1. If by the next expansion you mean Medieval, a look at the history (and end) of the Roman empire might be in order.
2. Archers will do nothing to hoplites (this isn't just a RTW thing, hoplites were the dominant way to wage war for hundreds of years). Even your precious Macedon uses them.
3. The Roman Republic (later Empire) was simply the latest in a long line of nations ruling Europe. Genius certainly, but not the first.

the greeks in this game are terrible. they have no good cavalry at all, and the infantry are only good at standing around. if u need to use a greek faction, macedon or the seleucids are better. macedon is unplayable though. and the seleucids dont have a good starting position.
@Narania234 thats why you shoot them with arrows. greek infantry dont have the testudo formation of the romans to protect them from arrows(a big problem against parthians). and cavalry is useless against hoplites from the front, yes, but if charged from the back while occupying them from the front(with infantry), then there is the chance for infantry to panic and rout.and of all the factions in this game, rome was the only one that carved an empire that lasts into the next expansion.
@Narania234 cretan archers are mercenary units, anyone can recruit them as long as they are in the correct regions. besides the roman archer auxilia is a similar unit, and was historically recruited from assyria. nobody in antiquity was better than them in archery. secondly, you are combining units from different nations. greek cities have good hoplites, but horrible cavalry. macedon and the seleucids have average hoplites, but great cavalry.
Someone doesn't know how broken phalanxes are in this game vs the AI. Even on vh/vh arranging your phalanx in a zigzag formation almost guarantees enemies will charge into the pike hedge so you can enjoy watching hilarious pike rape of entire stacks of praetorians at the cost of a handful of your own men. They don't need cav except to chase down archers and their single cav unit does just that. Greeks are easy tier. Try Thracians for a change, I mean jesus christ,

@Jeffanos to be honest, ROME is the master because it adopted Greek culture and improved it. For example, the aqueducts, the Roman Coliseum, the Rome tortoise tactic. All of those were improvements made by the Romans, and not the greeks. Least they both had theaters.

The Phalanx was well suited against disorganised barbarians and charging persian cavalry but it was not made to break a shield wall or Testudo formation.

I can't install rome total war anymore because everytime I try to , the pc says that there is an earlier version of rtw is installed, nd that I should uninstall that first , but I have nothing on the pc that has anything to do with rtw !

It also was not really Thermopylae because the Wehrmacht at the time was the best outfitted, trained, and effective fighting force in the world, in a sense, they had Persia's military size, and Sparta's training.

In RTW we have some mistakes.First,the Macedonian banner is a mistake.They have putted the Greek letter Λ(lamda)that in ancient Greece,stood for Λακεδαιμόνιος(Lakedaimonios)meaning Spartan.Secondly,they havent understand the meaning of the word Hoplite.Οπλίτης(Hoplite) is from the Greek word Όπλον(Hoplon - Weapon)that meant the shield.They weren't carrying 6m tall spears but 2m long.The 6m long spear is called Sarissa and was used by Philiph II and later Alexander The Great.
I downloaded something off of total war center, unluckily I keep getting a data base error when I enter but when you get there, look in rtw/misc keep looking for macedon banner. dl and follow instructions.

@Narania234 thats why you shoot them with arrows. greek infantry dont have the testudo formation of the romans to protect them from arrows(a big problem against parthians). and cavalry is useless against hoplites from the front, yes, but if charged from the back while occupying them from the front(with infantry), then there is the chance for infantry to panic and rout.and of all the factions in this game, rome was the only one that carved an empire that lasts into the next expansion.

Each Spartan Hoplite has 2 hit points, instead of one. Spartans don't panic easly.
It's easy to keep a wall from many phalanx units plus Creten Archers behind the wall. Cavalry bodyguards(2 hit points each)guard the backk and rear
Macedonian Royal Pikemen, Greek Spartan Hoplites and Armoured Hoplites are invincible if player know how to use them.

@Narania234 cretan archers are mercenary units, anyone can recruit them as long as they are in the correct regions. besides the roman archer auxilia is a similar unit, and was historically recruited from assyria. nobody in antiquity was better than them in archery. secondly, you are combining units from different nations. greek cities have good hoplites, but horrible cavalry. macedon and the seleucids have average hoplites, but great cavalry.

