowl (assuming Oregon chokes not in the Civil War) has a chance of being granted national co-championship through the AP poll, according to a rumor that I've heard.
Thank you for recognizing Penn State as the true national champions and not that fraudulent 1994 Nebraska squad. I agree that Penn State was the true national champ that year, and your Oregon Ducks team was an awesome team in 1994. I think you were #6 before the Rose Bowl and for good reason, too. It was a 38-20 game, true, but it was only 14-7 at halftime. I think this was the season that put Oregon on the map as a football school. Especially with that huge win over Washington.
Penn St had a great team with some top players, but you have to take into account that this was before they were in the Big 10 and they played a very Notre Dame like schedule, beating SEVERAL weak sister teams, then proclaiming themselves the best. The Ducks had never been in the big time before, & were definitely not ready for prime time. If they believed in themselves a little more and didn't make so many stupid mistakes, leaving points off the board, it would have been a very different game.
What are you talking about? Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993 and in 1994 they beat #12 Michigan on the road, a ranked Illinois (I forget the rank), #9 Ohio State 63-14, a ranked USC 38-14, and then #6 Oregon (who finished #11) to top it off. What more is wanted from you? Also, it's a misnomer that Penn State played only William and Mary type teams all the time as an independant. They regularly played Miami, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Alabama, Ohio State, Syracuse, Pitt, and other powerhouses.
Penn St. was awesome that year and should've had at least a part of the National Championship. They ran through the Big 10 schedule very easily. I think They were something like a 17pt favorite over the Ducks in the Rose Bowl.
That's true. Penn State's greatest challenge was against Illinois when they got down 21-0 quickly after some mishaps such as a pick six and a fumble around the Illinois 20, but once they composed themsleves they soon had outscored them 35-10 the rest of the way. The main reason they were ripped off is because they didn't run up the score against a good Indiana team. They led 28-7 before the backups went in and were punished for the fourth and fifth stringers allowing a few garbage time TDs.
My bad on Big 10, but #12 Mich was 8-4, #9 Ohio St 9-4. Not a stretch to say these "name" schools over rated. SC 8-3-1, "ranked" Illinois 7-5, remaining teams were 3-8, 5-5-1, 5-5-1, 2-9, 6-5, 3-7-1, and 5-6 Not impressive to me. Consensus was Oregon had no chance, and I felt at the time, while PSU was good, they got too much credit with so many bad teams on their schedule. They beat the big name schools, but they also went undefeated playing several BAD teams. That is what I am talking about.
Some of the teams that Penn State played were pretty bad, but most of them were pretty good. The top B10 teams PSU played weren't overrated, since they generally did well in their bowls, Illinois was 7-5 but their losses were all very close, they were better than their record. Indiana had Trent Green at QB, and although they were 6-5, they were no cupcake. And PSU generally destroyed their opponents by leaps and bounds. But I have to agree that then #6 Oregon was the best team they played.
Ahhh the 94 Rose Bowl team, the start of a rise to the top :)