Someone doesn't know how broken phalanxes are in this game vs the AI. Even on vh/vh arranging your phalanx in a zigzag formation almost guarantees enemies will charge into the pike hedge so you can enjoy watching hilarious pike rape of entire stacks of praetorians at the cost of a handful of your own men. They don't need cav except to chase down archers and their single cav unit does just that. Greeks are easy tier. Try Thracians for a change, I mean jesus christ,

Their tactics, flexible unit warfare for use in the wide valleys and rounded hills of Italy. The Phalanx was well suited against disorganised barbarians and charging persian cavalry but it was not made to break a shield wall or Testudo formation.
But the Romans beat Parthia, and the legendary Cataphracts so i do belive Macedon wouldve lost in the end though

It also was not really Thermopylae because the Wehrmacht at the time was the best outfitted, trained, and effective fighting force in the world, in a sense, they had Persia's military size, and Sparta's training.

The only reason other greek city states did not rebel was because they resented sparta, which pushed them around quite often. So, I doubt the greeks loved alexander. In RTW we have some mistakes.First,the Macedonian banner is a mistake.They have putted the Greek letter Λ(lamda)that in ancient Greece,stood for Λακεδαιμόνιος(Lakedaimonios)meaning Spartan.Secondly,they havent understand the meaning of the word Hoplite.Οπλίτης(Hoplite) is from the Greek word Όπλον(Hoplon - Weapon)that meant the shield.They weren't carrying 6m tall spears but 2m long.The 6m long spear is called Sarissa and was used by Philiph II and later Alexander The Great.

i agree greek culture pretty much ruled supreme around the meditaranian till the fall of the eastern roman empire and in philosophy religion and science the greeks lasted till modern day considering the fact the greeks invented math logic did the first disections and vivisections the beginning of western civ is old greece the beginning of eastern civ then again is mainly china and india as far as i kno but im not that wel informed about their history

Yes they greatly shaped our lives but to say Italy created the modern world during through out the 1700's and up until modern times Italy was a forgotten area with tiny city states and did not participate in colonization and so Italy's only claim to fame is the Romans who themselves borrowed from the Greeks I love the classical empires and its a shame to see people arguin over who is better

They beat us in war because we were weak, but they could't stand a chance against our culture, our arts, our architecture etc. But you are partly right, they collapsed our kingdoms, and after that their people with our culture and with Christianism as a new religion ended to Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine term was invented in the 18 hundreds by a french author who began to populirize it and his name was Montesquieu.
Therefore even though the eastern language was greek that doesn't mean, it was a greek empire.

The Byzantine empire(BIZANTIUM)was the eastern Roman Empire after its division in half for better management of the empire because it was too big.The name Byzantine is derived from the greek name Costantinople.
In the Eastern Roman empire ,greek was the official language of the people of that region,like english is today to the world.

Look man, as I said in my message to 224superdude, Byzantium was an empire with christinism as a religion and OUR CULTURE, romans beat us in war but they were beaten by a civilization much more powerful than theirs. Byzantium isn't greek 100%. Romans and Greeks together become the Byzantine Empire. That's why nowadays Italians look like Greeks. "Una faccia una razza" in latin :P

It's good that the Greeks got conquered by Rome. They had spent many centuries fighting with each other, which served no obvious purpose. Under Roman rule, they were given better things to spend their energies on.

Greeks had THE MOST leaders! More leaders than any other nation! Alexander the Great WAS Greek, if u read the personal message i sent to u explaining how. He loved his Greek heritage, considered himself to be Greek, spread Greek culture to the world, participated in Olympics (which only Greeks could participate in), named his horse a Greek name, had a Greek teacher, & said "pas min Elin varvaros" which means whoever is not Greek is a barbarian. people are arguing with you because they don't realise in the game the race is called the greek cities, not greece in a whole, the greek cities are ones that rebelled after Alexanders death but you play as most of them that didn't go to war wit eachother but Corinth is dead and controlled by rebels cos of the spartan-athenian war. that is why, they arnt the only greek factions in the game

i think YOU are the one who needs to learn your history francoruberto. Alexander the Great WAS without a doubt Greek. There was no such thing as a Slavic Macedonia until recently within the past 20 years! Macedonia is a region of Northern Greece and that's where his father Philip was from and that's where he ruled. Alexander is a GREEK name, so is his father's name Philip. His mother was from the Greek region of Greece IPIROS and her name was Olympia. Try telling me thats not Greek. Theres more
